If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi Guys,

I'm considering purchasing a used Genesis. I wouldn't call myself cheap....I just like a great value :)

At our local Hyundai dealership they've got two used Genesis' for sale -- a loaded 2009 3.8, and a base 2013 3.8, for about $6000 difference (17k vs 23k). They are both Certified. The 2009 has 58000 miles and the 2013 has 17000. The 2009 is a two car owner and the the 2013 was a Rental (for only 7 months...hmm??).

Questions:

1) Would anyone even consider purchasing the 2009 with 58000 miles? Any things to watch out for? Any issues that plagued that year or anything that could bite me on a 4 year old Genesis with nearly 60k miles off hand?

2) Which one would you choose? Would you you save the 6k and get a fully loaded Genesis that is from 2009 with 58k miles or spend the extra 6k on a base 2013?

Thanks!

Depends on your preference.

I would get the base ride and pimp it out.

Less electronics to break in the dran thing. In addition, you have a longer warranty.

Is the 2013 a trade or is it a rental?

1) No. Ride is too firm in 2009 model year.

2) Neither , I would look for a loaded 2012 v8. more power better riding

Why would anybody buy a used car with only 2,000 miles left on the warranty? My advice? Keep looking.

If it is a certified car the warranty would be for 100,000 miles, so he got another 42000 miles.

Matt: I have similar 2009 model. It's been serving me great, especially in the Iowa winters with proper tires. The 2009 suspension is on the firm side but it suits my tastes. However other folks have complained here. 2012 definitely has better suspension.

The bumper to bumper (new vehicle limited) warranty for CPOs expires at 5/60,000. It is correct that the 10/100,000 powertrain warranty conveys to the CPO buyer. Again, I wouldn't by any car with just 2 thou remaining on the warranty.

Bumper to Bumper warranty of 5/60,000 is not totally correct (on a 2012). After I bought the extended warranty on mine the salesman commented that the $3,000 to replace GPS/Stereo head unit is only 3/36,000 coverage in the basic warranty.

^True, that's why I also used Hyundai's official term "new vehicle limited warranty." Most of us realize that.

To get the best value in a used car you should find a car nut who has taken care of his or her vehicle. A "certified" vehicle is just one that has a warranty taken out by the dealer against any claims made for various types of failure. It does not guarantee that the previous owner took care of it or did not hot rod the car.

I have seen several very good alternatives on this very forum.

Thanks for the response -- good thoughts on less to break -- I had thought about that as well. With all the extra bells and whistles it seems there's more of a chance that something would break, and then how much money would I be saving in the end.

The 2013 was a rental. Looking at the Carfax it had only been owned/used as a rental for 7 months. Seems short to me...wonder why they pulled it out of production? Maybe that length of time is normal?

Good to know about the firm ride on the 2009 model year. I guess I had thought they didn't change much on the suspension over the different model years. Do you know what was changed? Did they just soften the ride or did they also improve handling?

Good to hear that it's done you well in the Iowa winters. I'm in Iowa too, so something that'll handle snow is important. Where in Iowa are you? I'm in Waukee.

I am a stone's throw-away from you..... in Urbandale (Waukee school district). I did just fine in the snow that we got last weekend. I have Michelin X-Ice tires and for saftey, have 200 lbs of sand tubes in the trunk.

Go for the 2013, don't penny pinch,,
Forget fuel economy! - Enjoy the ride..........
Spend time learning and trying the Radio system BEFORE you sign.........
I'm on my 8th Hyundai - Accents/Elantras/Sonatas/Azeras/Genesis...
Just had the drivers seat/motor unit & the complete Nav/Radio/CD replaced..
2 days in the shop, loaner & they detailed my "G" plus tanked it Up...:D

The 2009s have a poor suspension design. Also, even though they are both 3.8 V-6 engines, the 2013 has 333hp because it is direct injected. The 2009 has 290hp. Gas mileage goes up a bit for the 2013 as well...

Definitely get the 2013! I purchased one that was $1500 less but it wasn't a CPO. Plus there are considerably more features in the 2013. The only negative with mine is that there aren't any back up sensors. My other car has it (with the camera) and it is such a help.

There could be a number of reasons the car wasn't in the rental fleet for a longer period of time although it doesn't seem that mileage was the culprit.

It could have been an unpopular rental or the rental company decided it was time to upgrade their fleet with later year models. It could have wound up in snow country and nobody wanted a high horsepower rear drive rental in winter. There might have been something wrong with the car and it spent too much time in the garage.

Wife was in rental biz. Has a lot to do with forecasted depreciation.

Why not pay an independent car tech to check out the 2013..
Gotta be worth the peace of mind...Remember anything can go wrong at any time so don't take anyones word as gospel..
You sign, you pay you either laugh or cry!..The Genesis is a great vehicle B U T the costs of replacement for the high end electronics/running gear can be awfully painful.. High end cars need thicK wallets.............
