  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Dealer charging $3.2k for fuel injector replacement

Also, they still can't find the key. And some of the brackets and pieces were broken when me and the other mechanic were looking at it

Some cars getting to the injectors and getting the fuel rails removed is a PITA. The dealer will have a book time for injector replacement. Asks how many hours that job is and then compare the hours to an independent shop. Dealer probably has no way to really know if it’s all injectors or not and they wanted to replace them all for good measure. With no code not sure how the dealer tests all this? I had to replace some injector wiring on my G37 once and getting down to the wiring required me to remove a whole bunch of stuff for the injectors and their wiring were buried deep. Labor seems high but if it’s. 12-14 hour job that’s probably close to $1500 by itself. All new injectors if those are about $1000, this job gets expensive quickly if the real root cause is the injectors.

Not all the time. I paid $50 for a brand new one (OEM) a few years back off of Ebay. Programmed it with my knock-off GDS tool.
How the heck did you get a knock off GDS tool to work on your 2015(or newer) Genesis? My knockoff GDS tool does not connect to my Genesis. My GDS tool keep stating that I need to update my 2.2 firmware before it can connect? I tried two different OBD cables; so unless both cables were bad it seems like I have to update my GDS unit.

It's been a couple years since I updated the firmware but it worked right away with the firmware it came installed with (most likely 2.2). I see in my Genesis firmware folder, I have 2.24, 2.28 and 2.30. I'm pretty sure it is running 2.28 now. I remember it can be real tricky doing firmware installs, at one time I thought I had bricked the unit.

Found the updates here along with some helpful hints: https://cartechnology.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?fid=60

Up until sometime last year, whenever you did a scan using the GDS, it would automatically connect and upload your data download session to Hyundai's website. There, you could also download and review all the dealer sessions you wanted to compare. Kinda cool... you could go and look at thousands of dealer scans using dealer codes on window stickers. Now that function no longer works. I had dozens of uploads stored and maybe they found out non dealers were using it with bootlegged equipment.

Sadly, some of the more in depth items in the GDS aren't accessible without a technicians code. The GDS software shows some Oscilloscope functions but it either needs more hardware or a tech. code. This thing definitely has a learning curve, as I get lost it seems like every time I use it. Doesn't help that I use it once or twice a year.

Never had a problem connecting using the supplied DLC cable.

I just fired up my laptop and 2.24 is installed.

Thank you.

I have two GDS VCI units. One that now have firmware 2.21 after trying to update it with newer firmware and my replacement unit that has 2.24. My Genesis DH update software has the 2.21 firmware which is what I used to down grade the one I tried to update. Maybe the cheaper GDS VCI are shipping with bad data cables now; or I am just unlucky enough to get two bad units or cables.

I ordered a data cable from a different company that make GDS VCI cables. Hopefully that will allow me to connect. The cable I purchased seem to be built a tad better than the cheap looking cables supplied with my GDS unit since it has screws on the connector case.

Just checking... you do know the ignition has to be on for it to work.

What??? My other scan tools work on the Genesis with the engine off in accessory mode. Are you saying the engine has to be actually running for the GDS to work?

I just checked with the engine running. Still not connecting. The message states it can not communicate with this system. I have read online on a cheap GDS seller website that the cheaper GDS 2.24 versions that are widely sold only works for the BH Genesis models and not the DH models. I am starting to believe that these Chinese sold GDS units does not work for my DH Genesis. I will try it again with the new OBD cable and see it works, but I am prepared to just buy an Launch scan tool.

Can you post some pics of the GDS working in your Genesis? Like accessing modules?

I think it has to be in the ON position, but with the engine off. Without your foot on the brake, if you hit the button once that puts you in ACCESSORY mode. Press a second time without your foot on the brake, it puts you into ON mode.

Thanks you, but the GDS unit I have does not work it seems. I have tried it with the engine running and with the engine in the "on" position.

I would like to see some pictures of a "cheap" GDS VCI unit working on a 2015 or newer Genesis. It does not seem like the unofficial units work with the DH models. Even some of the Chinese websites that sell these GDS units list only the BH models, but not the DH models. I wished my seller would have listed that information.

They didn't because it costs them a sale. I don't trust anyone on Ebay.

What version of Windows do you have it installed on? I seem to remember it wouldn't work on 10.

Ignition on, motor not running.

Mine works on a DH.

Could you post some pictures of the GDS working on a DH? I am using Windows 10, but the software works and updates my GDS VCI and download the updates from the web. The only issue is that it will not connect to my Genesis.

So could you post some pictures of the GDS system working on your DH Genesis so that I know for a fact that it does work on a DH model. Or I may be just wasting my time trying to get the GDS to work on a DH model.

Serious thread hijack in progress.

True. My bad. However, a working GDS may be useful for any engine repair like the fuel system; so still kind of relevance to this fuel system related thread like with a fuel module which may need to be calibrated with a GDS unit without going to a dealership.

However, it seems that the cheap Chinese sold GDS do not work on our DH models.

Got the car fixed, working better than before. Engine firing up a lot faster and feels stronger too.

It was just one of the fuel injectors that were bad (#6). I had to get a new battery and a bunch of hardware too, which I'll try to get the dealership to pay for because these weren't problems when I first went to pick up the car. Overall, I only paid just under $1200, not including the $800 on spark plugs (and I guess the $1200 on the starter that was covered under warranty). Also that tow that cost an extra $50 because they lost the key.

There were also a bunch of gaskets that needed replacing that might be covered under warranty. The mechanic that fixed everything said this all should've been warranty work but Hyundai is specific about injectors not being covered (lol).

The dealer found the key and when I picked it up, I got the director's card to try and get some of these dealership fault costs paid back.

The new mechanic noted that the oil pan was completely filled with gas, pretty crazy

Yeah, probably straight leaking from the bad fuel injector

I good mechanic knows to look for that, and promptly changes the oil. Running rich or a stuck injector has ruined an awful lot of engines (usually bearings go first), regardless of size or make.
