  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First V8 for sale at Carmax?

Since Carmax is the topic, any feedback on how good their offers are to BUY a used car from you? Or do they just typically give what a dealer would offer?

As mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I think they come pretty close to what a dealer offers. I usually go to Carmax first so that I know what the ballpark is when I get to the dealer. That info, and what I get from KBB, Edmunds, etc. helps when the dealer plays that wholesale number bull#$%@ they frequently use. It is just easier to trade in at the dealer when you have the opportunity and the numbers are close. Plus, if I am not mistaken, a trade reduces the taxable amount of your new car purchase. Something you don't get when you sell to Carmax or sell on your own. For the record, I am not sure if that is applicable in all states.

Does her Odyssey have those runflat tires that some of them are equipped with? If so, I can certainly understand why she would think the Genesis rides like butter!

Nope, regular tires. Although once about two years ago she drove about 30 miles on a non-run flat tire while it was flat...down I95...at highway speeds.

"The van felt a little funny today"

It was a rear tire, so the rear of the van was a little loose as she was driving, she thought it was gusty winds that were blowing her around. were it a front tire I think it would have been pretty apparent. I hope it would have been more apparent!

The tire was flat, while it looked okay on the outside, the inside of the sidewall was shredded. Thankfully there was no damage to the rim.

Carmax does make the buying and selling process easy, but they are definitely not going to give you the best price either for the car they are selling you, or for your trade in. I have gotten a quote from them in the past for cars I wound up either selling myself or trading in, and if you are able to play hardball with the dealer on your trade you can always get a better price for your trade. I also have mentioned to them several times that the price they are asking on a used car is more than what a new car with the same options would cost, but they don't seem to care because there's always someone out there who doesn't pay attention and will buy the car from them. By the way, I paid $35,900 for my 4.6 with tech, plus cargo mat, ipod cable. $38,100 out the door. My car had 64 miles on it.

That was quick. The car is no longer listed. It either has been spoken for or it has been pulled and is in transit to another location. Carmax will delist vehicles when someone requests to transfer it to another location. We'll have to see if it shows back up. This one may have been priced right. Just below what folks are paying for new ones. Maybe just low enough for someone to bite!

It's back. Car is listed again on Carmax. Same price, no pictures yet.

That is a little high for a resale with 12K miles. I saw a couple brand new 4.6 w/tech on ebay for 39K.

As of two weeks ago, my last visit to my closest dealer, (NOT my selling dealer), they still have $5000 Bump UP stickers on all their Genesis. A friend of mine, who reads this forum, tried to deal with them three weeks ago, and they won't budge from their price.
Trouble is there are a lot of "retired people" in Lake County, and all the car dealers think that retired people are loaded, so they are not reasonable. I always tell people around here that "you can't buy a car in Lake County", not because you can't buy one, but because cars cost less in Orange County.

(Well, they do give you free mud flaps, and free wheel locks though LOL <grin>)

Same thing in my area. I went in for service last week and the 4.6 on the floor has a 5K bump on it. I'm told they are still not working with people since the 4.6 with tech is still not easy to get in this area. I did notice that they had a couple of 3.8's and they had discounted prices on the wind shields.

I just looked at the ad for the 4.6 in GA on the Carmax website. Notice it listed rear seat heaters. Unless I'm missing something, mine doesn't have rear seat heaters. Does anyone else's car have rear seat heaters? I politely emailed them that I got my new car with 64 miles for $35,900 with the tech package, and that I don't think the car has rear seat heaters.

They are referring to the heater that is in the back of the center console that passengers in the back seat can have either the A/C (controlled by the driver) or heat controlled by backseat passenger

OK, I get it. But that seems a little deceptive since you would never refer to the heating vents in the front of the car as front seat heaters.

Anything to get you on the lot. Then they gotcha! Anyone that knows about the car should know better. Has Carmax responded to the email?

I never in my life thought I would defend a dealership, but e-mailing about a car you have absolutely no interest in buying just to point out the price you paid for your car? Geesh. It always chaps my hide when someone contacts me about about a private party car listing I have, insults me with a $10k-below-wholesale offer and says "that's all I'm willing to pay and I can get a new one for $15k more!" -- I never know what to say half of the time beyond "ok? go buy a new one then and stop wasting my time."

Negotiating a fair price on a vehicle you're interested in is one thing... wasting a dealer's time (afterall, they are running a business and earning a living, just like you and I - whether you agree with their practices or not) with things like that just annoys the person on the other end and makes it difficult for the rest of us. It's no wonder dealers are so difficult to deal with.

Not trying to be a jerk or spark a 16 page debate... I'm the first to call a dealer on poor or deceptive practices, but this just seems over the top... IMHO. :)

First, to moose66 I have not heard back from Carmax yet. Secondly, to LLT, I certainly was not trying to piss anyone off. It was basically a suggestion that they may have better luck selling the car if they make the price more reasonable. I seriously doubt that I have enough power over dealers to make them "so difficult to deal with" or that I'm "making it difficult for the rest of us". When car dealers want to start dealing with the public on a level playing field then I will not have any need to send them reality check emails.

I hope they get thier price. If the condition is excellent, a $37k asking price for a $42k pre-loved that is only a few month's old is not out of line. I hope they maintain high resale prices - we'll all benefit later and it helps build the brand.

Another point is - they are grown-ups. They can put ANY price they want on THEIR car. If there are no takers, then they'll start to lower it 'till they find the market. Don't like their business practices? Then don't shop there. Paying too much, but knowing it and not liking it -and doing it anyways, but then complaining about it - that I find perplexing. If an old timer wants to walk into a Lincoln dealership and is glad to pay full sticker for a hunk of junk Town Car, what business is it of mine? Is he a fool? Or does he put a value on things differently than you and me?

To the gentlemen who got a V8 tech for $35,900 - cudos to you sir - you are an extraordinary deal-maker! That is certainly not the norm as you can see from this forum. Mine was $39k, but I'm still thrilled about it and think it's worth every penny. The steep discounting is something we may all regret later at resale and may keep the brand in the "cheap" category.

Well said Windcrasher. "To each is his own".

Seems like people are taking my comments personally. I'm sorry you feel like you have to get defensive as I'm really not meaning to be offensive. This is supposed to be a place where we share trials, tribulations and joys of our new cars. Although getting a good price on my car may not be good for resale value of current owners, what about the people here who haven't bought a Genesis yet. Now they have something to shoot for. As far as Carmax charging too much for the car, I personally have bought two cars from them and shame on me because it was a regrettable experience both times, so maybe I have it out for them and that came through in my writings. Anyway, I hope we can all just get along and stop this nonsensical bickering.

Larry - I have no stake in Carmax, so I wasn't/am not offended. I did not mean to seem like I was having a go at you. We all complain about dealers (if you check my posts, you'll see I'm usually at the top of that list :)) - just wanted to point out we don't help dealer/consumer relations with such things.

Playing devil's advocate, I suppose. :)
