ok...so here it is. I received this email this morning from Borla Performace.

Hello!

This is Alvin Tolosa with Borla Performance Industries. You expressed interest in a Borla exhaust system by submitting your email for a product announcement. We will begin R&D in the next few weeks.
We would like to know if you have a continued interest in an exhaust for your Hyundai Genesis Sedan V8. If you’ve already made a purchase or completed a custom exhaust using our Borla Universal muffler or other muffler system, please let us know.

In parallel with our efforts, we would like to hear from owners. We would appreciate hearing from you and your ideas regarding preference in sound, look, and price range. Borla is known to bring out the best in sound and performance in American & European V8 engines and we look forward to development on Hyundai’s new V8 power plant. BTW, we’ve offered past and current Hyundai products in the Tiburon and Genesis Coupe models. We look forward to your responses.

Thanks for your interest!

AND HERE IS MY REPLY: (I know some of you may disagree with my comments, and that is fair, but at least we're getting somewhere!!)

Mr. Tolosa,

Hello and good day to you as well!

Thanks so much for your reply!

First and foremost, in my opinion, Borla Performance holds the number one spot in quality, sound, and performance. Congratulations to you and the team for a terrific product!

A few weeks ago, I almost bit the bullet and purchased some Borla universal mufflers. However, I did not. I want that professional look and sound that only a pre-fabricated design can give me.

After several discussions on www.GenesisOwners.com concerning exhaust, I feel as if I speak on behalf of all the owners in my next few statements.

We understand that just by changing the exhaust, from the cats…back, will only yield so much actual performance gains. To do this modification on the “performance” side, we would need to start with the headers; intake…etc. I think what most of us are “really” looking for is an axle-back system. Most of us do not want to modify our cars on the performance side because of the lack of aftermarket parts, the expense, as well as the lack of Hyundai Genesis techies. The car has not been on the streets long enough for those individuals to come out of the woodwork.

To most of us, all we are interested in is that deep low growl…after all, this IS a luxury car…not a Charger, and we want to keep it that way. A fine tuned exhaust note would set this car off beautifully. However, if we wanted a “race” style setup, we would hit up the Flowmaster Line. They can be LOUD.

For reference, I am pretty sure that Borla manufactures the TRD exhaust found on most Toyotas. A good comparison, as far as loudness, would be the Tundra. Borla (TRD) did a fantastic job with that system.

As far as my personal opinion, a simple to install axle-back system well under $500 would sell TWICE as many units than a full $800+ CAT-back system.

As far as aesthetics, dual Porche-style tips seem to be the hottest, however, a big oval with Borla stamped on it would look great as well. Something similar to the current stock oval that is on the Genesis now would look great.

Mr. Tolosa, I have faith that if Borla were to build an axle-back system (that fits the V6 and V8)…rather inexpensively, you would be surprised at how much you actually sell.

If you were to design this system, ship it to me and let me install it, I would upsell your product all over YOUTUBE and on our website, www.Genesisowners.com. I can even set up a group buy.

Some members could not wait. They went out and purchased some Magnaflow Universal mufflers…which do sound pretty good…but a little loud for my personal taste. They are also very affordable.

When you get the chance, you can check out some of my videos here at [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmVKaMFYQvw"]YouTube- 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 ESC MOD[/ame].

Anywho, I know R&D on things like this can become rather expensive…but if kept simple, it can prove to be a money maker rather quickly.

Let me be your “go-to” guy for information and together, along with GenesisOwners.com, we can make everybody happy!

Again, thanks for your reply and I look forward to doing business with you soon!!! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks,

Matt Reynolds

Re: Exhaust---personal email from borla!!

The Magnaflow catback exhaust specifically designed for the Genesis launches in less than two weeks - let's see what Borlas got

Re: Exhaust---personal email from borla!!

Borla is my favorite performance Muffler. I would certainly buy one for our 4.6L Borrego. I use it on my supercharged 4.7L Dakota and it sounds awesome. Really nice while cruising around and rumbles at WOT.

Re: Exhaust---personal email from borla!!

Thanks for sharing the info with us.
I personally don't plan on upgrading, but if they were to offer a decent system that's NOT TOO LOUD, I might consider it.
What I'd like to get sound-wise is a little more growl/rumble when accelerating, but as much quietness in the cabin like the stock system.
Meaning, NO DRONE!
I hate drone noises, and had enough of it when I was into pocket rockets.

What I would love is a slightly louder system that shows a hint of a performance powerplant like the AMGs do.

Re: Exhaust---personal email from borla!!

Here is the latest.

I have been discussing things with Alvin all day...from the "whisper-valves" to a price point...

They will be receiving a Genesis within the next week and will begin the R&D process associated with fabricating an exhaust system.

They are unsure as to whether or not it will be an axle-back or cat-back but Im sure both options will be taken into consideration.

