Deciding on a Genesis 3.8

Went to test drive the ultimate today. Absolutely loved it. Car is in immaculate shape. There is a tear in the back seat leather that CarMax is going to replace completely to fix but other than that I really like it. The HUD and big screen and powered trunk really helped me decide on the Ultimate.

Yep, you'll like it. I know other disagree, but if you are going for a luxury car, do it right and get the Ultimate.

I was just looking at a couple of Rolls Royce Dawn on line today. One is black, the other is Midnight Sapphire Blue. I really prefer the blue but it is $100 more. Should I decide to buy one for $340,050 I'm going to spend the extra $100 to get the color I want.

Question for everyone:

Are the lights on the 2016 3.8 ultimate led? By lights I mean the lights on the license plate, interior courtesy lighting, trunk, etc.

Looks to be a nice vehicle. Enjoy!

I got a chuckle out of these back-to-back statements ...

Lol I did notice that after I posted and laughed out loud lol.

That’s a beautiful color!

Everything is LED except the turn signals and headlights. kinda dumb.

Not so much if you look at the timeline. The 2015 model was in production about mid year of 2014. To meet that production date the lights had to be finalized probably mid 2012 or sooner. At that time, few lighting options were available and they were very expensive. Lexus started using them on the LS600 before that but that was a much more expensive model than Genesis. It was easier to engineer them into lower power lights like tail lights so they appeared there first.

Any updates or regrets on the purchase?

Still trying to decide I have been looking at the 2015 5.0 ultimate. Can’t find 2016 5.0 anywhere. I’m worried because the 2015 year seems to have electrical issues but I’d like to have the 5.0.

There was a recall on cars built from Feb to May. They should have been repaired.

Keep in mind, one problem on a forum may be discussed many times by many people so consider the sources as compared to problems with other cars.

There will be more 2016 models coming in from leases soon if you can wait. It was around this time that the dealers would have started selling that my.

The HUD and big screen and powered trunk really helped me decide on the Ultimate. Also it has better gas mileage. Sure I’d like less miles on the car but this is only for a couple of years until I can get a G80 sport. The ivory interior is beautiful. Very handsome car. Overall very happy. Will probably make the purchase within the next week. Thank you everyone for your input. First thing is to put the wing emblem on the back lol.

You went to Woodbridge correct? 2016, 40k mi, small tear on the rear seat that was patched? Scratches on the black driver door panel? "Clean" Carfax?

So...Uhh.... I bought this car, and returned it 48 hrs later. If you want to know more I'll spill.

They ordered a new backseat leather cover and said it was replaced last week.

Yeah I saw they transferred it to MD.

So this as back in mid-July. I went to Woodbridge to go look at this 2016 3.8 RWD Ivory interior Genesis. After a test drive I wanted to take it home for the evening and think it over. They would not let me, company policy. I called Chantilly Hyundai to ask if they would let me take one home for the night. I was told no. CarMax told me I had 7 days to return the car no questions asked. I was skeptical of this but said ok after they told me they don’t even process paperwork for 14 days. I took the car home. I was pleased! Drove good! Quiet nice interior, (minus the back seat rip) I was sold! Took it home parked in the garage and played with buttons! Found the trunk button. When the trunk closed it made some sort of rubbing noise. I figured it was because of the “rear bumper applique” being a little close to the trunk lid in the closed position. At the time my feelings were “ooOOoo nice” someone cared about this car since they put the pain protection film on the trunk, doors and door handles. I went to a buddy’s house the next day to see what he thought of it (he’s an insurance adjuster) and on the way there I get a “Check BSD System” and the blind spot system would no longer function. Kind of bummed. I drove the rest of the way to MD. Buddy looked at it and was like yeah nice car! wtf it up with the check bsd???

