  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone, it’s been a long time since I’ve posted but I’m in a bit of a mess with insurance. I currently drive a 12’ 3.8 sedan with about 140k miles. I was recently involved in a small TC involving the passenger door. Long story short, insurance is leaning towards totaling out the car and leaving me without a vehicle. I have been driving this rental car, a 23’ G70 2.0t and it’s persuaded me to get into a newer vehicle. The Hyundai Genesis is my first vehicle and I love how it sounds after doing some modifications. Since driving this rental, I like all the features it has and it’s “new driving feel”, I do not see this G70 as a practical DD for me. I am 6’4, with the seat all the way to the back and with it having sporty seats, I cannot get out comfortably.

I am looking to purchase a ‘17-‘20 G80 Sport as my first option. There are a few here in the state of CA but they have an avg of 80k miles. I’ve been trying to find out if the 3.3t is more reliable than the 3.8 motor. I also like the look of the Sport. I know if I can’t get the sport, I can settle with the 3.8 G80 cause I know there’s a way to convert to the sport bumper.

Now onto the G70. After doing my initial research, I found out that you can get the 3.3T in the G70. I’m looking for the same model years. The thing I would sacrifice would be space. Again, there are a few that have about 80k miles.

I would want to find out if it’s worth buying a G80 or G70, 3.8 over the 3.3t, Sport vs Base. I haven’t received word from the insurance company on what they wanna do with my vehicle. If all comes to worse and I cannot get into something newer, there are some BH models for sale under 60k miles for under 10k that I’ll just buy.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

G80 3.8 for sure is most reliable. I’ve heard the 3.3Ts haven’t been that great.

They probably just took the mid 2000s Sonota V6 engine and didn’t reinforce it for a turbo.

The 3.3T is actually incredibly bulletproof, albeit thirsty. The only real negative is the lack of dual injection which was rectified by the 3.5T.

Interesting. All the 100,000+ mile G70s and Stingers even with the 3.3T have not been in great shape.

Maybe they just weren’t taken care of.

Yeah... owners of those Stingers and such, at that kind of mileage often times neglect their cars and use them aggressively. The Stinger, although not a bad car, comes off as a car that would be owned by those that roll with BMWs sideways. Unironically it was also made in collab with BMW, lol.

Don't get me wrong, I dig the car. It's just that the owner base tend to be questionable.

On the other hand, the 3.8 is probably more reliable for the longest run than the 3.3T. Probably runs cooler and doesn't suffer from the typical hot V issue twin turbo cars do. I know the 3.3 is reliable as well, but probably not truly as much as the 3.8. The 3.8 is actually my favorite out of all these engines. Seems to be the best balance.

Note that the 3.3T isn’t a hot V (turbos in the valley between cylinder banks).

The one on my G70 hasn’t had any issues, even though with mods mine is pushing 50% more horsepower than stock. I do follow the severe service schedule and change oil every 3000 miles (which EVERY Genesis owner should do regardless of engine, due to the engine architecture using the equipment of a solid flat lifter on a pushrod engine).

In any case the 6 and 8 cylinder Genesis engines are apparently much more reliable than the Hyundai/Kia 4 cylinder engines, boosted or NA.
