  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello All,
I recently received a postcard offering a complimentary update to my navigation unit (2011 4.6 w/ tech package). It state that there is no charge, with one million miles of new roads, 450K added restaurants/hotels/etc, and 7.5 million other data points. It sounds too good to pass up but my current info and nav unit work fine and I'm a little apprehensive about introducing new errors or instability in the system. It came from Hyundai Assurance in Milwaukee. From the combined wisdom and experience on this forum, I am aware of the possible problems with battery drain and such with the installation unless the dealer hooks up a battery charger instead of keeping the car running (the card states it takes about 3 hours). Has anyone else received this offer? If so and you had this done, would you have done it in retrospect?
Thanks, Kent

Almost sounds too good to be true. After seeing all the negative posts here I certainly wasn't going to get it done. I might still regret this decision later. We’ll see.

Thanks. I will schedule the update. Guess I'm the tester in this one :-)

Though it wasn't resulting from the postcard they have apparently sent out to some, they did reimburse me for a map update not too long ago. This was via Twitter, amazingly. I tweeted to Hyundai about how poor the nag software is and they replied the same day, offering me a free upgrade.

sounds like decent service on the part of Hyundai. Have you noticed any improvement or problems since the upgrade? Thanks. Kent

as posted in another thread, a couple of us have gotten these. my maps were updated overnight; pick up later today...

Is the free upgrade a response from Hyundai after negative feed back? I had several service writers try to talk me out of the upgrade( "too expensive, too failure prone, too time consuming"...all true). What's next a free fuel air filter?

BTW, is there a chance this upgrade be an upgrade of the dreaded day long upgrades?

This car architecture kind of demand, quick, almost instantaneous, firmware updates.

again, this is service campaign TQ3 (as opposed to TSB) #13-01-036

according to the TQ, applicable vehicles are:

  • GENESIS (BH) equipped with DIS(Jog Dial): Produced from Jun. 1, 2010 to Jan. 30, 2011
  • EQUUS (VI) : Produced from August 1, 2010 to Dec. 3, 2010
comments on upgrade failure, expensive, etc. are bogus IMO. this is a service campaign (funded by the mother ship) so dealers are likely reimbursed for both work and media.

from what i can tell reading stuff, this is Windows CE based (and therefore doomed to be slow).

my update completed without incident - it took around 4h (since they backed up and restored my faves etc). car was on a charger during the process. no operational difference detected, but i haven't really tried to play with it much yet.

As posted on a thread in the TSB section, I have already had my car in for the upgrade but it didn't update the maps or firmware. I was told I already had the latest version. However, I saw that my map contained "2010 04 30" in the version number. Don't have to be a rocket scientist to see I only have the original April 2010 version.

I took the car back last night along with the postcard. They will keep the car today and try the upgrade again. I will keep you all posted.

Hope all went well. Next I've got to check my production date to see if mine fits during the time frame you mentioned....... (keeping fingers crossed) :D

I received the card for the free upgrade. In June, my car went in the shop due to airbag malfunction. It stayed in the shop for 5 weeks waiting on a part. I kept pumping them for a free upgrade to Nav since it was taking so long to get my car back. Eventually, they agreed to do it but whined that they were eating the cost of media.
I did NOT get the latest sw version but I still like the upgrades they put in. I'm definitely getting this upgrade also but will make sure to stress that they put my car on a charger instead of running the engine.

How do I know what version of Nav S/W I am running?

Hyundai Assurance kept passing me around. When I called Hyundai Customer Service, they denied knowledge of any offered GPS updates.

Sounds like it is limited to specific purchase dates and possibly specific trim levels (Tech Package?). Free upgrades may also be given out in specific cases where a customer has suffered a big inconvenience (car been in the shop a long time, etc).

Only thing is I did not give them any VIN info or anything. Each person I talked to claimed they didn't know what I was talking about.

If you are implying that comments on upgrade failures are not true, you are quite mistaken. Many people on this forum, me included, have put up with Nav system failures from Hyundai's prior upgrade software. In my case, after multiple attempts, they were forced to replace the entire Nav system, i.e. the "head." $4,000 repair which I did not pay.

Or did I misunderstand your comment above?