We started looking and he found the rear of the car was repainted. They clear coated over the protective film. He found that odd but said eh maybe it just needed to be calibrated due to the extra thickness of the paint / clear coat. I called Hyundai in Chantilly and scheduled them to do a used car inspection and to run the code on the BSD system. I take it in. They bring me back while its up on a lift. They point out that the rear bumper has been off and they can see damage to the blind spot monitor sensor bracket it’s been tweaked. They told me they believed the car might have been hit and the warranty does not cover parts damaged in an accident. Funny, Carfax showed no such issues. I paid the diagnostic fee and took the paperwork for repair back to CarMax. $1800 repair estimate…

Another thing to note the “new” tires they put on it are CHEAP bottom barrel tires. I was kind of peeved they would cheap out on something as essential as tires. Go look up Ironman…. yikes

I WAS HOT!

So I go back to CarMax and talk to the service folks they said don’t worry its covered under a 30 days warranty through CarMax. Great, but now I want a 75k warranty on top of whatever BS CarMax crap is included. They said ok its $$$$ and we will refund your diagnostic fee. I gave them the benefit of the doubt said, eh shit happens it’s a nice car. I agreed to finalize everything. They hand me my warranty stuff and told me “ok you have 35k miles left on your warranty.” ….UHHHH… No no. I want 75k on top of the mileage on the car! They told me it was going to cost $$$$ more. NOOOOOOOPE you told me one thing and now you are telling me something else WTF after all the other BS, I’m done. So I get up and hand them the key. The regional manager happens to walk in and get all buddy buddy with the employees. He sees me standing visually pissed and asks how I’m doing. He said sorry to hear about everything and he’s sorry but there was nothing they could do about the warranty cost, it is what is. Whatever dude, take your broken POS and shove it!

Needless to say I had a quiet carless ride home.

BUT 2 weeks later my buddy found me a 2015 5.0 Ultimate (car in signature) for the same price with less miles then the CarMax one. I jumped on it. Haven’t looked back. Get the V8!!!! More importantly get what you want to get, colors, features, etc. I found mine eventually.

Things I discovered after it was way too late:

2015-2016 Ultimate DIS not compatible with android auto and apple via update. BOOOO!

2015 DRLs are amber NOT LED, Not really a big deal but it was something I kind of wanted

V8 wheels are staggered and directional (so much for easy tire rotations)

HUD does not display music song titles only station names or channel names

Light leather, while it looks amazing… is a BITCCCCCCHHHHHH to keep clean

Looks like previous owner didn't care too much about cleanliness. Look at the seats and steering wheel, how greasy and oily they are. Look at the steering position switch, inside of door handle pocket.... All these items are red flags for me (my personal opinion and approach) and lets me think that the car has been neglected as far as the maintenance goes. It still might be a good project car but I would do a good and detailed inspection on it. Check the tires for even wear and cupping (mine looked like sh$* and I was surprised why people get their cars to that point. They were unevenly worn, car pulled to the right like crazy and it was vibrating. I found it as a great project car and could not be happier when put new tires on and replaced all four brake pads and rotors (OEM) ).

I bought mine used too and needed to bring back the steering wheel, seats, armrests and other leather components to it's original condition:

Please excuse dirty floor mats. I already put brand new ones on.

Man dude thank you so much for this. I really appreciate it. I’ve been seriously considering the 5.0. I think I will get one. I’ve been looking at this 2015 Ultimate 5.0 in GA. I have to buy at carmax because I’m getting a substantial family discount. I’m definitely not going with that 2016 though.

Man the Led DRL is a must for me. I love how that accent light goes around the headlight. The 2015 doesn’t have this or it’s just like a parking light? Anyway to modify?

You can turn the LED on with the parking lights mode. There is no easy way to modify. The wiring harness is different between 2015 and 2016 and the computers are programed differently. I was a little butt hurt about too it but I just cruise around in parking light mode.

Someone made a good point on here a while ago... EVERYONE and I MEAN EVERYONE has LED DRLs now. Not many cars have amber DRLs these days. Kind of unique if that's your thing.

BTW.. I have a shiny new trunk emblem I no long need........ since I bought a 2015 :)
