  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey ive got a 4.6 blk on blk (black opal)

I'm considering throwing some grafix, flake, or two-tone over the black opal base. Im suffering from brain fog, so Id like to hear what you all think any pics would be awesome too!

Once you've accepted the fact that selling a car like this is very hard, check out these pics, from SEMA:

Screw the paint, I want that supercharger!

What you might try is doing a top coat over the black with another clear mixed with a pearl. I did this with a 34 Ford streetrod I built several years ago. When you looked at the car straight on the pearl disappeared. When you looked at it from different angles the pearl popped off all the edges reflecting the light. It was a subtle but striking touch. I don't think the Genesis is a good candidate for radical graphics or a wild two or three tone paint scheme. The car would be impossible to sell without an expensive repaint.

this is my biggest consideration. a clear with some medium iridescent flake that is 2.5x the size of the flake in the black opal paint....

Wow I just seen this genesis an I thought my paint was the one an only lol

Brady,
Go see Jeff Miller, aka the Bat Man at Miller Customs up in Temucla. ;)

As for paint, one of the things I did when painting my bike, was this. I layed down a base coat of black, then a mid coat of clear. I then came back with a high gloss top coat clear with House of Kolors Kopper Penney Pearl's miked in it. It is a dry pearl that you can mix into the clear. I started with a mist coat of the clear/peral color and slowly added more coats higher up on the bike. The end result was a nice fade from the copper to the black. I then shot a full coat of high gloss clear to seal it all in. It looks awsome under the sun.

One thing that really came out nice on the bik is the front fender. It's basically black, but has a misting of the Kopper Penny over it. Under normal conditions, it looks black or a bit like a dark rootbeer. But when the sun hits it, you see the peral really pop.

The basic bike.

Front fender when the sun hits it.

So maybe these will give you some ideas. House of Kolor has a ton of different dry pearls. I've also seen a car years ago that looked black. But when the sun hit it just right, it looked like a black cherry, but only on the main part as the outer edges were still black. Not sure how he did it and this was way before the camallion paints they have now.

If you want to go two tone, I'd say black on the bottom and a black cherry or copper on top. Look at a '05 Harley Davidson black cherry pearl. I had one in a two tone, black pearl/plack cherry pearl and it was a beautiful color combo I thought.

As others have stated, it is very hard to sell a car that has been customizied to the degree you are contemplating. If you are ok with that, feel free to proceed.

A few of things to keep in mind also is that when conceptualizing your two tone:

1) It is easier (and less expensive) to paint the top half of the vehicle, rather than the bottom half. If you do a bottom half, you will need to paint into the jambs, which adds cost.

2) Typically, darker colors on the top are more visually appealing, and are complimented by window tint.

3) Specify whether you want the paint line "buried" under clear, or if you are doing some sort of separater, ie: pinstripe.

4) If you want to do multiple panels and accent a body line, to bury the paint line you will need to re-clear that whole panel, adding additional cost.

5) DO NOT "cheap out" on the price!! This is something that you are going to have to live with every single day, and a cheap price does not outweigh a poor or average quality job. By the same token, make sure you and your shop are both very explicit on what is expected.

On the vehicle posted above, the front bumper cover, hood, roof and decklid were painted. A very cost effective way to go; as it is only four panels that needed to be painted, and to bury the line, only the bumper cover, hood and trunklid needed to be re-cleared. If they carried that color down onto the vehicle's body line, that would necessitate essentially a complete re-paint, as every panel on the vehicle would need to be re-cleared; excluding the rear bumper cover.

My last paint project here; just to give you an idea of what is involved:

I remember reading about that magnum on the forums...it was very nice at the time.

I am contemplating doing a candy roof with patterns and flake. Maybe a little leafing and pinstriping to tie it in. I come from a lowrider background. My homie here in Escondido has a bodyshop, Street Creations. He does many quality show cars and his prices are what many would call, cheap. His name is Eddie.

I would 'skin' the car in what I thought I wanted first, to get what it would look like with the paint, but not spending the money on the paint first if it would not look right or if I didn't like it. That way, you have a 'dry run' of the look without the painted car to deal with. And you can skin it to something else later.

Have you thought of vinyl wrapping your car?
