Crushed oil filter

This is the 2nd time I have removed the oil filter from my 2010 4.6 and it was crushed. One side of the filter is caved in and torn. Any idea what could cause this? I was very careful when replacing the filter cartridge. Anyone else seen or heard of this?

Any chance it's the wrong one for your car?
I've seen that happen before but it was a result of someone installing a filter that was tool tall.

Pretty sure it is the right one. L25848 Puralator.
Last time I changed it I was very very careful to make sure it was all going together properly since this happened before.
It is weird because as you can see the filter is almost sheared in the center and only in the one quadrant. This is exactly what it looked like the last time.

Other than the fact that it may not meet OEM specs, not sure what can cause this. Interesting. Try an OEM filter and see what happens.

Suggest you go to Hyundai filters for the car

That is why I use OEM filters on my Genesis and Mercedes. I had it happen on my Mercedes once with a aftermarket Fram filter and since then I use OEM filters only.

The filter in the pic from the link above is identical to the Hyundai OEM filter, but not the same as the one you are using. The fact that Hyundai switched filters for the 2012 V8 may be part of the confusion, but I am not sure.

Also, there is some question about how far to tighten the filter housing after replacing the cartridge. Some seem to screw it all the way down until it does not screw anymore, but I believe that it should only be screwed down until it meets firm resistance, and then about 1/2 turn after that. My guess is that you screwed it all the way down.

Filter housing is 18 ft lbs of torque.

I torque it to25 N/m per the inscription on the housing end.

It's entirely possible that the aftermarket filter just doesn't have the same crush resistance that the oem does.

That might not have been the puralator filter I put in last time but I put the one I listed in now. I thought I bought the same one last time but I really don't remember. I do remember that there was only one brand available the last 2 times I bought a filter. I will update with how this one works once I change it.

Why not use the oem filter. Its a $30k to $40k luxury car, why risk ruining an engine to save 3 to 6 dollars each oil change.

The 2 crushed filters were the only ones they had at the auto parts store so I didn't choose by by price but by what was available.
If I have a choice I will buy the highest quality filter. I don't factor price into oil/filter purchases. I don't change my oil to save money. I have the space/equipment to easily do it and I also like to sure it is done right. If I had taken it to the dealer and a tech there just pulled the old filter and didn't inspect it I would never have been asking this question. My time is very valuable to me and I can do it in less time than it takes to drive to the dealer a sit watching TV while someone who may or may not give a crap about my car changes the oil.
