If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a new 4.6 and I heard that I am suppose to change the oil at 3,500 miles yet in the manual, all I can find is a reference to 7,500 mile service.

Where did I miss this? Should I take it in at 3,500 miles?

Many posters have their own theories on oil change frequency, type of oil, etc. Hyundai suggests every 7500 miles under ordiinary usage. Considering Hyundai is assuming warranty obligations for 100k miles, they most likely are being prudent and leaving a margin for error in that 7500 mile interval.

My two previous cars, Jaguar XJ and Saab 9-5 called for even greater mileage between changes, every 10,000 miles.

So, in my case I am going by the book and following Hundai's maintenance schedule. No doubt you will hear other points of view.

Congrats on your new Genesis! As regards to the first oil change every dealer or individual seems to have different ideas. My dealer asked me to bring it in between 3000-5000 miles and they changed the oil for me at no cost.

I will change the oil between every 3750-5000 miles running on regular oil as some of my driving could be regarded under the 'severe driving conditions' in the manual.
My wife's sonata has synthetic oil and I change it every 5000 miles or 6 months.

Who ever told you this lied.

The book (Hyundai) says 7500 miles, so that is what you are suppose to do.

Earlier oil changes are fine. Just don't go over the 7500 mile limit if you can help it. As others on this BB have stated, they feel safer changing sooner.
In my case, I had my dealer do the First Oil Change at 1500 miles. The next one 6000 miles later at 7500 miles, and now, I always change somewhere between every 5000 and 7500 mile, depending on if I will be leaving on a trip or not, and if I trust the dealer in the area I am visiting, or not. I don't want that max limit to come while I am away from Florida, if I can help it. I trust my Orlando dealer very much. I don't trust the Roswell dealer at all, and the two Penfield (Rochester) dealers are questionable and would only use them for an emergency oil change. I would NEVER use a "Quick Lube" place. Although they are quick, they make too many mistakes and errors.

Depends on your driving habits, only you can decode this.
1st driver:
50 mile commute per day work to home mostly highway driving.
2nd Driver:
25 miles per day, stop and go city traffic with multiple stops to get groceries, pick up kids, get Starbucks,go to work.

After 5 months
Driver 1 has driver 7500 miles.
Driver 2 Has driven 3750 miles.

Who should change their oil?

Hyundai has a chart for "severe" and "normal". Severe is 3500 miles and normal (mainly highway miles) is 7500. Most working people run in stop and go traffic most of the time which is where most get this 3500 oil change. I use synthetic and go 7500 for my Genesis. My wife's Vette has a computer that tells us when to change oil and we've never gotten to that. Her car is over 2 years old and has only 8500 miles one it so we change it after a year (Mobil One which is what Corvette recommends). Think I'm going to use Royal Purple in both next.

"First oil change" - 3500 may be good to remove break-in oil that may be contaminated with original wear metal fragments. From then on- 7500 should do you under the normal driving conditions.

After 5 months
Driver 1 has driver 7500 miles.
Driver 2 Has driven 3750 miles.

Answer: The mechnic at the shop ;)

haha - good one!

Stated interval for OCI is 7,500 mi unless you are operating under severe conditions, but most people are not operating under those (think taxis, or offroad vehicles). Most dealerships will gladly change your oil twice as often because its twice the profit.

Dino oil should be fine, but most people are running synth oil which should easily last 7,500 mi.

My advice is to change the oil at 7,500 mi intervals with a new OEM filter and send off a used oil analysis to Blackstone labs to have it analyze your oil. This will let you know definitively how much life your oil has in it and if you are safe at the 7,500 mi interval or if you need to switch to the severe interval. Since you need to adhere to the warranty guidelines, you need to stick with Hyundai's recommended OCI schedule, so 7.5k mi is as high as you should go between changes.

Blackstone will ship you the oil test kit for free. Get it now and sample your oil during the change or if someone changes the oil for you, ask them to get you the required few ounces of used oil for the text kit.

I ran 5600 miles in 10 months with Mobil 1 and had a lot of metals in the oil. Blackstone indicated it was probably due to the break in cycle. The only real conclusion that I could make from the UOA is that changing your oil early and often for the first year is a good idea if you plan on keeping the car for a long time. Dino or Synthetic, doesn't make a difference.

I work at a dealer in the service dept... Hyundai says 7500 mile intervals is fine. They can void your warranty at 7501. Also keep in mind, Hyundai states that it is NORMAL to burn 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles you drive. If you calculate this, 6.87 quarts is what the the Tao 4.6L engine requires... What's going to happen you ask? Your motor is fried. Sure Hyundai will warranty it, but is this really what you want for your vehicle? Now in my opinion, you shouldn't be burning 1qt per 1,000 miles. I only see that occur in accents for whatever reason. But if this happens to your vehicle, you have to have your motor replaced with a remanufacturered motor. If I am able to sway your decision. I am going to be using Mobil1 full synthetic every 5 months or 5,000 miles. Tao motors do not have oil consumption issues so I believe this is a safe, yet affordable interval to change the oil. Take care of your car. Bottom line.

If you go thru 1 Qt. every 1000 miles then there is a real problem. This isn't 1938 when you needed to rebore, re-ring pistons every 5000 miles- this is the 21st century where no maintence of any kind should be needed (EXCEPT oil changed at 7500 min.) for 100K miles.
Loosing that much oil, Hyundai will be replacing my engine indeed or visiting my house each week with oil. Their choice.

On a personal level, I feel the exact same as you. From a dealership stand point, the only thing they are going to show up at your house with is a tow truck or a repair estimate. I will always remain to baby my car. Oil changes are cheap insurance for a long lasting vehicle. Why not spend a couple hundred more dollars in the vehicle's life to keep it running like a top? I sure will. I am no fan of motors that have been in someone else's car. All reman motors from Hyundai are motors that had an internal failure of some sort. Yes, rebuilding them can make them almost as good as new, but I would still take my well maintained motor over anyone elses.

I'll definitely do my first change at an earlier interval than I normally would, but plan on going every 5k miles with full synthetic unless I have a compelling reason to do otherwise.
