  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Exhaust Soot on All over Bumpers and More

I still get some, but not as bad as your pics.
I tried octanes from 87-93 and noticed no difference.
I use 89 octane ethanol free. Not because it is cleaner, but it goes farther on a gallon of gas.
I saw the amount of soot decrease a good bit after i hit 2k mi or so and switched to mobil 1 synthetic oil.

In summary, I don't think that it is a gas octane level issue, I believe it is an oil issue. Almost all GDI engines seem to have this to some degree. The rental Optima I have right now has sooty exhausts.

Just wait til you drive like grandma for a week or 2, then stomp the gas! My buddy was behind me and said my car looked like a diesel with all the black soot it blew out!

I wanted a white genesis, but I saw how sooty they became after a couple of weeks. I went with the Titanium, because it stays looking cleaner longer.

Plus it is the fastest color Rspec ;)

That's right!

I wonder if you coated it with some type of silicone or Teflon type spray would help make it easier to keep clean. Obviously would have to read the can to insure it wouldn't hurt the paint first. Just a thought.

^^^ +1 Teflon boat wax seems to help a bit.. Primary for washing it off easier.

What brand Teflon do you use?

The soot is not residue from gas. Changing gas will not change the soot problem. The soot is from oil that's burned when when PCV vapors get mixed into the intake stream. Look out the rear-view mirror the next time you really stand on it and you can see the soot being blown out.

I do not get much soot. And if caused by PCV or ring blow by. I guess that is why for the time being hardly any measurable amounts of oil between changes. I am not getting blow by.
