  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Filthy Stuff

This is exactly why I steered my friend to a 2012 4.6 when he said he wanted white exterior. He gets no soot at all.

My '12 R-spec doesn't soot up either although the insides of both exhaust pipes are black.

I used a generous spray of WD40 and then used a paper towel to wipe off the grime, then a warm water wash with a little car shampoo, a paper towel dry and finally a light spray of WD40.. The tailpipes have kept clean for a few extra days.. But No Cure.........
;)

The soot is nicely caked onto my exhaust tips. I used the Eagle One Never-Dull and that didn't work. I need to give the 0000 steel wool a try. Otherwise, I'm taking it in for a warranty claim.

Did you try my recommendation shown above? The metal polish is awesome, order some up and try it out for yourself first.:)

A warranty claim... for dirty tailpipes? Really?

I use some of Optimum's other products as well so I just may order some up. How bad were yours? I used OPC (optimum power clean) and gave them a good scrub but it is seriously caked on.

Mine don't leave the soot behind since my engine is not GDI, but they get plenty of road grime and gunk on the outside. One disadvantage vs. the OEM tips, is mine are polished stainless, so they show dirt well.

Once you get them clean, put a couple coats of a good polymer sealant on them. I use Zaino but any one will work.
Blackfire, Meguiars #20, Opticoat, etc.

Not carnauba.

Ahh, I gotcha. I'm hoping that I can get them all shined up again. I even waxed the tips with some Poorboy's Wheel Sealant before the tips were baked with the soot, but it didn't help much.

Ah funny you mentioned PB. I was going to mention it as an option but I guess it doesn't stand up to the heat.

Why not remove them, get them sprayed black then refit

I am seriously considering this option...........

Klasse AIO or Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze would be perfect for the tips as well.

It's surprising really because I would argue that the wheels see harsher conditions than simple exhaust tips. If I can get them to polish up, I'm going to give one of the Klasse products a try.

I would like to do this, but not sure how to get the tips out of the bumper, any guesses?

I use a brillo pad cleans them up nicely and does not harm the finish of the exhaust tips.

They are screwed into the bumper. Easy removal.
