In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. 2010 genesis sedan 4.6...having problem with DIS control knob. Works fine, left or right. Pressing the knob in is a problem. Press in at least 10-20 times to get it to do anything.
Question: do I have to replace the whole unit or just the knob itself?

I doubt if it is just the knob, but I would go to the Hyundai dealer parts department and ask them. You might need to try more than one dealer to get a second opinion, since some dealers want to sell you more parts than you need.

Get some deoxit spray from a radioshack or if you have a frys electronics they have other quality electronics spray cleaners.
The stuff works wonders on anything electronic with moving parts or connections. I have fixed many older AV reciever that had knobs "not working" simply with deoxit spray.

I would get some of that, spray all around the knob and push down, turns, spin for a while.
See if it works after that

Any resolution on this? Mine is doing the same thing. Have to hit 10-20 times for it to work. Seems like it would be a dirty connection but I don't know anything. Anyone try the spray mentioned?

I'm having the exact same issue. Anyone figure this out?

I see there are some of us with that same problem. Even if I buy a refurbished one from Korea (on ebay $269), I don't have a clue on how to approach the removal of the defective one and then installation of the new one.

Is there any description on how to remove the central console top?

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem on my '12 R-Spec. I found a used one from a wrecked car. I didn't find a full description online, but was able to piece it together. The whole console top comes out by prying between it and the console. I used a putty knife and a screwdriver covered with a piece of cloth. It came up fairly easily. For me to get the console top up enough to make it easy to disconnect/reconnect the wiring, I had to remove the shifter knob and the plastic piece in the lower dash that has the DVD changer. The shifter knob just pulls off, but have to pull pretty hard. The dash piece is pried out like the console top, but was much harder to get to pop out.

Todd, Thank you for the detailed description. I realized I might have to pry underneath...

There's a Korean company on eBay, selling refurbished DIS for $270, with a 6 months warranty. Has anyone had experience with them?

I was also considering buying the one on eBay. I was concerned when it said in the description something about not being responsible for software incompatibility. I'm going to try two things:

1) rebooting system via battery disconnect
2) spraying contact cleaner under the nob

I'll keep you posted.

I tried spraying contact cleaner, but didn't help. You can't really get under the knob. When I had the issue, the ones on eBay were over $400. So I went the used route, knowing that what I was replacing it with very well could have the same problem. So far so good.

OK. I searched online with the CCP (Central Control Panel) part number, avoiding eBay, where there are 3 units only, @ $250-$300. When a new one can be purchased a bit more than $500, why pay &300 for a questionable used one...

I found several, offering the part ~$100. One of them offered up to 1 year warranty, for additional $15, which I obviously grabbed!!!

I failed in removing the shit knob. That son of a gun refused to move out, no matter where I sat or how hard I tried pulling. I had my cruise control done at the dealership under extended warranty (unfortunately the DIS wasn't covered), so I asked them to pull it out, which they did, at no charge!!! Removing the DVD cover first and then the top of the console, was relatively easy, with a pro "prying" tool kit I got at AutoZone for $10. When removing the DVD cover, just stick/push the toll on the left side, and the cover with pop out, and the rest of it can be removed by hand. I then tried pulling the console's top by hand, from under the DVD side, and it popped out on one side, then with the prying tools, pooped the rest. At this point you should disconnect the harness from the driver-seat heating/cooling button. Also, press the Start button twice (NOT TURNING THE CAR ON!!!!!), press the brake and then move the shifter to the N or D position. The the only way to pull the cover above the shifter stick. When it's out, press the brake again, move the shifter back to P and turn the car off. DO NOT MASS WITH CABLES WHEN THE CAR IS ON!!!!!. Disconnect the harness from the CCP (press a samll lever on one side of the connector). Now turn the whole cover upside down. The are 3 seen philips screws to unsrew. The 4th is hidden by a light connector, so you should remove that connector's clip, exposing the screw. Once all 4 screws are out, replace with the working CCP and reverse the whole process.

At the dealership part+tax=$1K + 3 hours. I paid $150, including shipping and now, IT WORKS GREAT!!!

Nice job! I took my dial off and moved the joystick around a bit trying to see why it wasn't working. Nothing obvious. For some strange reason after I put the dial back on it started working. Go figure. I'm sure I'll need to replace it so thanks for the instructions.

Can you tell us where you bought it?

Ed

Mine has always had this problem at random times. I find if I push down on the far right side of the knob if usually works. My car is already 5 years old and I have only had it 6 months, I took it in when I first got it and they said it was "fixed". Its frustrating but I can usually get it to work by spinning it around a bit and pushing on different angles if it doesn't respond. It can be pulled off pretty easily (or at least mine does) so that may give you more access to it if you try to spray the contact cleaner.

JonCarl, my 2 cents contribution is to get a cheap torx screwdriver and then, to take the whole unit off. Once you have the part, there are 8 or 9 torx screws in the back. Once open, disconnect the flat cable and remove the PCB. Pull out the knob (same as your stove knobs...). Underneath the knob you'll see a big nut. Take it off.
Now you'll have the only moving mechanism, where you can use the contact spray. it might work!

Howdy from Ft Worth Car Guy Jeff. My 2012 5.0, with 37k miles, sleeps in my garage, has had the malfuntctioning knob for about a year. Seems to be less inclined to work hen hot. However, it may take a nap a any time as do the drivers side power-window switches. NO! I have not spilled anything, nor have the switches been rained on for more than a couple Texas drops. I think disassembly of the console is my next move.? Unless its covered by my MaxCare.

Thank you for the advice. I may have to try this soon since it will probably get worse with time. What does PCB stand for ?

PCB = printed circuit board. It's that green board with all the electronics on it... Almost everything in our lives has a PCB... :)

I'll have to revive that post again, because mine stopped working now too.
It quit working sporadically for a couple of minutes in the past, but now it's not working at all.
Are there any updates on parts or DIY solutions?
Anyone tried to just replace that one electrical component that is operated by the knob?
Or even opened it to resolder the connections?
