Good afternoon everyone.

This is my first time posting anything on this forum and I’m just looking for some advice or suggestions on what to do with my current dilemma.

A little more than 5 months ago, I leased a BRAND NEW 2021 Genesis G70. Early this month I broke down on the side of the highway after the car was doing some really weird things, to which a road ranger pulled up behind me and as soon as he walked up to the passenger side door, he immediately told me to cut the car off cause he smelled raw fuel. That being said I had to get the car towed to my Genesis dealership and service center to which they told me that that fuel injector needed to be replaced.

Is this common on a brand new car??? Has anyone experienced this before??? The service center still has my car. It’s been 3 weeks now and it’s still not fixed. Now they’re waiting on a turbo to be replaced. It just seems like it’s one thing after another and quite honestly I’m scared to even take the car back.

So again, just looking for some advice or suggestions on what I should do next. Should I take the car back to where I got it and request to trade it in for something else? I appreciate any and all tips!

No, not common at all and certainly frustrating when it happens to you. Making things worse now is getting parts.
Over the years I've heard many stories of car having serious problems in the first days of ownership from the cheapest to the most expensive brands.

There are lemon laws for repeat problems but I don't think this qualifies. You can always ask about swapping it but again, it is probably up to the dealer, not a requirement at this point. I hope you get it back soon and it lasts for many years, as it should.

I'm always amazed when people have a single problem and think trading the car in is the solution. What makes you so sure the replacement vehicle will be trouble free.

We're light on details here but we'll take at face value that the injector failed. Pretty much zero change Hyundai/Genesis makes the fuel injector. Somebody like Bosch probably makes it like they make for many other OEMs. They make many millions of injectors every year (at least four per car). Once in a while a bad one is made.

I had a spark plug coil (coil over plug) fail on my F-150. Do the math...Ford makes 1 million trucks a year. Each truck has 6 or 8 coil packs. That's 6-8 million the manufacturer (not Ford) makes every year for just that one model. They don't all come off the assembly line perfect.

To be clear it sucks it left you stranded on the road but such a failure can happen in any car. If it continues to happen that's when you get pissed and start evaluating options.

nobody cares that you're lease is BRAND NEW. all leases are for new cars.

Anyway, hopefully they can get the part(s) you need as these days that's the biggest concern.

We've been spoiled. The typical car can easily have 30,000 individual parts. That is a lot of stuff to come together perfectly. I've never seen a manufacturing company that never made a bad part, though most don't get out the door. In the five Hyundai/Genesis cars I've owned they had a total of three warranty issues, rather minor. Years ago, you got your new Chevy or Dodge and a week later took it back with a list of a dozen or more things to be fixed. A month later you took it back wit a list of what was not fixed plus new items.

NEW Car - NEW means Never Ever Worked.

If it's been there for three weeks already, and you're still waiting on parts with no ETA, I'd suggest to start researching the lemon laws for your state.

To the OP, first of all, this is the first I've heard of this on this forum since I joined. It's possible that I might have missed a post; I go through engagement/disengagement phases based on what's going on with my life, but I don't believe it's common.

Getting parts in is a huge deal right now; there are ~60 ships sitting off the coast of California right now, waiting to get unloaded. I know that doesn't help with your (understandable) frustration. The thing I'm confused by is why a bad fuel-injector would impact your turbocharger? I'd get a really, really detailed explanation on that, possibly with a mechanic friend present if possible.

And as BadTrainDriver suggested, start looking into the lemon-laws for your state, based on your car being unavailable to you. If for nothing else, it's best to know your options.

could have been dumping fuel and unburned fuel can tear up a turbo pretty quick.

As for injectors failing on a new car, it happens. Ask BMW how many revisions they had to go through before they had injectors that didnt fail on their N54 engines.

I bought my 2021 G70 brand new in September and have drove it maybe a total of 2 months. It has broken down on me 3 times now. With the 3rd time being tonight, same exact issue. I just got the car back 5 days ago after the dealership had it this last time for 8 weeks fixing the fuel injector, fuel pump (for the second time). I am at loss. Am I the only other person having this issue??

Sorry to hear and not at all normal or even remotely common. It sounds like the diagnosis was injectors and pump but they got it wrong.

What is the car actually doing? Does it just stop driving? Run rough? If you can describe the symptoms, maybe we can help figure it out.

It starts stalling, barely going, and tons of white smoke comes out of exhaust.

For the 3.3 engine we have (6) fuel injectors and a high pressure fuel pump. Did the dealer replace all injectors plus the high pressure fuel pump? Seems odd any of that went out unless some really bad gas or something went thru it causing damage? I think we also may have a tank mounted low pressure fuel pump that keeps the fuel line between the tank and high pressure pump fully pressurized. For a 2021 car with these issues is just strange.

supply chain for parts is what it is right now. tough for shops to complete repairs if they can't get the parts. it sucks. i get it. i've had my G70 sitting in the body shop for 4 weeks waiting for parts for a repair that should take a day's labour. sure i'm annoyed, but that's the deal these days. i've had a loaner car for the duration, so if that was unavailable to the OP then i get the increased frustration.

as for the injector failure, that sounds isolated and is far from a common issue. just bad luck on a part supplied by OE suppliers. presumably HKG tracks KPI's of suppliers and if this becomes a trend they will likely change their supply contract procurement.

My 2019 G70 just went into the dealer on Wednesday, they said it needs a new fuel pump. Hopefully, it won't take too long for the part to arrive. 36,000 miles & very disconcerting!!

Same thing here. Car ahs 32,000 miles and has now been in 3 times for various check engine issues. Fuel injector is the latest issues and they have now had my car 9 weeks. No end in sight as to when parts will be available. Lemon law now applies, so going for it. Done with Genesis

Hello, this also happened to me. I have a 2021 G70, with less than 23k miles. I just had an oil change 11 days prior. Car cut off several times, burned 3/4 tank of gas within 40 miles. Called service center, spoke to manager, got car towed to dealer and picked up the loaner. They've had my car a week & hoping to get it back tomorrow. This covered by warranty too. Was told they had a bad batch of injectors on the factory line.

You guys know the G70 comes with 2.0T and 3.3T engines, right? So please state which engine you're talking about. For what it's worth, lots of direct-injector issues on the new SmartStream Santa Fe engines (which have dual injection), both the 2.5 and 2.5T (the latter used on base GV70s and G80s). Maybe all Hyundai vehicles use the same injectors, or just the 4-cyl ones, so that's why I'm curious which engines are having issues. The real problem is Hyundai is taking weeks and weeks to get them, which makes no sense. Some folks have been waiting for injectors for 3 months. Crazy.