I noticed some have mentioned "drone" issues with the Magnaflows and I discussed that with Mr. Tolosa as well. He said that they fine tune, with proprietary software, the exhaust system to limit some or all the drone.

He has tasked me with getting the opinion of our members about the style of tips that we think would look best...so, I started a poll!

PLEASE VOTE even if you do not have any plans on upgrading your exhaust system. Just tell us what you think would look best!

Thanks folks and I encourage you to check out www.borla.com and see how state-of-the-art this fabrication process really is!

Anywho....VOTE!!!! :o

I've always been a sucker for dual ovals (Bentley GT)

I, too, would like the dual oval style, but I'm not sure if the rear cut-outs have enough space to fit that kind of style.
I'd be happy with dual cylinder.

This is Alvin from Borla Performance in California. Thanks for this post and your feedback. We'll have a V8 Sedan here next week. As mentioned, we'll start with baseline measurements and go from there. We'll look at this whisper valve, take measurements, then get to work. Most people know Borla Performance for our systems in muscle cars. We have some experience in creating rear sections and cat-back exhausts for V8's. Here's our latest in vehicle-specific sound-tuning technology:

I look forward to hearing more about owners' preference on the tip design.

That video was great. I currently have a S series on my supercharged Dakota 4.7L. I have a Borrego 4.6L, same engine as the Genesis 4.6L and just curiuos if you will be looking into a system for that as well. Or at least a muffler anyway.
Thanks.

:welcome: Glad you decided to join us Alvin! I look forward to hearing from you and your knowledge of how the exhaust system works! As I mentioned in our email...I build Rockets...not exhaust! :D So any information you can bring to the table is an opportunity for me (us) to learn something new! Thank you for what you do!

Re: Exhaust---personal email from Borla!! ***NEW POLL***

OK - So I don't know much about exhausts but what I do know after watching the video that Alvin posted was Borla takes into account much more than just metal piping.

If Borla can produce a system for the Genesis and at a price point I'm comfortable with I would purchase one.

I do like the touring edition for sure.... possibly the S as well.

I'll save the ATTACK system for something else.

Re: Exhaust---personal email from Borla!! ***NEW POLL***

I must be getting too old. I found all the systems too loud...especially for the type of car the Genesis sedan is. The ATAK system was ridiculous. In the video the narrator really had to raise his voice to be heard. The droning sound of that exhaust would annoy the heck out of me.

Yep...your old...HA!!!;) (snickering softly...Im not too young anymore myself)

I think the touring version would sound good on the Genesis...but we need to keep in mind that every V8, every bend in the tubing, every muffler will produce a different sound.

Im sure Alvin will give us what were looking for though. He understands that its a "luxury" car...not a hot rod. However, some of us may like the ATAK sounds. It would be great if he could do the same tests on the Genesis as he did on the Camero...but that would probably take a WHILE to fabricate and a LOT of money to do so...as well as a not-so-good return on investment.

Who knows...we may be surprised!!! :)

Personally, I like this sound. Its just loud enough!

Thanks for your comments. I'd like to respond regarding this video and sound.
We wanted to demonstrate the differences in sound between our new ATAK, S-Type and Touring exhausts. ATAK is our new technology that is vehicle specific (not a stand-alone universal muffler) and available where multiple sound options are available. At this time, I believe the Genesis Sedan will have a single sound option.

Regarding cabin resonance or drone, detecting or isolating cabin resonance is almost impossible in a video due to the nature of these sounds reflecting-off surfaces. The effect is much different in an enclosed space than playback on loudspeakers.

Back to the Genesis Sedan V8, we plan to build a system with sound appropriate for the majority of owners. We're confident in offering a louder than stock system with a lower, aggressive exhaust note. In aftermarket exhausts, Borla is not known to have the loudest exhaust systems. We look at each vehicle invidually to get the best in performance and sound. We also use the best materials and stand behind our products. Be assured we're aware of cabin resonance and the need for performance. Thanks again for your interest!

Re: Exhaust---personal email from Borla!! ***NEW POLL***

Matt,

What exactly did you do to unlock the ESC? I searched for it but could not find a thread. I'm VERY interested in laying a couple of black stripes myself.

Re: Exhaust---personal email from Borla!! ***NEW POLL***

The corvette I traded in for my genesis (I've got a family now...) had a Borla Stinger on it. I've been looking around at the other threads for replacing the exhaust (magnaflow mainly) but will wait to hear back on your progress at Borla. Thanks!

Funny, I traded in an '08 Vette for the Genesis.
Not a usual trade Hyundai dealer gets.
I had Corsa Sports on mine and loved it.
I miss my Vette so much since the weather is nice out, but it was my time to move on.

Yes. We are working on this and we'll share more news very soon.(Yes that's a GT-R on the right)
BTW, the rear sections weigh 47 lbs and the front weighs 20 lbs. We're still looking for your feedback in look, sound, and price range. Thanks everyone!
