  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone know if the Genesis engine is pre-filled with synthetic motor oil at the point of assembly? I am now approaching 1,500 miles and contemplating whether I should get an oil changed with synthetic motor oil now rather than waiting until the recommended 7,500 miles.

I switched over to sythetic at 5000mi.

Comes non-synthetic. Switched to Mobil 1 0W-30 for the winter and just changed to Mobil 1 5W30 for Spring/Summer.

I used Mobil 1 5W-30 last summer, but will be running M1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy year round going forward.

Do not use Castrol Syntec or Amsoil 0W-30, which is a European formula and not suited for the Genesis (or anything except German cars that specify it).

Why not use Castillo, that's the oil I've been using for years with all my vehicles

Because Walmart does not sell it, and a Google search of 'Castillo motor oil' does not seem to come back with even a single relevant hit.

Castrol makes several oils that meet the spec. for the Kia/Hyundia engines. Castrol GTX (API grp.II) petroleum based, Castrol Syntec & Syntec Blend (API grp.III) Hydrocracked/Hydrotreated petroleum based and Castrol Edge (API grp.IV) PAO based oil. Castrol Edge is very similar to the Amsoil products which is also a PAO based oil.
All of these oils are available in viscosities suitable for our engines.

Yes, I agree, but don't use Castrol Syntec 0W-30 or Amsoil 0W-30 European Formula oils in the Genesis, which have different specs than the Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy oil sold in the US. That is the point I was making.

There is a lot more to oil specifications than just the "stated" viscosity, which can be very misleading for synthetic oils.

Mark,
That is correct. American Kia/Hyundia owners should use 5w/20 or 5w/30 in their vehicles regardless of what brand or base oil they chose.

I slightly disagree, in that Mobil 1 0W-30 or 0W-20 (both called Advanced Fuel Economy by Mobil for the these viscosities sold in the US) are acceptable also in the Genesis.

But Amsoil 0W-30 and Castrol Syntec 0W-30 are different (in ways other than the viscosity rating) and are designed for German car oil specs (European ACEA: A3, B3, B4; VW 502 00, 505 00; MB 229.1, 229.3, 229.5; BMW LL-01). The Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE does not meet these German car specs (as do none of the 5W-20 oils that Hyundai specifies).

I fail to understand why anyone would want to use an oil that does not meet the spec. of the engine manufacturer. My Borrego's owners manual recommends 5w/20 or 5W/30 only. I'm not sure what is recommended on the Genesis. I would suspect the same.

The issue with the European Formula oils like Amsoil 0W-30, Castrol Syntec 0W-30, and Mobil 1 0W-40 is that the exceed the specs. Exceeding the specs is usually not a problem, but the European Formula oils don't work well in engines not designed to run them. Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy is fine in the Genesis. Oil specifications for synthetics are a little more complicated than for conventional oils.
