  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Dealers can't or won't sell me a car

This is the weirdest experience I've had with a brand. I did a few test drives and narrowed down what I wanted to buy to the '18 G80 Sport in Polar Ice. I've got decent credit and a decent down payment ready. I've called a number of dealers here in PA and it's like pulling teeth: sales reps are disinterested, sales managers don't call you back, messages go unanswered. There's 0 inventory of Sports in that color in my state, and no dealer will order one. They say it can't be done and I either buy off the lot or try back next quarter.

I'm really weirded out at what Genesis is doing. What the heck is going on?

There are a couple of threads about dealers. What is going on, Hyundai dealers have to decide if they want to be Genesis dealers and have the facilities needed. If they don't have stock they may not be able to get anything right now. Will be a few weeks to get straightened out.

My dealer has 3 Sport in stock but not Polar Ice, only black and white. If you want to travel to New London, i have a discount certificate I'd pass on to you. No Polar ice though.

I may take you up on that offer once they get some back in stock- I'm honestly tired of the 50 shades of gray that most cars come in and wouldn't mind some blue.

Edit: New London, PA, right? :)

Did not realize there was one in PA and I lived in Philly for 35 years. I'm talking about CT, a good 4 hours from Philly area..

I honestly could swing it- my wife and I have friends in the area to visit. I'll give you a ping once, uh, Genesis has cars to sell.

From everything posted here the only 2018 G80 Sports available are the current inventory. Genesis has not shipped any 2018 G80s or G90s in months. It is a mess right now with them trying to get the dealer situation cleared up and get the G70 released. If you can wait you might want to hold off until the 2019 models are released. Otherwise you may have to compromise on your color choice or travel/or pay shipping fees to get that color if one is still available. I have not seen that color in any of the inventory in the Chicago area.

Who knows what colors will be available when the '19 start filling the lots. Back in March, I wanted a G80 Sport in Polar Ice and was told no more were being made for the '18 model run. While I'm not sure if that was BS or not, I haven't seen any listed in the brief time I looked for one.

The title of your thread is not accurate as any dealer would sell you a Polar Ice model if they had one on the lot or could order one. They can't because there aren't any. If you really have to have Polar Ice, buy a different color and have it repainted. Probably only cost you $2000-$3000 for a fresh coat of paint.

I found the last 3 Polar Ices in the US. One dealer with two of them quoted $1300+ to ship, the second refused to speak about it or a dealer to dealer transfer over the phone and wanted me to drive 200+ miles to discuss in person.

Funny- I have a set of Weathertech mats for it already. Guess I'll return them and wait for 2019. Although that S5 Sportback is looking pretty nice.

Sure, once you drive 200 miles and they know you really want the car, your negotiating power has about had it. You may do better driving the 200 miles and then casually start looking around like you never heard of a Genesis before. If it is in a town you'd like to visit at least the trip would not be a total waste if it does not work.

I'm a fan of the Bragg method- I usually only go to a dealer to test drive or drop off a check. I despise negotiating. Last time I did a test drive the salesman had to jump the car because the battery is flat. As he's hooking up the leads to the considerable dust on the car, he tells me I should buy it right now at their price, since they can't keep them in stock. :) I can't stand salesmen.

It can sit on the lot for all I care. I have one more card to play.

Let me get this straight, you bought a set of Weather Tech mats and now you're going to return them because you can't get an '18 G80 in Polar Ice? Ahhhhh, never mind...

Oh, by the way, my Weather Tech mats (black) look great in my red G80 Sport.

I do get what you mean by 50 shades of gray. That's why I went with Havana Red. I thought real hard about one in Casablanca White though. Another nice looking color.

Was that my dealership that quoted the $1300 shipping? We have 2 Polar Ice in stock. One of which is/was a service loaner

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
My local dealer only had 2 2018 in stock and had zero interest in helping me find the one I was looking for. No call backs etc. So went to carmax and bought a like new 2015... very happy.

If your state in your profile is accurate, yeah, it was your dealership. They wouldn't discuss shipping with me; the quote was from my local. Apparently that one is the only Polar Ice in the US that isn't a demo. There's one listed as new in VA but it's the owner's demo/loaner car with a few thousand on it, who was gracious enough to offer to sell it to me used for more than what I would pay for new (if there was any inventory). And that's the 3 in the US.

