  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sorry my first post has to be a rant, but I need to vent after a long, fruitless day.

We drove down to Houston last night to visit the in-laws, and look at a specific Genesis. It was just the one I was looking for, the right color with the tech package. The wife had called and haggled with them so we knew where we were financially beforehand. She absolutely hates car shopping, and I hate sales people, so in her mind she was helping wrap this up sooner than later. Car is suppose to be clean, one owner with 30k miles. It was not clean. There was a hole in the bumper where someone had backed it into something a mere inch from the parking sensor! Couple other paint imperfections, but hey this is a 30k vehicle. All this I was ready to accept as the price was right. Long story short, no AA/Carplay update, and they claimed they needed to buy a $400 USB stick, after I buy the car, and then bring it back so they can plug it in. I told the kid that I am standing in a Hyundai dealership that just 3 years ago had to have updated a Genesis or two. He was completely clueless. I told him it would be $140 for the third party update, and before I could ask that off the price, he said he couldn't guarantee it would work! Well I am done here.

Next was my backup plan. About an hour north was a silver tech package, with even lower miles. Called them up, sure enough it has the SW update. Guy stated it was super clean. It smelled. Rear bumper didn't line up very well, and looked to be a poor color match. Same with the rear passenger door. Silver is really hard to match, at least to me. So already feeling less than enthusiastic, we sat down at the table. He's like what do you want me to ask the manager? I gave him a price $1900 under asking price. He seems fine with that. Comes back with well we just dropped it, so all we can do is asking. Know from what I have looked at, this asking was low. I soon find out why.... I look at the numbers, and ask why price +TTL is $4000 over asking price? Oh, we install a lojack on each car because people steal our cars. That's $1700 extra! HAHA... No. Laughed and left.

It's been so long since I bought a used car, especially when I want a specific package. My local dealer seems to have their shit together, the market just isn't nearly Houston's size. Guess I will just have to keep looking locally, and keep the Taco running for a bit longer. These "we deliver to you" places just don't feel like they are made for us. There is only so much you can gather from pictures. As I have painfully illustrated. I also need to figure out if holding out for a tech package car is worth it. I really like the idea of the radar cruise, and aesthetically, I think the upgraded gauge cluster screen just looks better. Even if it doesn't add anything. Am I wrong in thinking it shouldn't be that much of a premium over the signature package? On the used market that is.

The beer is helping.... :)

Car buying, especially used, has to be one of the worst experiences a person can have.

We all have different priorities and wants and need. I think if you are buying a Genesis you should have the goodies. The Tech package will give you most of them. If you want AA or CP that is your only choice, otherwise go for the Ultra. I'd rather buy a fully loaded Sonata Limited over a base Genny. But that's just me.

I think when new, the Tech package was about $4k. I don't know how much of that will hold with depreciation but you can run a couple of scenarios with KBB to get an idea.

There should be cars coming off lease so hopefully, the one you want will show up. Good Luck.

Had ours for 3+ years, so haven't been shopping around. Your post got me looking just out of curiosity. Surprised how many signature cars are out there, but finding no tech or ultimate cars. It was a pain looking for ours as well. Live near Austin, and made drives to Houston, Killeen, Odessa, and finally Dallas ( where we finally got ours ). When I spoke with the sales people at places that were a long drive away, I'd ask them to take pics of what they thought were the 3 worst blems on the car & text them too me. Let them know if I found those problem acceptable, but found anything worse, they would be wasting both our times, and there would be no sale. Everyone was pretty good about that. Buying used, you'll be making some compromises, but don't bend too much. You won't be happy.

I live near Austin as well, so hello neighbor. I see the occasional G80 on the daily 183 battle. The market is pretty slim on tech package cars right now. There's probably a handful in the state of Texas for sale. I'll try to get more evidence before I venture up to Dallas.

I'm in Dallas. If you need someone to swing by and look a car over, message me. Genesis of Irving (Freeman Hyundai) is whom I use for service. I also know their sales staff. They aren't sleazy like a few others around DFW. They also receive a LARGE number of corporately driven cars (Hyundai has a regional office here and Freeman gets first dibs).

Was in a similar situation as you...don't like buying used. I had a broker do all of the heavy lifting. The car I ended up with had a few blemishes (rim rash, slightly torn trunk gasket caused by putting golf clubs in the trunk repeatedly and a scraped up under frame from putting a jack in the wrong spot).

2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Grapevine TX 29886159

This car is at another Freeman dealer in Grapevine. Not sure if it is what you are looking for. If it is, I imagine they could transfer the car to the Irving location. Not sure if they'd certify it, but if they would (for a fee) you'd keep the remainder of the 10 year/100,000 mile Powertrain warranty...

Good to know. I will keep that in mind.

I'm in Houston too... I had been looking for a while before I found what I was looking for. There's lots of 3.8's here, only a few 5.0's. Most are overpriced. Deals seem to get better as one heads north.

Ended up finding a 2017 Premium for a little bit more than what people were asking for the 16. Only has 10k miles too.

Joe.
When can we expect pics of the new ride? ( congrats ).
