I wonder how all this will pan out in the end. Are there any protections here for people who already used the name? Are they entitled to some kind of financial compensation? What about future use of the name, has it been locked in By Hyundai?

There was a legal battle between Nissan Motors and a company called Nissan Computer, which owns nissan.com. Nissan computer was created by someone with the last name Nissan back when the cars were still sold as Datsun in the USA.

I think it would be harder for Genesis Motors to fight for this since genesis is a common word. As I understand it (I'm not a lawyer), this is why some companies that use common words in their name will change the spelling.
