I am seeking recommendations for a diagnostic code checker. Can I use an off-the-shelf tester, or is there a recommended tester for my 2020 G90? For instance, this one from Amazon:

the one you have selected should work fine. to my knowledge any odb2 scanner should work.

I use an elm327 and torque lite. eBay has the elm327 for $2.64 and torque lite is free at play store. With a smart phone you can see the dts and do a reset. There are many other apps you can use for free. For most problems it will be all you need.
