  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Front License Plate

Is it possible to change an existing standard mount to an upside down one? Will it leave holes on the car?

Remember…the eyes of the beholder. To me if I have to have the front plate and I do. I much prefer it where it is. Reasons why? First in that position it looks to me like it’s hanging down off the front visually too close to the ground. Second it breaks up the outline of the grille which I like very much. To each their own.

I agree.

Yes and yes!
I don't think it was answered by DrNo as to whether new holes need to be drilled. It may be that the same holes are used but only 2 holes are holding the plate-holder to the car, and the holes are now on top instead of on the bottom of the plate-holder.

He didn't ask about drilling new holes - he asked if it will leave holes and the answer to that is unconditionally a "YES". it will leave 2 holes where the top of the bracket was affixed previously when you move it down to the lower position. I know as I own the car and the bracket as installed by the dealers is secured with 4 screws.

has anybody tried the side tow license plate holders? i see alot of cars with them and the tow area seems to be pretty similar in size.

That's what I've been thinking. Has anyone tried the tow plate brackets from CPe or Grimspeed? When I purchased my Gen coupe, I asked the dealer not to drill holes if I brought my own tow plate.

This will be one of the first things I grab when I get the sedan next year.

To each his (or her) own, but off centered plates look really bad to me!

By law in most, if not all, states front license plates have to be mounted a certain distance upward from pavement. Hence, the dumb oem location on the 2015 Genesis.
In many years of driving I have found law enforcement will tag (depending on jurisdiction) for a missing front license plate, but seem to ignore the distance of the license plate mount from the pavement. I have "lowered" the front license plate on many cars with no comment or objections from law enforcement.

I got my permanent plates in the mail for the new Genesis yesterday and realized there was no place to put the front plate. I bought it at a dealership pretty far away (but in the same state). I found the bracket for the front plate by the spare tire in the trunk, but there really aren't any instructions on how to install it. Anyone have any tips? I didn't want to mess up the front end at all, but cops around here are pretty strict so I don't think I can get away without ever installing it. Thanks!!
Another option is to get a plate mounting bracket that will connect to the tow hook - it's an off center mount that I see more of these days - especially on "show" cars... about $60 online.

I lowered my plate using Dr.No's idea: flip the mount and screw in place using just two 1" screws in the lowest drilled holes in the grill.

The effect is to lower the plate about 2 inches.

Brian: This looks so much better. I will definitely be doing this. I see 2 small holes above the plate. Assuming you repositioned after dealer's original install. Those little holes are not very noticeable. To me, it's worth the trade off.

I personally LOVE the grill and don't want it split in the middle with the license plate.

I am finalizing a deal on a Gen from Mississippi (no front license plate state). I am having it shipped to Houston next week. When I couldn't find the specific white/beige 5.0 in Houston, I specifically looked for one in a NO front license plate state. It worked... :D Hopefully, I can mount the frame as easily as you did.

Texas....took off my front plate, looked like crap. if I get pulled over i'll just tell them it broke off and i'm waiting for a new one from the dealer. then i'll put it back on and pay the small fine. then take it back off. It left behind four screw holes, so I just took a black sharpie and colored them in and now you can't even hardly see them.

I drive around another car with a fake euro plate on the front....never been hassled in the last 15 years.

Just curious as I also live near Houston:
  1. Aside from potentially not getting your price point, did you have bad experiences with the Houston dealers? Just wondering who is treating folks right
  2. ...and about having it shipped from Mississippi. Man that sounds like a fun drive if one has the time; a stop in New Orleans on the way home for some good food. Technically the manual says vary your engine speed (ie no prolonged highway driving), but still it would be a nice "get acquainted with one's car" drive.

Oh and congrats!!
