If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I'm wondering if anyone else is having problems with the clear coat peeling on their 2011 Genesis Sedans. Mine is the 4.6 in white and the clear coat has started to peel below the passenger side fog light and on the lip of the flat panel where the trunk lid closes. I also noticed it came off of the rear bumper dress strip. The finish everywhere else still looks showroom new. I haven't found a relevant TSB on the problem but I keep looking. Any help is appreciated.

The only times I have seen oem clear coat peeling on newervehicles is from use of strong detergent cleaners and/or not washing road grime off and not waxing a car at all. I owned a 1996 chevy suburban for over 16 years. It was kept clean and was waxed twice a year and the paint still looked great. Many 1996 Chevy trucks have peeling clear coat and peeling paint color.

Did you purchase the car new? Is it the clear coat paint, or an after-market plastic protection film put on?

In order (as best I can remember)

No I was not the first owner. The car seems to have been a lease car purchased new in Florida. I bought it in Texas with just under 24K miles on it and a clean car fax report.

Since the paint warranty seems to be 3 years it appears that I won't have any coverage there.

Interesting point raised too because the peeling in the front below the fog light seems to be a much thicker material than that near the trunk. (which is very thin) Thus the peeling up front MAY be some sort of protective coating while that in the rear seems much more like normal clear coat.

If it was repainted then the reason why was not picked up by car fax. In sighting down the car I see no ripples or other signs of body work. (Although new panels could have been used) Still..... I had a 77 Mercedes 450SEL repainted because it's finish had gotten beyond what compound and paste wax could make shine anymore...... so sometimes that happens but this car is still too new for that to be a problem. All the paint elsewhere is in beautiful condition.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment! I suspect I'll end up taking it to a body shop and having it de-waxed and shot with clear coat again.

I would surmise your protective film is possibly the cause of your concern. The area around the trunk has a similar film, slightly thinner.

interesting...my dealer decided to PRESSURE WASH my car after oil change and it peeled the clearcoat right off the side skirts and font. I was pissed. They had to replace and paint the entire front bumper and the skirts. HAPPY MAN now. Looks fabulous...
I would call Hyundai..

Carfax is not 100% accurate, If insurance pays for the repairs most likely it will be on Carfax.. If you wreck your car and pay for the repairs out of pocket it will not be on any report. My Dodge Ram has been damaged twice and I payed for the repairs, but it will have a clean Crafax.

I have a2010 base in titanium metallic.... The door handles appear to be oxidizing. The paint looks terrible and is actually showing signs of cracking. The rest of the car looks new. Very disappointed in Hyundai. You may recall their prating about the paint process. Last Hyundai for me

Weird, my dads Lexus door handle is doing the same thing. Jimmy, I wouldn't loose sleep over this, it's a door handle, not a transmission:rolleyes:

Onefungenesis..... Hyundai will not replace the handles, I tried and even wrote directly to Hyundai America. They look absolutely terrible. I am now driving a billboard for reason NOT to buy a Hyundai. After all, if your flagship looks this bad then what will happen to lesser models?
Scottdk, this is my second Hyundai to have oxidized paint problems. Feeling like a fool for having trusted their new paint process. Once again I'm driving a blemished vehicle from a manufacturer that doesn't care about the details or customer retention

Thanks for the info Jimmy. It's nuts that the dealer won't replace. This is my 4th Hyundai/Kia product including cars that my wife owned too. We had a problem with the driver side rear door handle not functioning, but the dealer replaced this just out of the bumper to bumper warranty and we never had another problem with that handle again.

I know this message was old BUT we just noticed a few days ago on our 2012 Pearl White 23.8 sedan that the clear coat is peeling on the plastic nose around the lights and grille.

Now we bought the car new in Aug 2011 so the factory warranty is gone on the paint - HOWEVER, we DID get that Simonize Warranty and that's apparently still in force...anybody have any experience with it? We are going to take it to the dealer this week...

My passenger handle was replaced under a TSB a year or more back. Should be done for free.

I'm having the same issue with my 2012 Gen Sedan, pearl white. The paint on the bumpers is defected and the body shop mgr said as such... Happening on both the front and rear bumpers. It looks bad -- yellowish bubbles, some peeling, etc. Is this a common problem?

The warranty manager (not in the same building / phone system as the body shop) said they'd cover it and did but when I went to pick it up they had only done the back bumper.. sigh, not my understanding but a comms fallout between the body shop that supports several dealers and the Hyundai service mgr that approves the service work. Anyway, I left it and asked them to talk amongst themselves to figure out how to fix the entire problem. Will post back.

I'm a busy guy... this started a long time ago but who has time to take a car to the shop... my advice to anyone is if you see something take it in right away and keep records. That way if it gets worse, you have something date stamped to fall back on.

Clear coat peeling, YES!!!! My 2011 Genesis, White, clear coat turns yellowish, then it blisters up and peels leaving a dull white color plastic, which I think is the base coat for the paint, which is a three coat process to paint. Most of my peeling is on plastic parts, however, I am noticing that the paint around the door openings is beginning to flake and peel off.... MANY OTHER MEMBERS OF THIS FORUM ARE GIVING HYUNDAI A PASS ON THEIR POOR QUALITY PAINT....BUT, I AM NOT ONE OF THEM. The paint should reasonably last longer than 3 years..... A service manager at my dealer, mentioned that he has seen this on several other white Genesis vehicles.... the factory has not covered any of them after their 3 year warrantee has expired....

Old thread to be sure, but for accuracy and continuity sake I'll post here too.

I have a 2010 3.8 Premium with Navigation in pearl white. The plastic inserts on the front and rear bumpers are peeling. I bought the car with 53k miles on it about 6 months ago. Didn't notice it until I stripped the car in preparation to Zaino it for the 1st time. I don't notice any yellowing just missing clear coat. Almost like it was rubbed off. I asked the dealer about it when I went in for my first oil change and got the standard 3 year paint warranty BS. My father in law owns a body shop so I intended to have them sand and repaint the effected plastic bits. It will cost me roughly $250 or so. But, after seeing all of the posts on this forum with similar issues on the pearl paint I think I'm going to press the dealer on this issue. No way should a vehicle produced in 2009 have this type of issue with paint. I find it ludicrous that Hyundai hasn't stepped up and fixed all of these issues. Never had a vehicle to this type of thing. Ever.
