  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Now that we are, hopefully, closer to the launch there is starting to appear some G70 reviews in magazines and print media. I’d like us to share some of these. Disclaimer: any postings are not intended to violate or infringe any copyrights, rather the intention is to share portions of information from publications using their content fairly to stimulate discussion and education about the Genesis G70.

So we don't infringe on copyright, we can just mention magazines that are released with G70 information. Maybe we could mention if the G70 article is just listing specs (like Ed's attachment) or a full-on review. And if there are online versions of those same articles, then we can also link them here instead.

Considering those would be soon freely available on Car and Driver website, I think it is ok. Also, it may prompt people to buy a copy, or if they are like me, they already subscribe to the paper version that is yet to show up.

Here are all the 4 pages with text:

It's a shame about the acceleration numbers; the engine definitely has the capability to outdo almost everything in its class, but Genesis chose to tune it very conservatively. I'm not sure why the base price in the chart is set to $55,000 for the Dynamic Edition when the text says they estimate the Dynamic Edition at $50,000. If the Dynamic Edition is indeed $50,000, that would be amazing in terms of reducing the price of every other trim. But I doubt that's the case, and $55,000 may actually be more accurate.

What I find amazing is the comfort evaluation C&D gives the G70. They say the suspension is taut with body roll yet still absorbs bumps very well even on this sportier-tuned Dynamic Edition. This is the same as when Alex on Autos said suspension is sporty yet still gave the smoothness of the ride an A+, which would be the same as the comfort-oriented Stinger and air suspensioned Mercedes C-class. Honestly, I thought Alex may have gotten some bias for this standard, sport-tuned suspension to ride as well as an air suspension, but with C&D's evaluation I guess Genesis just hit a miracle.

Also on the comfort side, C&D says the G70 has 65 dB of noise at 70 mph, which is insane if you look at their other measurements for competitors. A majority of the competition (Lexus, Mercedes, BMW...) gets 69 dB, the Stinger gets 71 dB, and the Audi A4 was class-leading in noise at the time at 67 dB. The G70 is lower than those by a proportionally significant amount, and dB is a logarithmic unit so it's even better than it seems.

Thank you for the post! That is my situation as well. In fact, awaiting the G70 actually prompted me to subscribe to both C&D and R&T.

I’m wondering whether the tweaks were they did for this special edition unintentionally knocked a few tenths off the acceleration numbers. I have no technical l knowledge of that kind of thing, so maybe someone else can weigh in there.

It is good to remember this is intended first as a small luxury sedan that is comfortable for daily driving and secondarily as a “sports” car. Personally, I’m willing to sacrifice a few tenths of a second in “off the line” 0-60 time as long as I get no turbo lag and can easily overtake the going-under-the-speed-limit car in the fast lane, when necessary.

I'll repeat what I said in another thread: more tests will tell the tale. In back-to-back testing, my impression and that of almost all the media I've spoken to is that the G70 will run door-to-door, if not ahead of, anything else in the class.

Theory regarding the C&D test numbers: I could see the stickier Pilot Sport 4S on the Dynamic Edition potentially harming acceleration from a dead stop. The car has prodigious grip even with the standard PS4, meaning it's prone to bogging down off the line (especially the AWD car, which generates zero wheelspin due to a 50/50 torque split at launch). Without the ability to generate some wheelspin to help bring up engine speed and thus spool the turbos, it's difficult to generate the best acceleration numbers. I had much more success launching the car when it was 15C outside than I do when it's 30C like right now.

The stickier 4S would only make this worse - I just fitted a set to my car and will confirm once I've broken them in a bit. The bottom line? I challenge anyone doubting the power to drive one. Seat-of-the-pants, it feels fast as hell. Certainly faster than a 340i or Infiniti Q50 RS400, and dead even to the C43 AMG I tested this weekend.

Remember also that turbos enjoy cooler compressed air.

^ Yeah, wouldn't be so concerned about the 0-60 times until other publications/testers start showing the same thing.

Have to keep in mind whether C&D tested the G70 at a higher elevation (which saps power) and SoCal has been really hot this summer - which also saps power.

I completely agree that we'll need multiple tests from a variety of sources testing under a variety of conditions (e.g., altitudes, temperatures, drivers) before we can zero in on values with some confidence.

Generally, I think manufacturers report optimistic numbers. I don't know if Hyundai follows or bucks that trend. But I wouldn't be surprised if they tended toward reporting one of the better times they got on a series of tests. I consider 0-60 a benchmark. The precise value isn't critical and the G70 clearly is quick and fun. But when a lot of data are available, I think 0-60 does provide a guideline for comparison to similar cars. Small differences, say 0.1 seconds, are well within the margin of error under real world conditions. But the larger the difference gets, averaged across multiple professional tests, the more credible it becomes and the more indicative it's likely to be of how the car performs out on the road. We're not there yet, one way or the other, until we have more data.

what we also need is instrumented back-to-back testing typically done with a group comparo review. as in, a group of 4-5 cars all tested on the same day at the same track and driven on the same roads as part of a 'who's best' comparison. this is what i'm most eager to see.

i have to think C&D will do this with the 2019 3 series & the '19 G70 (as the new/improved entrants) up against the carry-over A4, Giulia and MB C-class. if the Q50 has been beaten too many times it will be ignored, no changes to impact its ranking.

hopefully they will option all the cars appropriately so they are price-comparable. this should certainly give the G70 an edge in terms of value. i hate it when some of the cars show up to these comparos loaded with goodies that could impact results but take the car into a different price range.

I think that would make for a very interesting comparo.

Maybe with both the 4 and 6 powered versions for all of the models.

Of note, the C-class is also getting a mid-cycle refresh for 2019.

Ok. Only question I have now is how much will a tune affect these numbers..? Is there a general rule of thumb?

mang.

wtf my Sept 2018 print issue MT doesn't have that?

My copy of C&D arrived today. Kudos to Canada Post for not mangling this one like they do on a semi-regular basis.

Here is Road & Track's test of the Dynamic Edition, seems slower than Car and Driver or just uncorrected numbers
