  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Extented Warranty for Genesis

Guess I had a better dealer as I had none of these issues.

Went to look at the car. Salesman and I sat down to start negoating the price. First words out of my mouth were that they had added a lot of "extras' to the car that wouldn't necessarily want but knew they would loose money by taking them off. I told him I knew they added them on to increase their profit.

His response, marked the extras off the list and we started negoiating on the MSRP price. So I got my wings, tint, leather protector and teflon coating for free.

As for the F&I guy, he started to tell me about the extended warrenty and the GAP insurance, etc. I told him I already knew about them and asked what was the cost. We negociated on that as well. Got a bumper to bumper 10 year/100K warrenty for $700.

I've bought extended warrenties in the past. Some have more than paid for themselves, others didn't. In the end, it's all been a wash. Since I plan on keeping this car for 10 years, I thought it prudent for me to buy the warrenty for my, and my wifes, peace of mind.

Re: The lady that added charges to the sales contract. I can't believe ANYBODY would defend someone tacking on hundreds of dollars of items to a contract without my knowledge. Very unscrupulous. I would be extremely offended if somebody did that to me.

I would have told the lady that since they reopened the negotiating process, I was dropping my offer by a few hundred dollars and give them 5 minutes to accept my new, lower offer. If they didn't, I'm outta there. I don't put up with that crap.

Most car dealers lick their chops when they see an uneducated customer with bad credit because they know they can fleece them. I'm not one of those customers.

On the topic of extended warranty, I wouldn't buy one unless I planned to keep the car more than 5 years. I don't think they are a good deal for most people.

Ditto DITTO!

I also have found that aftermarket warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on. If anyone wants an extended warranty, get it from the manufacturer, not an aftermarket company.

As stated above, go to Google and see all the horror stories and excuses when you make a claim. In addition, I have a friend who is a service manager at a local dealership who said that these aftermarket warranties are very hard for a repair shop to work with, for the shop to first get authorization, then the warranty company insisting that used parts be used, then the shop getting their money.

I'm not telling you don't do it, what I'm telling you is I would not do it unless it is a manufactures warranty. Also, be very careful when buying at a car dealership. My Hyundai dealership tried to get me to buy an extended warranty (why, the car already has a great warranty) but the paperwork has the name of some warranty company (Fidelity??) other than Hyundai. I told them NO!

I know you bought you car used, but for those of you who buy new, watch for the F&I guy, as they always try to sell you something that you don't want or need, at a great profit to the dealership and himself. Some F&I guys put you under a lot of pressure to buy the extended warranty, plus other things you don't want, like Paint Sealent, or Leather Protection, etc etc etc.
When I purchased my SHO, the F&I guy did not put me under pressure, but when I purchased my MKZ, the F&I guy did not want to take NO for an answer, and even when I told him I was not buying any of it, he still went through his whole presentation. I just had to let him talk, and again said NO.

I told the sale guy "I'd rather eat worms, than talk with the F&I guy". :(

FWIW, I had Fidelity on my BMW and had no problems with them, but then only had one realtively small claim. However, with my Audi A6 I had purchased a warranty online with Warranty Direct. Turned out to be a very wise decision. Over the course of my ownership of that car they paid out in excess of $13,000 as something seemed to break on that piece of junk every 3 months. The dealer loved me because they got paid for what ever it took to fix the car! (I sold the car the day the warranty expired)

Speaking of selling-up, many eligible gals I've seen these days have repackaged their goods substantially. Push-up bras, breast and bun implants, hair coloring, waxing, long painted nails with artwork, etc. I could go on....

"New and Improved" is a proven selling strategy.

I guess that guys just get shoe lifts.

Sadly, it gets worse than shoe lifts.

All extended warranties make perfect sense, in fact, they would pay for themselves with ease, if the providers pay for what the warranties cover. In my experience, the warranties aren't honored. Fidelity seems to have more than its share of horror stories on google.

The cost of the extended warranty will exceed its average value (which will vary by owner). Otherwise, they wouldn't be sold.

I never buy them.
