Hey Guys,

Can anyone clarify for me if there is an actual difference between the exhausts on the 3.8 and the 4.6 sedans? I would like to purchase an aftermarket exhaust such as the Magnaflow or Borla but the availability is listed as being specific to the 4.6 V8 only.

Visually, the exhaust setups look the same to me and since they are cat-backs it would be easy to imagine that they are the same from the cats to the rear mufflers. I can't see Hyundai having reinvented the wheel for two cars that share the same chassis etc besides the engine and transmission. Perhaps it's in how the exhaust is tuned?

There's some listings on eBay from a place called ACDC Performance that lists Magnaflow cat-backs for the 3.8 and the images display the same part number as for the 4.6. The Magnaflow site itself does not even list anything for the 3.8 sedan, just the coupe. Perhaps I should call Magnaflow or Borla directly and ask them but perhaps all they've ever worked with and know about is the 4.6 hence the reason for supporting it only.

Thanks for any feedback.

I'm sure they're different. Pipe diameter must be different as well.

Referring to my parts fiche, the drawings for the V6 and V8 exhausts are identical. Part numbers are different though. This may mean that the internal design of the mufflers is different or pipe diameters are different.

My sense is that a V8 Borla, etc. will fit your car using the same hangers. You might have some slight problems with the front connections, but I think any competent muffler shop could fix that.

Measure the diameter of your exhaust pipe. I will compare it with my own V8's measurement.

Thanks for that. I used a pair of electronic calipers to check the pipe from the cats to the muffler which yielded a measurement of 1.95" in diameter. The exit pipe from the muffler to the tips measured in at 2.14" in diameter which is more of what I would have expected all the way around.

The Magnaflow specs have a 2.5" diameter pipe with a 3" exit.

I couldn't find actual specs for the Borla.

I would think that as long as the flanges and the bends are the same, I should probably be able to fit one of these systems on the car. As you mentioned, it may take a little customization from an installer.

I would love you hear a V6 Genesis Sedan with a catback kit. I think it would sound amazing, seriously.

Check out this Genesis Coupe with the V6 and cat back. I know the exhaust is set up differently, but it's the same powerplant to produce the amazing soundtrack.

I measured the o.d. of the exhaust pipe on my V8 at a point between the mid-muffler (sic) and the rear muffler. It is 2.14".
I also measured the inside diameter of the exit point on the rear cats. It is 2.3"

I KNOW, I KNOW, the coupe is different from the sedan BUT I would like the sound of my seday 3.8 to be like some of the video's of the coupes. I alos some of the rev-liniter releases. I wonder how you would do that and perhaps reporgram the trans to hold the RPM's.

Any ideas?

I just wanted to revive this thread and see if anyone out there has yet to change the exhaust on their 3.8 sedan.

I have sent messages to Borla and Magnaflow to see if either they will be working on a 3.8 version or whether the existing cat-back systems they offer for the 4.6 will bolt right up.

As I'm not actually sure that I want a very loud exhaust, I may entertain the idea of just doing an axle-back setup if I can find the right mufflers and some quad-tips that I like that are either already staggered or can be modified to make staggered. Perhaps being able to purchase just the mufflers and tips used from either the Borla or Magnaflow exhausts would be an option.

I like the look of the 7ism dual mufflers and tips that are available at Korean Auto Imports (http://www.koreanautoimports.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=31_237_319&products_id=1898&osCsid=rgsfajgnwxqnh), but the cost of $595 seems high when you can get an entire Magnafow setup for like $750-$943. I also don't know how these will affect the exhaust note.

Anyone done just an axle-back mod that improved the sound of their 3.8 without being too loud?

I am trying to do the same thing to my 2013 3.8 Genny. I know magna flow doesn't have an exhaust for this year but I'm thinking of doing an axle-back mod as well to just improve the sound slightly, but ill be keeping the original exhaust tips cause i like them how they are.

I have a 2012 sedan 3.8L and I bought a 4.6L magnaflow catback exhaust and it bolted right on. Exhaust shop charged me $130 for installation and he said it was no big deal. It sounds sooo good and aggressive especially when you hit it!

I did an axle back on my 2013 3.8 sedan and it still blows me away on how good it sounds. In my personal opinion axle back muffler delete is all you need to give your 3.8 the sound it needs. As long as it's back out the back the drone isnt bad at all. Will post a video soon of sound of my 2013 genisis sedan 3.8 axle back exhaust.

I have a 2013 3.8 with a straight pipe muffler delete as well. Sounds great, but I'm considering replacing the stock resonator with a performance one as I feel that the sound becomes very raspy/airy at around 3-4k RPM. Car sounds best under load from 2-3K RPM. Any thoughts?

Here is my genisis 3.8 with muffler delete, just installed my aftermarket tips and I couldn't be more pleased with the sound

Do you have stock tips still on it or aftermarket? I think if I do anything to mine next is secondary cat and resonator delete and replacing the resonator spot with a borla muffler.
