  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Purchased new, the instructions on the cap say to tighten to "One Click" which worked for about 9 years. The I just tightened it until I thought it was secure enough to keep from having a "Check Engine Light" which worked up to the present. Fueled up today after 2.5 years of the same method of securing the fuel filler cap and it now just spins, both ways. No tightening or coming loose to the next fuel stop.
After you stop laughing, has anyone else experienced this issue? My thoughts are to "mechanically remove" the filler cap and replace with a new one.

When you say "spins both ways" you mean you can't take it off? Well, you have a couple hundred miles to come up with a solution. Could be a fun project.

That's exactly what I meant...spins both ways. I have about 425 miles to figure this one out.

I don't know how they are constructed but I wonder if a squeeze with vice grips would help, or prying it up. Not a lot of room to get a tool in there. Perhaps someone that know will speak up. If not, get a cap from a junk yard and figure out how to destroy it.

I suspect that you will have to pry off the part that spins, and then grab the remaining part with pliers and unscrew it.

I have been mulling this over since yesterday, trying to figure that part out. Don't need any explosions but with the tank full, shouldn't be much vapor. It was 96F yesterday when I filled it up after dropping a couple of our grandchildren off after a few days at the ocean and I didn't feel like troubleshooting. I also noticed that someone had sideswiped my right front fender. I might be able to buff some of it out.

Thank you. I wasn't sure if there was a way to get something underneath to pry against and unscrew the cap but figured it was internal. My first thought was post this on the Forum, someone will know.

Dont you push down on the cap to engage the unscrewing mechanism? Otherwise, swing by dealership (genesis or hyundai) for help.

Give it a squeeze with some channel-locks. Might bind it up enough to get it off. I recommend you have the new replacement cap available when you do

I've been waiting for your reply. I messed with it today by pressing and pulling while trying to remove and nothing. From what I can see the fuel neck is moving. New cap with lanyard will be here Saturday. I still have about 390 miles of driving to work this out. The pictures show me the white part seals the tank filler neck, not quite sure how the filler cap relates. Will advise over the next few days. Might have to head to the hangar where most of my tools, air driven are to get this sorted. The dealership where I bought the car is less than a half mile away.

Well, once again YouTube to the rescue. This method also works for locking gas caps with no or broken key. Drill a small hole and then tighten a wood screw in until you hear the "click". Gas cap came right off. Installed replacement from Amazon that is exactly like the OEM cap by part number for half the price. Tightened to "one click" like it should. Test drove with no issues. Gas cap.webp

Nicely done!
