  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Was your tech pkg Driver Info System (DIS), incl. Navi, difficult to use at first?

Has anyone come across a full blown video tutorial or demo to help one master the Driver Information System (DIS) including navigation menus (for a 2013 Genesis w/tech package)?

I've had the car for a few weeks, and I'm still puzzled daily by the GUI of the DIS. At first I thought it was the controller/joystick that was causing my issues, but after a few days I realized that part was fine, it was the actual user interface that I wasn't getting. I now have the basic principles down, but what I'm hoping to find is a tutorial to learn the next level of complexity.

I recently I drove a car full of teens to a school party about an hour away, at a complicated location that I was unfamiliar with. The start time of the event was at the worst possible time, during the Friday night commute out of Silicon Valley, and we got caught in several traffic jams along the way, all of which would have been easy to re-route if I understood the navigation GUI. I couldn't for the life of me figure out at first how to re-route around the traffic while I was driving, including trying BlueLink. (Note to self: never call BlueLink for the first time with scornful teens watching, or you will look and feel like a complete jackass.)

I abandoned Bluelink after I couldn't even get a person on the line, and I ended up finding my way through the Navi menu just enough to figure out a reroute work-around by de-selecting freeways on the route. But it was painful and time consuming, and not at all intuitive, and I lost at least 20-30 minutes by not knowing how to utilize the tool properly.

After dropping off the kids, that's when I realized I really have a lot to learn if I ever want to use the system effectively, and the best way to learn is definitely not when I'm already in motion, let alone late.

I came back and searched around YouTube and didn't find anything comprehensive enough for what I want, which is to methodically learn the entire system and all the key short cuts.

The manual doesn't do much for me, as it doesn't seem to be set up as a systematic learning document, but rather just a catalog with diagrams and features. A lot of the descriptions and language are downright confusing, at least compared to the Navi in my past car -- a Honda Civic Hybrid, which was simple to use but highly user friendly. (The car itself couldn't get up even a small hill, but that's another story).

What I'd really love to find is a video or animated demo with a few hours of tutorials that would take me through the basics systematically, plus teach tips and tricks.

Anyone come across such a thing?

I know this sounds like a lot of negativity in this post, but other than the DIS challenges, which I fully own as my own problem more so than a design flaw, I so adore the Genesis. I just don't think like a Genesis engineer I guess. :}

NO!

It is probably my biggest complaint with Hyundai. I consider myself reasonably tech capable but I have had questions and the dealer isn't real knowledgeable and I have not been able to find videos to explain use. I even complained because on 'my hyundai' the videos do not even show. I complained to site and they have taken the youtube videos down. VERY POOR support.
I figured out how to use most features thru 'trial and error' and I shouldn't have to do that.

The issues you are having is why I read and study the manuals of my cars. My Mercedes Nav manual is about 300 pages and the Genesis DIS manual(282 pages) is better and gives owners all the info. It takes time to get out the manual and sit in the car and go through the system, but it is necessary to master the tech in newer Luxury cars. The Genesis system is easier than my Mercedes and is easier than the 2005 Acura we had.

I agree, however I have poured through the manuals for over 2 weeks. The explanations aren't substantive enough to learn real world use, and the only way seems to be trial and error, usually while driving.

The vocabulary in the manual and in the user interface seems non-intuitive and awkward. I have to read things a few times to understand what it means because the sentences are formed in a weird syntax that is not typical for the English language.

I've found the Hyundai web site to be difficult to navigate as well. Just trying to download the manuals for a 2013 Genesis has proven to be impossible. I got stuck in circular loop over and over, and sent on a wild goose chase. When I click on "manuals" it sends me to "my dashboard" with no mention of manuals. When I log in, sometimes my password works, sometimes it doesn't. There are not seamless transitions between the sections of the site, and I seem to get logged out about 3-4 times per session. Their communications are lacking, IMO.

Sigh. I sound like a big complainer. I really do love this car, but am just having a hard time understanding how to master the "how to" part, outside of the basics, and the documentation does not seem on par to me.

An informal social media type video series explaining various use cases of the complex system would go a long way to helping new customers like me to accelerate the comfort level.

No such problems with the Premium package touch screen. It's always a good idea, though, to pull over for a few minutes to perform any lengthy Nav selections. I don't use voice activation for anything, other than phone calls.
