  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First Hyundai...considering buy 11' Genesis Tech. Would you really recommend it?

Gents, I also am a first time Genesis owner as of two weeks ago. I researched it for over a year and obviously price was a factor. I bought a 2011 3.8 white/tan,(it's hot in Texas) with only 5400 miles. Paint meter showed never damaged and the guy I bought it from really took care of his stuff. The car was stored in an underground garage over the winter, so that's why the low miles. Be patient, the deals are out there.....I do this for a living......the 1100 miles to get it home, was a very sweet ride compared to my 2004 Infinity G35 coupe. Oh yeah, working for a major airline helps with these deals, whether we are bankrupt or not.;)

I have a 2011 4.6 that has the Tech Package. I have owned it for over a year and have 20,000 miles on it now. It is a better car than my 07 Lexus GS350 at about $12K less.

I would not think about buying any other car at this point. I like the size of this roomy car. It has been flawless with no problems whatsoever. I do not like the problems that my friends have had with their German Cars and Lexus has fallen in reliability. So my current choice is the Genesis.

I own a 2010 4.6 with Tech package and love it. Pop the Beatles "Love" DVD-Audio into the Lexicon and be amazed. And if you look for the Lexicon on another car there is only one other choice: the Rolls Royce Phantom.

The XM is okay just not as good as CD/DVD or mp3/4. I haven't had any electronic issues. The back-up camera works fine, the only thing I don't like is there's a slight delay when I put the car into reverse before the cam comes on. Not a big deal though. The car is solid! We'll built. It's not perfect but very good!

XM is XM ---- Doesn't have anything to do with the car itself. I have XM on my Lexus and it's the same on the Genesis.....It's more compressed than FM........That's just the way it is.....

Reading all these comments about DVD-audio... I think I'll try that. Does it really sound that much better?

re: OP
Go for the tech. You've got plenty of warranty left.

I offered them my car as a trade-in (2002 Acura RL)...and $21,500, for the black on black tech package Genesis. It was a really low-balled number, but that just gives me room to move up comfortably:)

I'll keep everyone posted as to whether I not they give me a deal and I buy it. I'll post pics. I'm so excited for this car! :)

If you have the Tech package definitely try DVD-Audio. (DVD-Audio discs play music only, with no picture.) DVD-Audio discs pack about twice the musical information (called "bits") on the disc than ordinary CD's and the difference is dramatic. DVD-Audio discs have a much fuller, richer, more realistic sound than ordinary CD's, and take full advantage of your Lexicon surround sound system. Go to Amazon.com and check the "DVD-A" box under music and hundreds of choices come up.

A good one to start with is the Beatles "Love" DVD-A. Another good DVD-A is the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds." Also "Gaucho" by Steely Dan, and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John. If you like classical music get Handel's "Water Music" DVD-A on the Naxos label.

For more recommendations go to the "Music for the Lexicon" thread.

Does the XM radio sound very noticeably worse than CDs and iPod? Is it unlistenable? How has your experience with the electronics been (Nav, backup cam, etc.)?

Does the Lexicon sound as incredible as I've heard?

Seems like a lot of miles for a 2011. The Lexicon really shines when you provide it with good material. Find a good dvd-audio disc with a good surround mix, otherwise it's like buying an hdtv and playing VHS tapes on it.

An audio system is limited by its source material and the better the system, the more one can hear the problems w/ poor/bad source material (like XM or mp3s).

On my home system, I can hear all the flaws on poorly recorded/produced CDs.

Dvd-Audio is the only way I'll show off the Lexicon sound system on the Genesis, it's that much better than XM or CD's. The problem with dvd-audio is many discs are now out of print. They can be hard to find and pricey on ebay used. Lucky for me I got in early and have a pretty large collection. Also a big plus for the Genesis is that you can make copies of your dvd-audio discs and they will play. Most players won't play copies due to copywrite protection on the discs. The Genesis ignores the copywrite protection and plays them anyway, a huge plus as you can backup your music and make discs with mixed artists/songs. Some dvd-audio are better than others. It depends on how the engineer has mixed them, and whether they were working with the original multitracks. For a list of dvd-audio disc ratings check out this list:
Top Rated Discs
Note that this list has dvd-audio and sacd (a competing format). The Genesis only plays dvd-audio. Any question about which one's are worthy of buying shoot me a message.

Well, I'm proud to say that a deal has been reached, and I'll be picking up the car on Thursday! :)

Before I actually drive off the lot...just a couple more questions about the overall quality of the car:

How is the paint quality? I've read reports (of Hyundai, not the Genesis specifically) that the paint shows wear earlier than Toyota/Honda/etc. Is this true? Does is scratch, fade, and chip easier than most cars? Is Genesis paint the same quality as Elantra paint?

Thanks everyone! I look forward to joining the Genesis ranks soon:)

In my opinion the paint is superior to Honda and Toyota products. It does not chip as bad as our 2004 Acura did with the same number of miles on the same roads in Georgia. The paint is every bit as good as the paint on our Mercedes. The fit and finish of the entire car is excellent and I am really picky about how stuff fits together. The Genny is more fun to drive than our Mercedes but the Mercedes does have the edge in smooth ride.

Skip to 6 min 16 seconds for just info paint quality.

Great! Which option package/interior/exterior did you bring home?

Let's see some pics.

I have the same vehicle. white on black though. I came from an Infiniti M35 Sport. I've found the quality fairly good! I haven't had any issues with the vehicle except the sound quality from the am/fm and XM radio isn't what I thought it would be. The CD and Aux in with ipod is good!

I feel the leather used is of good quality. You'll have to clean and condition it like any leather (Lexol).

as for price, it seems a slight bit high. I paid $34000 Canadian 2 months ago and the vehicle had 8000 km (5000 miles). Vehicles are often / almost always cheaper in the USA.

I've found it very good quality and I'm glad I bought it! It's a solid car.

Alex

The quality of sound that you experience from XM isn't the function of the car as much as XM itself. They are digital and stream at a very low bit rate (way below even 128 bit). That is the reason for the digital distortion. The problem is that XM is provided a certain amount of bandwidth by the FCC and that is what they have to work with; that with their need to provide hundreds of channels causes that already precious bandwidth to be divided many more times then it should be.

I personally think they need to get rid of half of their channels; for instance they have more sports channels than there are sporting events going on at a given moment and who really needs 20 rock stations and 10 rap stations and a station dedicated to Sinatra and Elvis?

All this combined is the reason why XM sound quality is so poor. With that said their "commercial" stations like KIIS get a slightly higher bandwidth so they tend to sound the best.