I want the car, but it's not like I need it or anything. I feel dumb for getting floor mats but I seriously expected to be able to buy the car I wanted when I got back from my travel.

My main bitching is just the dealerships in general during my purchasing experience feel... greasy. Very reluctant to help, very unmotivated, disconnected salesmen, unresponsive to messages, and outright lying and fabrication in person. Maybe it's just Philly that's cursed. But they have a long way to go if they want to compete with BMW & friends.

Those weathertech you purchased are for RWD or AWD? I tried to reuse mine from '15 5.0 RWD and the front passenger doesn't fit '18 AWD. Not sure about the rear, though.
I would be interested as well.

Regarding the disinterest...
No Genesis cars have been shipped to the USA since February. This is due to the Genesis franchise mess.
I was intending to purchase a G80 Ultimate in Blue with a Tan interior. Last time I checked, there was only one in the entire nation. Due to short supply, there are no deals. So... there is no inventory that I like, and I had some unexpected expenses come up that put a cramp in my car budget.

Due to those issues, I am turning in my 2015 Genesis lease tonight, and picking up a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Overland this evening. I will have lifetime MaxCare warranty with $100 deductable and no mileage or time limit.
This car will be over $19K less than the G80. The price fully loaded except trailer tow and off-road stuff is about the same as a top of the line Sonata.
I know it's a very different vehicle, but it has 4X4 with a 2.0 Turbo engine, and all of the safety tech stuff plus auto parking. I plan on keeping this vehicle into my retirement. Early build Cherokees had trans issues, but that has been good since mid 2015. Build quality is probably not quite up to Hyundai, but it's decent, and I'll have the lifetime warranty for anything that crops up. I have several co-workers who have them, and in that small sampling, they have no major issues.

I'm a little disappointed that Genesis was not in the cards for me at this time, since I really loved the car. I'm still a big fan, but due to lease timing, I couldn't even explore G70 as an option. I also doubt that there will be any decent deals on G70 for quite some time from introduction.

I'll still lurk in the forum from time to time.

Good luck with the Jeep. I just don't trust Chrysler and it's family of cars due to low reliability ratings, especially ongoing transmission issues that plague them.

Make sure you confirm your recall issue has been resolved on the 2019:

May 25 2018

Cylinder damage or camshaft failure can cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with 2.0L engines. The engines in these vehicles may be missing valve stem keepers, which can allow the valve to drop into the engine cylinder causing engine damage. These engines may also have a reversed camshaft cap that can damage the camshaft bearing causing camshaft failure.

Hopefully you have better luck with MaxCare than these folks:

That recall only affected 14 units. Mine was built on 8/9, well after that.

We've had 5 FCA vehicles in the my immediate family since 2010. All have been pretty trouble free. If I add my son to the mix, make that 9 in total. The 9 speed trans had a rocky start in 2014 and early 2015. It's been pretty solid since then.

Take a look at Jeep Cherokee Problems on car complains site:
There is a graph.. Pretty low complaints except for 2014 and 2015. The vast majority of those were from the 9 speed trans. Known issue; the trans has had both parts and software changes. Keep in mind that FCA has been selling over 20K units of the Cherokee per month.

Some of the auto mags still diss the trans, but it's pretty much the same unit that is in my wife's Pacifica, and it's fine in that vehicle. I've only had the Jeep for 5 days, but I have no problem with the way the trans behaves.

I did several test drives prior to purchasing, and my take is this: The Cherokee with the 2.4 Tiger Shark engine is not a great match to the 9 speed. The 3.2L V6 is pretty good, but IMHO the 2.0 4 Cyl. Turbo is the best match.
I have several co-workers that have KL series Cherokees, and all have been happy. That said, all makes have some issues as evidenced by threads in every maker's forums including this one.

I'm not worried about the Maxcare warranty. Mopar sells tons of these, and judging by the comments in the various Jeep/Mopar forums, most are happy, and there are many repeat customers. A quick read of the Hyundai Forum will also show many posters who complain about Hyundai not honoring their warranty.
I take most of that with a grain of salt.

Bottom line, I agree that Hyundai is generally world class in build quality, and somewhat better than FCA.
We will see how the Cherokee pans out. Most of my experience with Hyundai products was very good. The '13 Azera was the best car I have ever owned. The only mechanical issue was a rattle in the sun roof, which was fixed with a bit of felt tape. The Genesis was good, but I had a hand full of minor issues right off the bat.
So far so good for the Jeep.
