If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

SPECS...13 R-spec with 17000 miles. Last oil change was done by myself around 1000 miles ago when i switched to mobile 1 synthetic 5w30 with a MAHLE OX 351D ECO filter. Oil level now is a tad bit above the fill mark on the stick. Never had any issues with burning oil.

Prior oil and filter was dealer oil non-synthetic with oem filter (oil changes done by dealer)

Take a listen to this video I made tonight. Can you hear the tap/tap/tap noise? Im NOT talking about the fast pitch tapping coming from the high pressure fuel pumps. There is a loud tapping coming from the driver side of the engine near the valve cover. You can hear it when the hood is closed but much more prominent when its open.

This is the first time im hearing this noise so not much time to diagnose. The engine was warm (not hot). I will check tomorrow on a cold start up

Audio is poor, if it were clearer I could probably make a guess towards a lifter.

Buy the OEM filter from the dealer and replace it. Save the receipt.

It was hard to pick out the sounds from the video, even with headphones on. My Rspec has 450 miles on it, and there is a sound coming from what sounds like the drivers side that is like " Tick....Tick...Tick". Is that normal?

The ticking noise is the electronic fuel injectors firing. It sound normal to me.

I heard the engine tap. I cranked my headphones up and listened you can hear it slowly even with the clicking of the DI injectors.
It sounds to me like a stuck lifter. I would take in it have it looked at.

working a new video now

Their are known issues with aftermarket oil filters for the Genesis, stick with OEM.

Ive read about the problems with aftermarket filters but i thought the MAHLE was basically the OEM equivalent, just with a different name.

Im leaning towards a stuck lifter as well. If it is a stuck lifter, how could the filter contribute to that?

the fast paced tick tick tick is normal. Theres different tap going on in my video. working to get a new vid

ok someone else hears it...good.

I would change the filter before taking it in........and not mentioning anything about the old one.

ok this is the best video i can get. filmed this after the car was hot (driving for around 20 minutes). you can definitely hear the loud tap. noise is coming from the driver side top of the motor

thoughts? stuck lifter? seriously, could a non-oem filter cause this noise? I mean, anything is possible but what are the symptoms/effects of using a non-oem filter?

Best guess without using a stethoscope... Lifter. I've seen lifters make more noise after getting fully warmed up than during cold runs.

Get a mechanics stethoscope for $4-5 and listen to all of them.

A friend of a friend who is a tech for hyundai heard the video and said he heard this noise twice on this type of motor on 2 different cars. I forgot exactly what he said but something along the lines of the camshaft rubbing on a loose rocker or lifter and both cars had the whole engine replaced. He has also see quite a few with broken wrist pins making this tapping noise

Idk if it matters or not but I'm putting in a oem oil filter before I go to the dealer. I'm also debating whether or not I should remove the aftermarket intake and put the stock airbox back in. Better safe then sorry? We all know how dealers love to play the blame game

I had similar sound coming from my 09 v8, you can check my video here: http://www.genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=14249

Long story short, the noise went away when the oil was replaced with thicker one. Other than that, dealership mechanic didn't know what it was.

I have similar mileage as the OP on my 13 and have heard a similar noise, seems to have gone away in recent days, not sure why. Also on startup it would rev up just as the OP's engine does but when it would settle down to idle rpm you'd hear a few distinct taps (three), not sure if related. This all started after a dealer oil change so not sure if it is the filter.

how much thicker did you go? im using 5w30 synthetic for the past 1000miles as compared to the dealer oil 5w20 non-syn

Yeah, went from 5-20 to 0-20 to 5-20 (that's when I noticed the knocking sound) to 5-30, syn in all cases.

However just noticed yesterday that the sound is back. Don't know really what to do with this. Either get rid of the car or wait till engine dies (if it does) and try to find something at junk yard.

Likely problems:
  • Lifter
  • Crank Bearing
  • exhaust manifold leak

Confirmed with an oem supplier that the part number for the 13 r-spec oil filter is 26320-3c30a. Bought one online and the attached pics are what showed up. Mahle ox351. The filter that's in there now is a mahle ox351d.

Anyone know what the difference is between the "D" version?? And what are the little rubber o-rings for?
