Hi All,

I have been smelling gas in the cabin every time when getting off the higway. Car has 42k miles. Any suggestions? Had same issue with my Audi A8 many years ago and turned out to be a seal on the cover of the gas tank in the trunk...

Thanks!
PK

I’d be for having the dealer service dept checking this out ASAP.
As you said it’s most likely a seal leaking.

Thank you. I scheduled a visit at the dealership. I will post back once the problem is resolved.

Did you have this resolved? I have the same issue with my G80

Unfortunately nothing. I will ask them to document my problem in the system next time I do oil change and then I will wait until my car sets itself on fire. Good thing I don’t smoke.

Pop the rear seat bottom out

and check the top of the fuel pump for leakage:

Maybe your wife shouldn't have had that mega-bean burrito.

Just kiddin'.

I assume you're not getting a CEL? If you are, have an auto parts store check for codes.

Can you tell whether the gasoline smell is coming from the engine compartment or from inside the cabin?
If you can't tell, next time it does it pull over, open the hood and check if you can smell gas.

Identifying where the smell is coming from will go a long way towards fixing the problem.
If it's under the hood, it could be the Crankcase Emission Control System or Evaporative Emission Control System

Have your dealer test the canister close valve, the EVAP canister, and the fuel tank vapor vent hose between the EVAP canister and air filter.

If it's from the cabin, have them inspect the fuel filler hose/pipe to see if it's pinched, kinked or blocked.

I will definitely try that and will get back with results.

The fuel tank is underneath the rear seat?
Brrrrrr!

I haven't identified where the smell is coming from but I did a little experiment and when getting off the highway to a complete stop, I put on the recirc mode before stopping and never smell the gas. Although I don't want to be driving with recirc mode on beacuse in the winter it fogs up the windows. The most intense smell I get is when I get back home from work or a longer highway drive (25 mins or more) and back up to the driveway or garage. It smells the strongest to the point where I would be scared to light up the cigarette (if I smoked). Sometimes I close the garage door and pop the hood but I don't smell anything gas like.

Update.
I went to the gas station and when putting back on the gas cap, I noticed that it wiggles and feels very loose. Stopped by the closest Hyundai Dealership to pick up the new gas cap and here is the difference between the two (look at the seal):

With the new gas cap, when I put it on, it gives some resistance (pressurizes) and same thing when taking it off. So far so good! I will confirm in the evening when I go back home as it always happens when I get off the highway. (weird that it did not throw the CEL though)

Let me know if you have longer term success bc I have the same issue as you but it goes for all outside smells. I changed the cabin filter and still have the same problem.

I will confirm later this afternoon. In the meantime, I would recommend checking your gas cap.

When I did last oil change, I had a technician inspect my fuel system and around evap canister area and found nothing. He didn't check the gas cap though. I pray that this was it as it makes sense that I could smell it the most when backing into my driveway or a garage after a longer ride on the hwy. I will keep you posted.

I'll definitely check it out. I can smell gas anytime I stop the car after driving for about 20 minutes or more on the highway. How much did the gas cap cost?

Have you tried the switching on the recirculation mode? Try that before you get off the highway and keep it on for the next couple of stops and see if you smell it. If you don't, you know for sure it is coming from the outside. I feel like I want to get off from work now and just test it out again

I have tried it and it worked, so it is from outside like you said but definitely has to be something with my car.

Let's hope a new gas cap fixes it. I'll let you know in couple hrs.

Got back home, no smell. I think we have a winner! 🍻

I'm having the same issue with my vehicle the dealership who supposedly found the issue replace the EVAP CANISTER X3 , along with the charcoal canister that still did not fix the issue is anyone still having an ongoing issue?
