  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
    If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis G70 Reviews

did she say KDM gets the old 3.3T, new 2.5T and the diesel? that would seem like a strange choice. the gap between the 4cyl and 6cyl has been closed between those two options, so i wonder how many folks there will opt to go with the 2.5T over the 3.3T. if i misheard, and they will go to the 3.5T, then i imagine the spread will be similar to what it is now.

not sure what the plan is for NA, but i thought i read they were keeping the 2.0T and 3.3T.

This seems to come up in most reviews.. and even by owners. Maybe I should start a new thread, but this is a luxury sports car. Why do so many want a LOUDER engine? Interior and exterior? I would think it's more impressive to have quiet power than to have a roaring rumble. Face it, EVERY IC engine is loud. It's getting it quiet without power loss that requires engineering. I think I'm in the minority, but I just had to throw that out there.

Louder is more fun. Ive driven cars stock vs intake and exhaust and you would be surprised at how much it adds to the sensation of speed. Quiet power is how you end up going 100+ without realizing it. Its more fun to run it up to 60 and hearing the power. Not all the time, but thats why valved exhausts are becoming so popular with OEMs. Its a valid criticism for a car with any sporting intentions. Not sporty = no need

Oh, I do get that. I loved that growl from my old Infiniti G35 from a bit ago. I still recognize it when one drives by. It's just that tradeoff for luxury. Sports sedan is one thing (Stinger), but a luxury sports sedan is another (G70.) At least that's my thought.

I think thats where a lot of these reviews are coming from. They want the G70 to be more sport than luxury. I agree with the reviewers, to me the G70 is just enough on the sporty side that it needs more theater. It would be different if they had a higher performance variant available, but something with a trim called 'Sport' has got to back it up a bit. Not to mention the marketing theyve put out, which is undoubtedly sporty

I think Genesis is getting it wrong by doing G E N E S I S on the rear, as opposed to the winged badge...

Actually looks alright with the concave rear on the newer models, but doesn't look good on the old rear design of the G70 (neither do the taillights).

As an aside, seems like Lexus is following suit with spelling out the name at the rear based on their concept which us supposed to showcase their new design language.

That would be a new development, because last I had heard was that no upgrade to the 2.5T for the KDM (unlike for the Stinger).

Makes sense for Genesis to soften or civilize the G70 for the Korean market because that it was that particular market prefers (as a whole); in particular, noise ordinances don't allow for loud exhaust.

But that doesn't necessarily apply for this market.

Isn't the FL supposed to add the variable/bi-modal exhaust like the Stinger got?

Speaking of the Stinger, Biermann always made pains to distinguish the one from the other - stating that the G70 is a (lux) sport sedan whereas the Stinger is a Grand Tourer.

Would be odd then, to give the Stinger the more sporting nature.

^ 3 Kias and a Hyundai also won an award.

Can't say that I disagree with Mari's critiques.
Didn't care for the review. She keeps mentioning Sport Plus mode but never actually tells you what it does - is it only the sound? She seems fixated on the engine/exhaust sound. I don't think she ever even mentions what model year the car is (I know the title says 2022, but reviewers usually mention the year numerous times). She never really summarizes the features/changes to the new model.

Bottom line, they like the G70 a lot despite the unusual amount of issues they had with the car.

Another long-term wrap up; the next thing we should really see are first impressions of the FL G70 (albeit more on the cosmetic than mechanical front).

^^ They love it too but more so with the 3.3...

^ those 40k mile acceleration data are more in line with expected numbers. 0-60 in 5.4, 1/4 mile in 14s @ 99mph.

My thoughts on the 2.0T is really in-line with what Car and Driver described. One way I found to mostly redeem the weaker engine was doing my own downshifts when approaching a turn. Going into 2nd really helps with responsiveness of the turbo and not waiting for automatic downshifts. But it sucks going through like 4 gears one-by-one with paddles (even with Sport mode gear selection), and the rev matching is jerky when braking; I'll probably have to heel-toe in a freaking automatic lol. Also, turn off traction control, and the engine has plenty of power/torque to let the rear end shuffle a bit for some excitement. Not sure how long these things will keep me satisfied before I again want for the stronger engine lol.

Overall, the engine is torquey to be considered quick overall. But that quickness isn't fast enough to have the edge/risk that makes you slightly scared but also thrilled. There's a good amount of turbo lag when accelerating from any slow speed. Peak torque comes in low in the RPMs, but torque on the top end past ~5.5k RPM dies out so it doesn't feel satisfying to wring out. Sport mode isn't aggressive enough with gear selection to stay in the lowest, fastest gears around 2nd-4th when maneuvering around, so hopefully the facelift Sport+ mode resolves that. There's plenty of passing power for normal highways and on-ramps, but it's probably not enough if you're gonna drive crazy and fight with someone for a quick position. Fuel economy has been great and consistent relative to what people say about the 3.3T.

I still overall like the engine, and it should be good enough for me since I've never liked that risky speed feeling. But it sucks having even a few downsides and knowing they could've been avoided with the bigger engine. Hopefully turning off traction and relying more on 2nd gear will give me all the excitement I need.

You were likely joking a bit about the heel and toe with an automatic, but I wonder if the computer will even let you rev the engine while braking. Probably not, I haven't tried it.

These guys are good, but as they say - opinions can vary...

Would have loved to see what the 2.5T (lighter nose) could do against the 330i, but seems like we won't see it in the G70 til the 2G model (will have to make due with test drives of the 2.5T Stinger), but that'll likely also include a lighter chassis (will also likely grow in WB; note the comment, again, about the tight rear space).

Giulia is a ton of fun (even on base form w/o an LSD), but don't care for the front clip (those headlights are awful).

G70=1st and 2nd
3-Series=1st and 3rd
Alpha=2nd and 3rd

Good review. Lots of good information.

Nice review, thanks for posting it. I would love to try driving a Guilia.
Not surprising that the G70 was the heaviest - it was the only V6 (although maybe the 2.0 would still be?).
Where did they get 3300lbs for the BMW? Multiple websites on the Google show its weight as 3580lbs (for the 330i).
