  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Dealer Forgot to Torque the Oil Drain Plug....

Does anybody know what the compression readings should be? They sent me pics of the gauge reading for each cylinder. They ranged a bit between about 190 and 200 psi.

If it was ran long enough after losing oil pressure to cause a problem with the compression you would have more than likely spun some bearings.

So, the lesson is, if the dealer leaves the plug out, drive it until you destroy the engine. Then, there is no question that the dealer has to replace the engine.

Kinda sad that this is looking like this might be the right conclusion.

Maybe, but it is possible that any metal shavings were trapped in the oil filter, and won't show up in the oil analysis.

If there are shavings in the filter, there will be abnormal metal particle count in the oil sample.

Latest Update:

I got a call from the Service Manager at the dealership late yesterday and had a very good conversation with him regarding possible solutions, etc. I really felt like things were getting on the right track toward a real resolution to this and that they understood my concerns and were truly making a real effort to address them in the best way that they could.

Strangely, I got another call this morning from the same person at the dealership, and all of the progress we had seemingly made toward addressing my concerns had evaporated.

I was really hoping that I was going to be able to end this thread (and indeed the entire situation) on a positive note and actually be able to provide an endorsement of this dealer to the group as one that will stand up and do the right thing when they make a serious mistake, but now I'm really not sure at all....

Please keep the comments coming and I'll certainly keep you updated, and of course post a final wrap-up once we get there. It's always helpful to know which dealers to frequent and which ones you might want to avoid.

Is there some reason why you have not named the dealer in this thread? Is because you have told them you will name them if they don't respond appropriately, and you are waiting?

If you don't get satisfaction, another option is to contact the consumer affairs reporter at a local TV station. Looks like this Atlanta TV station has previously done stories about oil change scams:

Mark,

Thanks for your comments. I'll check that link out....

Honestly, I haven't named them because I'm really trying to give them the chance to make this right and I understand that the road to a good final outcome with a customer in a bad situation is not always smooth.

As far as I know, they are not even aware of this thread. If they act honorably then they should be treated honorably and I will continue to support them as I have previously on this forum....and frankly I'm not sure acting honorably at the tip of a spear is really acting honorably.

I also think that the group benefits more from knowing if a dealer will do the right thing because it's the right thing to do, rather than because they are afraid of some bad exposure.

All I can say, I know exactly how you feel Mattie, as I had exactly exactly the same experience TWICE with two different Hyundais over the last 9 years!!!! But lucky for me, in both cases I smelled burning oil within minutes of driving away (old habits die hard! ;))

Suffice to say neither of my current Hyundai stock go there anymore, even though I traded my Sonata there, as the first time I cut them some slack, the second time however, I raised hell!!! ....

So...As we both (may) know:

If it was RC you are in trouble. :(
If it was EV you may have a fighting chance.
MGA you should be ok. :)!
Although I very much doubt it happened there, if @ JE you are in good hands.:D

Hope it all turns out well for you and feel free to send me a PM, if you I can help with any escalation strategies that I have used to get them to correct these issues in a timely manner...

Thanks David. I'll certainly keep your comments and suggestions in mind....

The latest update is that the regional hyundai service rep is going to come in and review the dealerships actions and findings. According to the dealership there is not much he can do other than make recommendations, so we'll see I guess.

I spent about 30 min with the general manager of the dealership on Friday trying find a resolution to this issue and my many concerns. Nothing concrete but perhaps progress.

The saga continues.....

Get it back on the road with whatever oil they put back in it. Drive it a 100 miles and dump that oil. Get an oil analysis from Blackstone (they are free). Catch a sample of the oil (let a quart run out first) and get an analysis of it ($25)--------preferably at the dealership. That will tell you a lot more than the dealer is ever going to tell you.

Nor would I recommend allowing him to drop the pan and inspect the bearings. If they are fine (likely), the low levels of metal in the oil analysis will confirm that.
