  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Newbie here - first post.

Hello Genesis owners - need your input:

I am the owner of a 2007 Azera 3.8 Limited. I have been following the development of the Genesis sedan for some time. I regularly post on the Hyundai owners site and the Azera owners site. The Tau equipped Genesis with the 05 Technology package is what I was focusing on when it comes time to trade the Azera.

I took a test ride, finally, on Monday - Genesis 3.8, premium plus package. nice car - real nice, but not without issues.

Here's my primary issue: The Genesis ignition system does not provide for an "accessory" or "on" position as in vehicles with key ignitions. For instance, the radio cannot be used unless the car is running (a previous car, an Audi A6, had a keyless ignition but allowed for use of electrical components without the engine running). The Genesis apparently does not.

The salesman was not sure - I called Hyundai, they opened a case number and called back today and agreed that to operate the radio the car has to be running. Probably a lot of other items won't work without the engine running either.

A couple lesser issues but irksome nonetheless, especially in a "luxury" car, are the lack of a 12 volt outlet in the trunk and the lack of a shroud/cover/shield on the underside of the package tray when looking in from the trunk - very unfinished and cheap looking, IMO.

Here's the deal with the ignition:
Step on the brake, push the button, start the car. [Salesman's view]
Do not step on the brake, push the button once, get "accessories"
Do not step on the brake, push the button twice, get full "on"
Works just like a regular key. :)

The 12V outlet is in the console. Awkward, but if you had to have power in the trunk, you could run the cord through the trunk access panel behind the rear armrest.

I think most others here will support your trunk finishing comment. It's ugly and has been discussed often here.

THANK YOU - Wonder why the brain trust at Mother Hyundai couldn't come up with that answer (if in fact they even did any research before calling me back)?

Re: Genesis ignition sytem

I simply impressed that they called back!

Re: Genesis ignition sytem

Remember, this is the same brain trust that thinks the Genesis MAY be in dealerships by September.:D

I get that, but they did call back. They may not know what the hell they're doing but at least there's a sense of responsibility.

Hey, these days you have to find the small things to be excited about. Most companies/people will simply hope the issue goes away.

Now, where are those damn V8's!

Re: Genesis ignition sytem

Regarding these new proximity ignition systems, what do you do if you valet park?
Just give the key fob to the attendant, or stick the manual key in so as not to confuse the kid?

Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up! You'd be very surprised to find out how much "we" know as opposed to Hyundai employees...

In any event, I'm very glad to see that we (BaywayRic) were able to help you when Hyundai could not...

Thanks - similar issues over on the Azera Forum are being solved for member owners thanks to forum input versus dealers/salesmen/techs/Hyundai call centers. Guess I'll get back on the waiting list for the Tau.

Buying a car is starting to feel like buying software. The sellers don't want to support it. They would rather charge you on an hourly basis to teach you about it or let you get so frustrated that you form a online user group to figure it out!

It's a little counter intuitive. You give the attendant the remote, AFTER you remove and keep the manual key, which is integrated into the fob. In the glove box there is a switch which disconnects the trunk from the remote, so you can load all your 'stuff' in there and keep it safe. Then lock the glove box. There are only three key holes in the car, trunk, glove box and driver's door.

And if you have the Tech Package, you have an operating system [probably embedded] and several application systems, AND NO BACKUP CAPABILITY.

After a few hours you begin to realize how much effort you are putting in to load destination addresses for the NAV system, an entire phonebook for the PHONE system, as well as a myriad of settings for car features. You realize all of a sudden if it breaks, or the 40GB hard disk fails, you have no way to recover this data.

How easy would it have been for them to add one line to the car settings screen which says BACKUP. Insert a thumb drive [which could be provided by dealer with their logo, etc] into the USB port and select backup. You're done, and in the future you or the dealer can restore the system. Strange they didn't do this because in several places in the settings menus there is a pick list item called "Restore Factory Settings".

I guess we need to add this to the "What I want in the next Genesis Thread."

The backup idea is very good/nice. Do add that to the "What I want in the next Genesis" discussion. As for the valet system - it works exactly the same way for BMWs. You lock the center armrest/storage - which houses a button to open the trunk and glove compartment - and pull a part of the key out (which opens the trunk and center arm rest) - and give the rest to the attendant.

So the phonebook actually saves to the Genesis' memory? The BMW bluetooth system just syncs with, say, your iPhone. So as long as the phone book is there, you're safe. Same with the iPod. Nothing actually stores in the car's memory and I like it that way...

As far as I can tell, that's the only way to do it. Nice data entry system, but it does take awhile. The reason to do it is to enable voice commands and to add to caller ID. Whatever you use as Phonebook Name is displayed along with the incoming number. Same with the NAV system destinations. The NAV system has an address book as well.
