  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Despite the inflammatory nature oil change politics, I want to report my experience with my first oil change. Our Genesis was a lease vehicle and had all maintenance done by the dealership with the standard conventional oil. I noted on cold start up what I would term as lifter clatter. We made it a practice to wait for a minute or so after cold start up before putting any load on the engine, generally after about 90 seconds the noise would abate.

I had the dealership change the oil with Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil, 5w-30, it was my second choice as I couldn't find the highly touted Pennzoil Ultra Platinum at wally World, nor could they order it.

I was pleased to note that now on cold start up there is almost NO lifter clatter.

Given that my driving does not fall into the category to require 3500 mile oil changes I intend to change between 6-7k, having the dealer do the oil change with my oil, their filter. Jim price Hyundai of Charlottesville, VA only charges $12 to change the oil. Of course there is the whole issue of pressure to upsell on something. Which I have no problem dealing with as I am an old gearhead having grown up in the motor city street racing on Woodward Ave.

My purpose in having the dealer change the oil is to document in their system that it was changed and that the change was done with their filter.

I would stay with the Mobil 1 EP 5W-30. It is a great motor oil.

Was the original oil recommended 5w20?

I have seen others suggest going from 5w20 to 5w30 to help with the noise problem and because of new model updates on this viscosity.

The recommendation to use 5W-20 is generally to improve gas mileage, and to help the manufacturer get the best EPA MPG rating. 5W-30 is best for engine longevity, and if using a synthetic, the gas mileage should be better than conventional oil anyway.

Another thing to consider is that Hyundai now recommends a minimum viscosity of 5W-30 for the 3.8L GDI engine starting in 2015. So I suspect that discovered that 5W-20 is a little too thin to provide adequate protection for that engine. Obviously, they cannot retroactively change the viscosity recommendation to older models, without incurring liabilities via lawsuits.

For those who live in extremely cold climates, Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE is also a good choice.

Makes sense to me. Back in my younger days I thought 20w50 was the magic motor oil for everything, especially any 4 cylinder engines... but I don't think like that anymore!

I use 5w30 in mine, and used a minimum of 5w40 in my 2.0T Coupe when I had it. Better protection, and when using full syn, not really sacrificing any fuel economy that I can notice.
Now, Hyundai did say you could use as low as 5w20 in the coupe, but that's on a stock motor, and even then I feel it's too thin to provide adequate protection on a Forced Induction motor. I was running a tune and some aftermarket parts to bump boost, so 5w40 minimum I figured would be heavy enough, especially considering it can get cold up here pretty quick, even in the summer.
The 5w30 seems to run great in this car. Smooth start ups, good power delivery, and the motor stays very quiet. I only have 6500 km so far, so time will tell, but I'd say this will be my oil weight in this car for a long time. May switch up brands though to M1, RP or AMS. Not such a fan of the dealership QS oil, simply because I don't trust the brand.
