If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G70 US Availability?

If you look at obscure articles about the dealer network you will see that Genesis has to franchise each dealer with each state's licensing board. Already Florida has rejected their application as they do not see Genesis as a separate car company, but just some high end cars from Hyundai. So, they think all Hyundai dealers should be able to sell Genesis cars. It is a mess. Same issues with Texas. The state licensing boards are created to protect the dealers from manufacturers that want to sell certain models through other than regular channels. Some dealers have even issued law suits against Genesis for what they call "unfair practices". That is why it is taking so long. I expect we will not see any 2019 Genesis cars: G70, G80, or G90 until this is settled - probably November or later!!! OR even next year sometime!!!
How is Genesis different from Lexus or Infiniti or Acura in that regard? They're all of them just car companies selling higher-end models when it comes down to it.

And I have to wonder how it would be any different if Hyundai were just opening new dealerships under the Hyundai name?

Someone doesn't want the competition, and they have influence with the state ...

I posted before the long weekend about contacting senior Genesis staff, etc. I did not end up buying anything this weekend...no killer deals that crossed my path.

So I continue to wait...but barely.

Also...I actually got a call from a fellow named Walter Dawson. He is the Senior Manager for Regional Genesis Operations (Southern region which includes VA). Believe it or not...he got my info from a message that I left for Erwin Raphael.

Anyhoo...I was not around...so I will be contacting Mr. Dawson today. Hopefully he spills the beans and I will have more info...at least for my area, etc.
Hey folks...I'm back. Solid news from Mr. Dawson. I believe him.

Licensing almost all done in all the States. After that is done...Genesis then gets the legal paperwork done on which dealers commit to B&M dealers, etc, etc. Several dealers are also almost done...including all of VA almost done.

VA will start wholesaling and public sale...mid to late October...so they will miss the summer deadline...by ~1 month.
GA will be quicker than VA, NC after VA, SC same as VA.

Cars just now getting to the ports...they have NOT been there for months.

Pricing will come out in the next week or two...along with the Online Configurator going live. Note...ALL pricing will be released including the 2019 G80 and G90. So...with our estimates going up against the 2018 G80...we may be off. 2019's might be more expensive, etc.

USA will have different aesthetic configurations than Canada. Siberian Ice Sport gets the gray stitching...as well as red !!!! F'ing YES.

The 2 special editions will NOT have any performance advantages over the regular Sport...just aesthetics.

That is all I have. I did ask about specific pricing...he says that he doesn't know. I kinda believed him...probably such a huge secret, etc.

That's all I got for now. To be quite honest...I probably won't even call them anymore....we are so close.

That is some effort you put in, kudos! So is it set that only the sport models get siberian ice like in Canada? That would be a shame that you can't get the 10 spokes with this color which would be my choice. Either way, can't wait to spend hours on the online configurator, finally something to anticipate.

Even worse...Siberian Ice will be 3% of the available cars...so most likely special order :(

Great detective work here Beefer! I assume when you say "all states", you're including CA? Was there any mention of CA licensing or dealerships in your conversation? thanx!

I did not get specifically into any States other than VA, NC, SC and GA (where he is). Sorry about that. But...he said that out of 50 States...only 10 were left finalizing licensing. After that...specific dealers need to get picked out...legal doco's signed...get their tax permits...then they can sell.

He did specifically say that if a State was ready to sell...they will sell. No State will hold up any other. To add to that...if a dealer is ready to go before another dealer within the same State...they will be ready to go.

So...there is one dealer in VA (keeping it to myself...sorry)...that will be the first dealer in the USA to get cars. I'm #1 on their list...LOL.

Appreciate the info @Beefer! This is good news. Glad pricing will come out soon.

If the 2019 G80 does increase in price, that would be a damn shame. There's basically no difference between that and the G80 Sport, right?

And what he said about the special editions contradicts the news release and what some press like Car and Driver have been told. The Dynamic Edition should have PS4S tires and have a suspension that's a few percent stiffer than the sport tuned suspensions. I'm not saying he's wrong but rather that piece of information is probably up in the air and we will have to wait for the info to be verified.

Ya know, being the 1st guy in the US to get a G70 may cost you! Do you expect to pay MSRP or are you ok with some dealer mark up for the privilege of being first? It's gonna be interesting to see which dealers play fair and which ones play for profit!

