Genesis G70 Pricing

i just realized that the US market gets 22 different trims for the G70. 22! why so many? i mean, choice is great, but too much choice will cause havoc for the dealer network to stock these trims. many of the trims are separated by only $1000, although this is confused by the myriad RWD/AWD trims, so cost won't be a factor in every case - it will be content. i know Genesis seems to not like a la carte options or packages so i guess providing 22 trims is the next best thing? that gets confusing.

Canada gets 6 trims. yes, 6. i get that more US buyers prefer RWD compared to CAD so i understand a few more RWD trims being available, but does nearly every trim need RWD/AWD configurations? sure, the Sport trims and perhaps the lower trims make sense but not the mid-range trims.

again, i see the US trim lineup as being far too watered down, and my guess is that ~7-8 trims at most will see most of the action with the others either languishing or being dropped after the first year or two.

I see your point, but it would almost be more complicated to limit the RWD/AWD choice to certain trims only. Then you'd have buyers asking "why?" and being annoyed.

Likely that areas that get snowy will mostly stock AWD trims and other areas mostly RWD...

We have had 118 posts, and no one has mentioned the biggest, darkest, scariest skeleton in the closet - US Tariffs. While the US and Korea have just signed a new trade agreement, the German-US situation is still at sea.

When my lease is up, I'll be cross shopping the G70 against an Audi S4 or S5 and a highly optioned BMW340, (the sticker on my present '16 340 was $60K). I figure that the difference between the G70 and the cars I'm lookin at is roughly $10K +/-. If my name was Mr. Hyundai, I would certainly be looking at a price increase, maybe not as high as the tariff on the Germans, but still significant. Who knows, this might be a factor in why the pricing has been delayed.

Yeah but we don't really know how much the price on these vehicles will go up because some of their vehicles are made in the US and some of the parts are. I think Genesis needs to get their vehicles sold before considering price increases.

IIRC, a Genesis exec was asked about this and stepped back from that initial notion that it would be one year only and said something like, "We will continue to offer it if it sells."
I hope a bunch of enthusiasts with the scratch and inclination buy up some 6MTs... Genesis has certainly garnered a lot of attention by offering it.

I hope so too, because I don't like buying the first model year of any car after my experience with my GTI. Plus I'm not in the situation to buy a new car right now. Worst case, I'd have to settle on a used 2019 6MT if they did only offer it that year.

I don't recall where, but the one year 6MT rumor has been confirmed by Genesis to not be true. The 6MT will be around longer than a year. That said, they are definitely dying all over so I doubt it will last long.

^ yeah - i asked about that on here and was told by a GXM (i think that's who it is) that the rumor is not true.

my guess is that if the take-rate is low enough, Genesis will drop the sedan 6MT option for the mid-cycle refresh in a few years. but by then they'll likely have a coupe model in the works which i would expect to get a 6MT option since they are viewed as more performance oriented anyhow.

There used to be a $3000 rebate on the 2018 Audi A4, but that's gone. In fact, I'm seeing a lot of other mfgrs incentives disappear or decline and wonder why? I'm betting there will be price increases one way or the other for '19 models.

That's a LOT of car for $50K. While I have been waiting, I expected it to end up quite a bit more. But, of course, the tariff situation can change day by day.

The tariff situation does not include Korea because we have already made agreements with them.

I just wish you could get a 6MT with them! I'd consider them as I actually do prefer hatchbacks.

It will be interesting to see. I mentioned previously that the Stinger is very streamlined (or “limited” if you prefer) on which colors are available with each trim level.

With the 3.3 T, based on my poll we have 5, 7, 9 and 25 for the Advanced, Elite, Prestige and Sport. The Elite and Prestige mostly add options, but the Sport is, in some ways a different car, due the styling, wheels and suspension.

I’ve finally managed to see the red stitched seats live and they look so much better than the photos, as I think the gray sticched will, as well. When I can actually drive the Sport I will know if I will change my 3.3T Prestige vote to a 3.3T Sport vote, especially if only sport gets the Siberian Ice.

Nothing at the Seattle International Auto Show 11/9-11/12? They usually have a Genesis booth. I’ll be disappointed if there’s no G70.

I have been following Jonny Lieberman's instagram story while they are filming Motor Trends Best Car 2018, and they have 4 different G70's they are testing, including a manual 2.0, I texted him trying to get some info, but he won't shed any right now. Even when I asked when the video will be online. I sure hope they are at least also testing the Volvo S60, so that it will make my decision a lot easier lol! They have a total of 36 cars to play with.

Sorry that you guys in the States need to wait. I’m cross shopping the 3.3T with an A4 Technik, 2018 C300, and 2019 S60 R Design. Test drove all of them except the S60 which will only be available in a week or two. Also the S60 has at least a 60 day lead time.

The Audi and MB are new 2018s but fairly discounted at this time of year (also the C300 has a mid cycle refresh for 2019) therefore the 3.3 would actually be more expensive. But you get a much better engine, a ton more kit and a fresher design (that not everybody has, like the Germans). It falls short in terms of badge class, depreciation, fuel efficiency and that poor rear seat (foot) room.

The A4 drove better than the C300 (which has run flats) and the interior is stunning especially with Virtual Cockpit. The design I find classy but boring (although the S Line treatment does make a big styling difference). The C300 is beautiful and, with the Premium packs, has a lot of content but not as smooth as the A4 and likely more expensive, close to 3.3 pricing. Plus there are just too many of them on the road.

The new S60 looks quite intriguing, turbo and supercharged engine more powerful and likely faster than the Germans. Interior is fantastic and it is the only car that has a nicely integrated infotainment screen (love that Sensus!) unlike the less attractive stuck on iPod designs that the other 3 have. But I have to wait too long and pricing is similar to the 3.3.

So I am leaning towards the 3.3 (that’s why I just joined this forum) and that sweet twin turbo. Acceleration was outstanding and beyond compare to the turbo 2 litres. Is it perfect, no. And will it become too common, maybe, once all the 4 cyls hit the road and production ramps up. But that engine! HyunGen has done a great job with the G70 because I would never have considered them before, and I expect a number of conquest sales for HyunGen from potential customers like me.

Now I just have to get the wife past her Genesis disdain.

But I have to wait too long and pricing is similar to the 3.3.

Hopefully Volvo updated their 8spd tranny. Driving the 2018 S60 Polestar left a lot to be desired, in terms of shift speed. Other than that I was really impressed by that little 2.0S/T engine - that thing was powerful for the size and it actually sounded pretty dang good. I love the look of the previous generation (ie 2018 and earlier) and the next generation cars are even better looking. For me, I can't commit to the Volvo after feeling that lazy transmission, and knowing that there isn't much more potential left in the 2.0 engine (ie not much aftermarket support, too little displacement for my HP goals); but, other than those two things, I love that car, and I love how unique it is. I'm assuming the 2019 is better in every way!
