  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Dipstick Tip Broken off

True.

BMW,Audi, and GM have had many issues related to the grade of plastics used in their timing chain guides that seem to break just after about 100k miles.

They would have been better off just using timing belts in those engines since the broken timing chain guides required an complete timing system overhaul around 100k miles anyway. Timing belts are generally easier to change than a timing chain.

It also seems that Hyundai went with a less durable grade of plastic for the dipstick tip.
This forum is an excellent place for Great information.
After reading about this problem , I went and replaced my dipstick before it broke.
I can't understand why plastic?
I suppose it's all about the $$?
Lots of great people and Info on this forum.

Thank you all..👍

Hey Kraig, like I reported earlier, they replaced mine after they broke it free of charge, however, I was thinking about getting the metal one, can I ask you to post a link and let me know where you bought yours? Or anyone else? Thanks I really appreciate it…✌🏼🤙🏼🫡

I had purchased a direct replacement.
I think the website is Hyundai parts .com?
Not sure ?
It was 4 years ago.
I only had 30k on the car at that time.
Just did not want to take any chances. Even though it's highly unlikely the broken piece could cause any damage to the engine.

Thanks ma man, yes, I know that website. Thank you very much. Have a blessed day.🤙🏼🫡

I wonder if the 2012-2014 3.3 dipstick is the same length? I see that is steel. I see some of those advertised.
The cheap plastic dipstick is a sour spot with me as mine broke off just after warranty. I have owned my Genesis since new and do all my own all changes.
The plastic piece is in there somewhere and seems to be "unsettled" at oil change time where I might see the light at idle or even at speed once or twice. Then the piece floats back within a few days and is not a problem until the next oil change.
I had to buy the replacement with Yellow plastic tip. I am sure that was done to make it easier to read the oil level. It will grenade like the first one I am sure. Hopefully after I have traded the car in.
I am at 110,000 miles still love the car.

No problem, the forum is here to help fellow Genesis owners by having members pass on their knowledge and experience to other members. We may not always be correct about some information or agree on all matters, but we know enough to hopefully help each other out.

Hyundai is not the only automaker with plastic oil dipstick tips. My old Mercedes had plastic oil dipstick tips as well(2002 E55 AMG and 2011 E350 4matic). However, they were build much sturdier than the Hyundai dipsticks.

Yes, however, does anyone know where you can get a all metal dipstick for a 2015 Caspian Black Genesis 3.8 w/ultimate package?

No.

I replaced my old 2015 dipstick with a newer dipstick before my old dipstick tip broke off. I decided to spend $20 for a new dipstick over having to pull off the lower oil pan to retrieve some broken plastic later on.

The newer dipstick tip is more flexible(and a lighter color) than my old dip stick tip, so maybe Hyundai "quietly" updated it.

Thank you sir, well, since they replaced mine for free, and also pulled off the pan and showed me the tip that broke off I will tomorrow pull it and see what it looks like.
However, from your picture and again, thank you for that I think side-by-side. You are just seeing a brand new one compared to one that has been in hot engine oil and is discolored from age?

No problem.

I did consider the color change could just be more from an age difference vs. material change. The old dip stick tip could have been more flexible before years of use as well. Either way, the newer produced dipstick tip seems less likely to break anytime soon compared to very stiff older dipstick tip I swapped it out.
