Sorry my first post has to be a rant, but I need to vent after a long, fruitless day.
We drove down to Houston last night to visit the in-laws, and look at a specific Genesis. It was just the one I was looking for, the right color with the tech package. The wife had called and haggled with them so we knew where we were financially beforehand. She absolutely hates car shopping, and I hate sales people, so in her mind she was helping wrap this up sooner than later. Car is suppose to be clean, one owner with 30k miles. It was not clean. There was a hole in the bumper where someone had backed it into something a mere inch from the parking sensor! Couple other paint imperfections, but hey this is a 30k vehicle. All this I was ready to accept as the price was right. Long story short, no AA/Carplay update, and they claimed they needed to buy a $400 USB stick, after I buy the car, and then bring it back so they can plug it in. I told the kid that I am standing in a Hyundai dealership that just 3 years ago had to have updated a Genesis or two. He was completely clueless. I told him it would be $140 for the third party update, and before I could ask that off the price, he said he couldn't guarantee it would work! Well I am done here.
Next was my backup plan. About an hour north was a silver tech package, with even lower miles. Called them up, sure enough it has the SW update. Guy stated it was super clean. It smelled. Rear bumper didn't line up very well, and looked to be a poor color match. Same with the rear passenger door. Silver is really hard to match, at least to me. So already feeling less than enthusiastic, we sat down at the table. He's like what do you want me to ask the manager? I gave him a price $1900 under asking price. He seems fine with that. Comes back with well we just dropped it, so all we can do is asking. Know from what I have looked at, this asking was low. I soon find out why.... I look at the numbers, and ask why price +TTL is $4000 over asking price? Oh, we install a lojack on each car because people steal our cars. That's $1700 extra! HAHA... No. Laughed and left.
It's been so long since I bought a used car, especially when I want a specific package. My local dealer seems to have their shit together, the market just isn't nearly Houston's size. Guess I will just have to keep looking locally, and keep the Taco running for a bit longer. These "we deliver to you" places just don't feel like they are made for us. There is only so much you can gather from pictures. As I have painfully illustrated. I also need to figure out if holding out for a tech package car is worth it. I really like the idea of the radar cruise, and aesthetically, I think the upgraded gauge cluster screen just looks better. Even if it doesn't add anything. Am I wrong in thinking it shouldn't be that much of a premium over the signature package? On the used market that is.
The beer is helping....
