Sounds like a natural progression with the new Genesis G80. How do the two compare?
I considered all comparable vehicles when I finally made the decision to get the G90, and thus far, I haven't regretted it. In my very humble opinion, the G90 has better build quality than the 750 had, and the materials look and feel just as good, if not better. My 750 had almost every option, and was $112,000 new. The G90 has even more equipment for almost $40,000 less, so it's a no-brainer. I will say, though, that there are a couple of nits to pick.
First, in the BMW, certain settings could be made permanent, such as the brake hold feature, which I find very useful, but others may disagree. On the G90, I have to turn it on each time I drive it. However, once it's on, it is superior to the same feature on the BMW because it's not intrusive. Depending on how much one pushes the brake pedal, it will allow the car to stop and then creep forward when needed, or it can be fully engaged by pushing the pedal a bit harder, similar to the pump of the brake pedal one would do in a Mercedes. That's the best of both combined. On the BMW, every time the car came to a complete stop, including when attempting to parallel park, it would fully engage, which made it a bit annoying.
There are other things I didn't (and still don't) like about the G90. One is the "tick-tock" of the turn signal which (to me) is a bit too loud and annoying. Another source of annoyance was the incessant announcement of upcoming traffic light cameras; that nearly drove me insane. I still don't know how I managed to turn it off, but at least that is no longer bothering me. One final convenience feature that can be intrusive is the automatic trunk opener. I much prefer to decide when and if I want to open the trunk, instead of it opening for me (whether I want it or not) if I'm near the back of the vehicle. I was recently helping my elderly father walk to the passenger side door, and we crossed behind the G90 in the parking spot, triggering the trunk to open. Normally, if that were to happen when I'm by myself, I would quickly move away from the vicinity and the warning beep would stop. This time, I couldn't move faster, so the trunk opened. I know...first world problems, but annoying nonetheless.
One final comparison comes to mind: the engine and transmission. I opted for the 5 L V8, as I feel the power delivery from a N/A V8 is much smoother than that from a forced-induction V6. When called upon to accelerate, the G90 will no doubt move, but it seems to always be in the wrong gear and have to downshift in order to get moving, especially when merging onto a highway. That's something the BMW did much better. It too needed to downshift at times, but I recall it had more torque to allow it to more effectively speed up and merge, whereas the G90 seems to already be in too high a gear and gets bogged down, triggering the downshift. I tend to drive my cars gently, so I don't go racing around town, but knowing this about the car's behavior, I occasionally use the paddles and shift down to a more appropriate gear while entering the on-ramp so as to be prepared to move if needed, but even in this scenario, if I take a little too long to jump on it, it will upshift and take the wind out of my sails. Again, it is not the way I usually drive so it's not that big of an issue. I anticipate, adjust and continue to enjoy the G90.
*Just remembered and edited the post to include this. The air conditioning. When outside air is allowed into the cabin, the filter does a very poor job of keeping odors (and I'm assuming particulates) from entering the cabin. Outside smells (exhaust fumes from other vehicles, etc.) get in. In the BMW and in my current other vehicle, no odors ever come through. I therefore have to keep the A/C in recirculate mode and remember to occasionally let outside air in to refresh the cabin.
Having had many different luxury cars through the years, including some very high-end vehicles, and being quite picky about fit, finish and performance, I have to say that the G90 was a good purchase. I'm approaching my 1 year anniversary of ownership, so time will tell if this was ultimately a good buy. Now, all I'm worried about is the first service. Without attempting to sound snobbish, with my other car, I'm used to a certain level of attention and quality of work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be acceptable.
For those interested, this was the 750 I replaced with the G90. I've yet to take "glamour shots" of the G90.
