Thanks Beefer for posting the JD Power study, that IMO is very current and relevant. CR I take with a grain of salt because my experience with some of the cars they rate is vastly different. The 15+ year report has some value but means little to me. My interest is in the reliability etc of a new car now (maybe past 5 years to current) not 15+ years ago. So many factors at play that are hard to measure, brand loyalty etc. Also, some brands have fallen off their game a little. My buddy has an older Jeep Cherokee with 285K+ miles and it still looks new, it sure isn't on any list. My '87 Vette (Chevette that is) I put insane miles on, never let me down it sure as hell ain't on any "good" list anywhere. I do however like reading these reports, ratings etc and deciding what's important to me.

I hate to break it to you, but there isn't a single online assessment that actually measures "reliability", because "reliability" itself is not a numeric quantity. Every "reliability" assessment online assumes correlation to equal causation, even if that isn't what it measures. There's all sorts of biases that exist. Things that bother some people like squeaks and rattles or a slow infotainment may not be considered by others to be a problem worthy of getting fixed or reporting online. And the frequency of vehicles breaking down in the middle of the road is something that will likely happen to a tiny fraction of modern cars, so most people won't have to deal with that. Essentially, all these assessments do is measure risk. Not every car will have all or maybe any of the problems.

What does matter though is CONSISTENCY of results across each of these assessments. JD Power's assessment goes completely against most other online assessments that claim to measure reliability, like I mentioned before with iSeeCars, Repair Pal, Consumer Reports, etc. But this can be explained because what JD Power measures is not the same as what others measure, since they count only the frequency of problems. This is what people need to take into account before using JD Power as a tool for any kind of presumed reliability.

That's true, and I agree with you that consistency matters. If every metric that likely has some correlation with reliability shows Hyundai/Genesis near the top then there's a good chance they make reliable cars.

Just to add to your list, I also like to use Carcomplaints. It takes a bit more work since it's more like raw data, but the advantage is that you can make use of the data however you want (e.g. comparing between any model of cars, over any number of years, and compare between specific problems like engine or transmission).

I take the # of complaints and divide by the # of cars sold over the year(s) to get a complaint rate. I'm still a bit leery of comparing cars of different classes, so I prefer comparing within a class (e.g. Accord vs. Camry vs. Sonata etc.), and the results are largely similar. Toyota/Lexus still on top, with Kia/Hyundai/Mazda a step behind, and Honda/Subaru another step behind, then the domestic and European brands. You can of course dig further and compare specifically transmission or engine complaint rates, but the sample size then becomes small enough that it's difficult to compare between all but the most popular models.
 
Yes, I've used Carcomplaints numerous times, and I like how they actually have the amount of NHTSA complaints logged in there too. The only problem is that like TrueDelta, they seem to be behind in data for newer vehicles, especially luxury ones. Great resource for used though.
 
This is not by any means a reliable/scientific study but a personal experience. I have a very good friend of mine that is the owner of a general mechanic shop and talking to him a couple of years ago he told me that he always has three times more American/German cars than Asian in his shop for any kind of repairs. At that time my father was retiring and was planning to buy a car for keeping many years, my friend gave this advice" tell him to buy a Toyota, a Honda or even a Hyundai and the car will outlive him, DO NOT buy American or German" My father followed his advice.

agree , jd powers is kinda of a big deal in the auto industry. off topic but why isnt tesla on there (because they didnt agree to paricipate ) :unsure:
 
I have a fun story to share. When I was buying my G70 I kept hearing the cars were at port and I was begging the manager to figure out why they were held up there and not moving to the dealerships. The story he shared with me (grain of salt here) is that Genesis was trying extremely hard to get in good with the upcoming JD power survey. Since the survey needs the cars in the customers hands, Genesis was holding onto the ones at port for extra checks and delays to ensure anything going to customers would either not have any issues, or it they would take ownership after the survey was closed. Not sure if this was true, but just like anything it seems it can be slightly manipulated for the manufacturers benefit

only if they were truly using that time for extra checks. If they were just using that time to hold the cars until the survey closed...then no. But I dont know whats the truth there, my jaded mind assumes that they were more than likely just doing the latter

It's funny because the JD power survey in this thread doesn't even have the G70 in it. It only counts 2017 Genesis, so only the G80 and G90.
