  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Well, after 35K miles, my Genny is starting to sound like a rattle box. OK, that's an exaggeration, but compared to the quiet interior, I'm starting to get a very annoying rattle on many road surfaces at highway speeds. It's sounds like it's coming from under the dash, near where the dash and window meet but I can't quite locate it. I've tried having a passenger put pressure at various points to see if we can stop it, but it doesn't appear to be external to the dash, but perhaps just under it.

Anyone else getting anything like this? I asked the dealer about it, and of course he said he'd look at it, but it's not part of the warranty since "rattles/squeaks are only covered for 12K miles". Perhaps this is normal business for many cars, but it feels lame.

Any ideas how to track it down? Is it difficult to get inside the dash?

Some of these "what's wrong" threads are getting ridiculous. At the end of the month I will post the most ridiculous ones so we can vote on who's the brightest of the bunch.

This thread is going in right behind "how often should I wash my car in the winter?" Is there a full moon :confused:out this week?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Dash rattles are sometimes hard to find. I once completely dismantled the dash on a new car to find a rattle, which I fixed with a zip-tie.
My suggestion is to first try to determine which side of the car it comes from. Sometimes a mechanics' stethescope helps. Once you have decided which side of the car it comes from remove the easily-removable panels under the dash/footwell. Perhaps you will hear the rattle better. On the passenger side try removing the glove box. It will give you nice access to behind the dash.
But, if you are really going to get into this I think you will need a paper version of the factory shop manual so you can see just how the dash panel is put together.

I don't think there is anything ridiculous about this thread. Rattles can be very annoying and this guy is asking for help tracking it down. Someone might have a suggestion. Very legitimate post.

With the doors open you'll see fuse box covers ("crash pad side covers" in Hyundai's books). Open the fuse box doors, then the whole panel with the box door snaps off (at least that's how it looks in the manuals). Once off, you'll see a few screws along the bottom/edge that hold the knee panel. ("lower panel" in Hyundai parlance) There are more screws along the bottom of that panel too. Then you'll see 3 screws that hold the "cluster facia panel" (the part surrounding the instruments) and it snaps off. There are similar screws on the long trim panel forming the face of the dash ("center facia panel).

Good luck. I'd start with removing the glove box first. There are small plastic "ears" in the sides of this; they slide back/rotate to disengage the box from the dash assembly. They'll be darn tight the first time they're released too. There is also a "damper" linkage on the side of the glove box closest to the stereo, disconnect it. Once the glove box hangs free you'll see the cabin air filter assembly and some dash guts.

You seem to think every thread is stupid. Why do you even come here? This forum is for discussing things about our cars, and this rattle is driving me nuts. There's thousands of Genesis owners out there and it's likely some have experienced a similar rattle or problem and perhaps got it fixed, so I thought I'd ask. Actually, looks like a few people have and gave me some pointers, thanks guys!

If you really think this post/thread is useless, I'd suggest going back and looking at your own posts over the last few weeks/months, they're a study in uselessness.

I'm with you there ttsig. +1

Another thought on dash rattles: sometimes their source is under the hood, like a loose windshield washer, etc.

A rattle? Can't have a rattle. Time to trade it.

Mine is still rock solid, with no rattles (I'm knocking on wood at this moment) but I only have 20,000 miles on it. :D

mine rattles like a mother ****er, drives me crazy. 2009 4.6 Tech. The rattles are the only thing I hate about my car (besides the worst iPod interface anyone can imagine).

Problem solved....use a flash drive:D

As a Lexus owner I can tell you dash rattles are not exclusive to the Genesis.

Lexus GS 350 and ES 350 from '07 through '09 have been plagued with dash rattles. This really shows up in real cold weather. From what I can see on the internet, Lexus has fixed the problems, or so I hope since I just acquired a brand new 2010 ES 350 this past Saturday as a replacement to a 07 GS 350 with an occasional rattle.
