  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

OK I know all about the ESC button not really disabling the ESC and that you can pull the fuse to disable the function. But I'm a little confused after todays events.

A couple of buddies at work are always trying to get me to do a burnout in the R Spec. Today, I decided to try a small burnout, thinking not much would happen. I was just playing around a little at first. I had ESC on and held the brakes as I applied some throttle. I could hear the rear wheels spin a little and then felt the Traction Nanny kick in.

They were still trying to get me so I turned the ESC off by just pushing the button. I then held the brakes and applied some throttle. I let off the brakes, applie dabout half throttle, and wound up leaving a nice shinney black stripe about 20 feet long. No Traction Nanny ever kicked in. The Genney accelerated just fine with one wheeel spinning and smoke coming up. I could smell the rubber inside the car.

So I'm a bit confused on two things.
1 The Traction Nanny not kicking in when ESC was off and the wheel was spinning.
2 Why only one wheel spinning?

Or is it that the Traction Nanny was working some and keeping one wheel from spinning? I thought we had LSD in the rear? I know I've seen and heard that with the fuse pulled, you can lay 2 nice black stripes.

I thought it was LSD as well.

I have found that with the ESC off, it will roast the backs all the way through the first gear and then the steering wheel will meet your face when it shifts to 2nd (and the traction nanny kicks in)

OK, I just went and took a closer look at the marks.

With ESC ON and holding the brakes, there were two small black marks.

With ESC OFF, there is one long black mark from the right wheel.

So I guess we do have LSD, but it seems to be controlled/modulated, by the Traction Nanny.

I know that mine shifted thru a few gears, but the Nanny never fully kicked in and gave me a face plant. Was a nice even spin till it got traction. I probably could have spun it longer if I would have given it more gas. But then again, I'd probably gotten into trouble as well. ;)

One black stripe is normal if the diff doesn't have a mechanical diff lock or limited slip of some kind.

If I remember correctly, the 2009 4.6 V8 sedans had the LSD; V6s used the traction control system to selectively apply one rear brake to control wheel spin to simulate a LSD. Based on comments on this forum, sometime after 2009, I gather no V6 or 4.6 V8 sedans came with a true LSD; all used a plain differential and electronic controls to mimic a LSD. I don't know about the R-specs.

My early 2009 V8 will just burp the tires from a standstill, ESC ON or OFF, when mashing the gas. I've never tried the fuse pull method to really disable ESC. However... mashing the gas while the steering wheel is cranked a bit (e.g. for a basic right turn) will lead to one rear wheel spinning for quite some time. I can't "peel out" in a straight line but can leave tracks (or at least 1 track) in a turn from a standing start... or probably while doing donuts.

^I was also under the impression that the 2009 had the LSD, but when I pulled the ESP fuse and did a burnout, I only got the one wheeled wonder to my surprise. I put the car on jacks a few weekends ago to rotate the tires and while I had the car up I spun the drivers side wheel and the passenger side rear wheel spun the opposite direction. To my understanding a diff with LSD the wheels would spin the same direction as one another.

Any thoughts about this Mike?

Yes, you are correct. The Gennys have open axle. Which sucks. I just looked to see if the R-Spec has a clutch pack or other mechanical LSD (which it the only one that really works). So far no info that it does. I need to contact Torsen and see If they have a system for this. They make the world famous Torsen (originally from Gleason, then bought put by two foreign companies) brand system. Which Ihave installed off and on in the past 3 decades on various cars/trucks that used open diff (and some that had limited slip clutches that were crap). And used Torsen with Traction Control with the brakes (same as ESC).

TC is as useless as ESC for this purpose. And really stupid on a wet boat ramp, snow, mud, or the track. Plus burns up the brake pads for those who insist on slipping the wheels for various reasons.

This system allows true differential while turning while still applying torque up to 80%+, if needed, to the wheel with the most traction. An amazing system.

The Genesis Coupe is listed as auto that they make a OEM product for. Depending on the axle and diff design, might work in our sedans.

Anyway, the Torsen uses expensive worm and gear system instead of clutch packs.

If you want to play in the big leagues against the fastest machines in straight line, and also have the best possible combination of traction and handling while "in the turns", there is nothing that comes close.

Looks like you can buy straight from them online for less than $800. That is the deal of the century.

I was under the impression that the car had a LSD. But I now am thinking differently. Maybe it does use the ESC to control it and act like a LSD. I did notice that I was apperently vering to the right when I was smoking the tire.

As for a aftermarket LSD, I've installed one in the past in a Chevy. I don't remember the brand but it used a cone instead of a clutch pak. It worked great. It was a open diff in normal driving. But as soon as you gave it a little gas, it would lock right up. Worked great.

I'd be interested in possibly having one installed in the Genney if the price was right and it was found for fact that we do not have a true LSD.

reading this makes me happier i got the premium lol, still wish it had the brembos though.