Not paying mark up...and I want certain colors...so I’ll probably end up passing on it. We’ll see.

Yeah...I don’t call that major performance stuff. Also G80 and G80 Sport...huge difference...completely different engines. G80 Sport has the 3.3T.

Although we here on this site are tuned into Genesis and appreciate that the G70 is a great car, the general public, and even people who do pay some attention to luxury performance cars are not likely to be busting down the doors like a Walmart on Black Friday.

I live not too far from Kia’s US headquarters in Calfornia and I’ve only ever seen 4 Stingers on the road. The major thoroughfares in my area are filled with BMWs, Audis and Mercedeses (not sure that’s a correct plural...) and their owners are not going to ditch them overnight.

Their loss...drives cost down for us.

Reading this forum, reminds me that some (NOT ALL) members are like the little kids who are told that "they can't have it", then they want it all the more, then again, told they can't have ig. This goes on and on until the item is finally purchased. They want it so bad that they buy it no matter what. Then they often find that it is not all they thought it would be.

BTW. I been there, done that. I speak from experience, not hear say.

What I'm really saying is;

Be careful what you wish for.
You may get it.

I’ve driven it...I know EXACTLY what I’m getting. You being here seems to show you want some candy as well

Excellent advice. Definitely planning on test drive of both the 2.0T and 3.3T. I’ll also try out a G80 when the 2019s for that arrive, as well. As owner of 3 Hyundais (2011 x 2, 2017) I do have a positive bias in favor of a Hyundai product.

However, before the purchase of a 2017 Tucson to replace a 2011 damaged in accident, I looked at and drove Honda, Subaru, Mazda, Totota, Nissan, looked at a few others, and then decided the Tucson was the best medium SUV.

Between my wife and I have had three Sonatas, one Kona and two Genesis so I know for first hand how good these cars are. I've been following the G70 since the first day it came out in Korea and since that time I was sure that the G70 will be my next car. My 2016 Genesis 3.8 became too big for my family when my son went to College. My lease ends April 2019 so I still have some time to see what happens with all this dealer/Genesis USA issue.

This is excellent news! Thanks for the updates and details, Beefer. I'm looking forward to getting pricing info sooner than anticipated!

Text of article (my highlighting)

Genesis has been around as a standalone brand for a few years now, and it's just about to launch its third car: the impressive G70 sedan, which we first drove back in September 2017 and again last month. The sales process has been unclear, though, and the upstart luxury automaker is hoping to change that.

Erwin Raphael, general manager for Genesis, sat down to chat with us and the rest of the media in Detroit about the brand. He cleared up the dealership strategy for the near future and even left us with some intriguing news related to the Essentia Concept.

At the beginning of the year, Genesis announced it was going to ditch its Hyundai dealership digs for Genesis-specific dealers. That proved unfeasible not long after, and the brand switched to a strategy of selling the Genesis in Hyundai dealers again.

Raphael explained the strategy behind that today. He says that every Hyundai dealer was offered the option to sell Genesis vehicles if they wanted. To do this, they'd need to abide by Genesis' rules. This includes the plan of having a separate facility for sales and service since the buying experience for a G90 is supposed to be vastly different than buying an Accent. Eventually, Genesis wants its cars to be out of Hyundai showrooms and within standalone dealerships.

In total, about 400 dealers have accepted the Genesis offer to sell its cars and are in various stages of readiness. Raphael thinks all the dealerships will be registered and ready to sell Genesis cars by March 2019, with standalone showrooms to come later. Every version of the G70 will be on sale this month, though, so Genesis is preparing for what it expects to be its highest-volume car yet.

You'll have to wait until early 2020 for the brand's first crossover, though, according to Raphael. It can't come soon enough, as Genesis continues to face sales headwinds with its all-sedan lineup in a time of sharply declining sedan sales. It sold about one-third as many cars in August as it had sold in August 2017.

And Raphael hinted that we shouldn't give up on the Essentia Concept quite yet. "We are very committed to the Essentia." If adapted to a production car, it would be "a limited edition" and "a statement car," Raphael says.

It would be a bold move for Genesis to come out with an electric supercar or even something like it, but we certainly wouldn't complain. For now, the brand is hoping to get back to actually selling cars, with the addition of the cheaper G70 sports sedan. Official pricing isn't released yet, but Genesis says it'll start around $35,000.
