  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G70 aftermarket brake pads

Didn't realise so many of you were in the Markham area.

Yea I think it's kind of a hotspot for Genesis, that's why they're building the standalone Genesis showroom in the DVN area.

I work in the area, and occasionally see a g70 or two.

Hey all, jumping in here, really confused to what I should do. My brakes and rotors need to be replaced. Dealership wants $2500 plus HST, I have a mechanic buddy who will do them for me at no charge, just need to get parts.

From the dealership, I am being quoted:
Rotors front $190 each, Rotors rear $179 each
Pads front $838, rear pads $452
plus HST, he did say he can knock off 10% tho
still comes out to about $2062 including everything...

Although they have stock.

reading through threads here, I am seeing that aftermarket parts are MUCH cheaper, but I don't know what to get. I'm not tracking, and it's the family car. I like to drive a bit aggressive at times, but basically the current pads served me great.

As an aside, reading through this thread, I did have the vibration issue during braking, which I didn't realize was a common issue. Dealership replaced them under warranty and vibration went away...

My car is basically grounded, I have only about 1-2 mm left of pad on each tire, and my buddy is saying I really shouldn't be driving it.

Any advice on what parts to get?

$838 for front pads? HOLY CRAP!!!
Well, gotta pay for that "free" healthcare somehow!!!

Those rotor prices don't seem terrible for OEM. The pad prices are out of this world. I've never heard of pad pricing being anywhere near that high. $83 yes, $838 no way. Something doesn't add up there.

With 1-2mm remaining I would drive the car but I would take it easy on the brakes and certainly be planning to replace soon.

Seriously though...KNS Brakes, I just priced front and rear pads and rotors. Hawk HPS 5.0 pads, and DBA T3 4000 rotors. Shipped to my door was $1,075. I'll get the parts, you make the six hour drive, I'll install them for a beer or two(after work is done), and save you $1,400!

^ +3.

MM - go aftermarket. you can get equivalent or better quality for far, far less money. the dealer you are working with is gouging you, or their supplier is gouging them. regardless, the OE parts are made by a supplier, not by Hyundai. and you can buy those equivalent or better parts from OE suppliers either directly or from a middleman like rockauto.com.

Thanks for the offer...

I'm good for the install, just need to figure out the parts. So these parts that you recommend will fit guaranteed?

Was speaking to partsource, and he was like because you have Brembo, understand that not all brembos are the same, something about the number of pistons, and so if I go aftermarket I need to make sure they are the correct size and will fit?

Kinda over my head, but I'm hoping you all can confirm.

TIA

^ lol. partsource is correct, i guess, but this is basic stuff when ordering parts. of course you always want to order the correct parts. this is easy enough to verify during the ordering process, and you can simply do some cross-referencing to ensure the parts will fit. most sites are bang on as long as you enter the correct vehicle data. before submitting order, a quick double check against known part #'s (i.e. OE # cross reference or confirming on the part suppliers catalogue) will do the trick.

it's a very small amount of legwork to assure you the parts are correct. standard practice when ordering from anywhere besides the dealer.

Your dealer is smokin' crack with those pad prices. Total BS. It would be interesting to get a quote from another dealer.

So searching those part numbers the dealer actually isn't that far off. There's definitely a premium the dealer is charging but even from other sources the front pads are in the 600 dollar range.

This is kind of interesting. It may help explain why Genesis refuses to replace the pads and just does the rotors. That's essentially the cheaper option out of the two.

For those in canada, just got off the phone with Rob from UniqPerformance. He said these and these are perfect replacements for the OEM pads. He said they sell a tonne of those for the stinger and as long as the brake setup is the same they will work. They sell so much for the same reason (brake shudder) and he hasn't had a single person say the shudder came back after the switch.

Centric and Stoptech are the same company and that's usually the pair he sells.

^ great info. centric/stoptech are excellent products that, depending on product line, exceed OEM parts. those "sport" pads (which used to be their street performance pads) are really good. they may even be a non-ceramic compound which will help to eliminate the "warped rotor" issue. if MM wants an OE-equivalent pad then the posi-quiet is perfect. both prices far undercut the Genesis dealer prices.

MM - another option is to contact a Kia dealer and ask for stinger pads for the brembo setup. Bhavie makes a great point about the braking systems being the same between the two (except for the G70 3.3T Dynamic (US only) and the 6MT trim (CDN and US) which came with different pads).

that said, i'd happily go with the Centric/Stoptech products over the dealer parts. Centric Premium Disc rotors are a perfect part to pair with their pads. and way less money than Genesis parts. the part # for the front rotor is 120.50042:

Spoke w/ Rob, he's got the pads in stock but 10 days for the rotors. In case I didn't mention it, I have the 3.3T Sport w/ Brembo, which I understand is the same as the Stinger GT

So I wonder if I can get away w/ dealership rotors and pads from Rob?

You could. Are you sure the rotors need to be replaced though?

Rotors usually last twice as long as pads. 80k vs 40k.

How many kms are you at? It's possible the dealer just recommends replacing both but it's not always necessary.

And again, 1-2mm should last you atleast 10 days for the rotors to come in. Don't stress too much about that. What's the price difference between the rotors from Rob and from the dealer? And what company are the rotors that Rob recommends?

It's likely they are cheaper and better quality...

^ agreed. 2 options for rotors:

1. if current rotors are above min thickness, have them resurfaced and re-use for new pads
2. if rotors need to be replaced, or if MM would rather go this route, check pricing and materials between 'Rob' and the dealer and make the call. my guess is the Centric Premium rotors will be less, and if it were me i'd go for those since they are excellent

I would do the same, no need to rush with 2mm left on the pads as you say MM. Just wait for them to come in.

So after some more digging around: Both those pads are made by centric, but they are different lines. Stoptech is meant for sports cars, and the posi-quiet are dubbed 'ultra premium' pads. That would explain why the rear pads (posi-quiet) cost more than the front.

Is anyone able to figure out, or provide a good resource, to determine the part numbers for these pads? Stoptech starts with 309 and posi-quiet with 105.

The front Stoptech pads are 309.10010. What would the part number be for the equivalent rear pads?

Reason I ask is because the front Stoptech pads are available on amazon with free shipping. But I can't find the rear posi-quiet ones. I have a suspicion that amazon probably carries the rear stoptech pads aswell.

As much as I'd like to support Rob, getting them from Amazon for free, without tax, quicker delivery, and no hassle returns is hard not to do.

+1 for centric pads and rotors. Got mine from Rockauto.

the stoptech link is glitchy. i'd just contact them to discuss part #'s, they'll know best:
