so I have no idea what got splashed on my grille, but it got messed up pretty bad. the finish just came right off, when I tried to wipe off whatever was on it. so it was stained, and had large areas where the finish was totally gone.
needless to say, I was off to ebay, and luckily there were two options out there for a replacement factory grille.
one was used, and in good shape, but there was a brand new one, for about 100.00 more. I grabbed the new one, and replaced it myself, in about 1-1.5 hours, without taking the front bumper off. it wasn't too bad, but you need a really short screwdriver, or one of those slim ratchet screwdrivers, which is what I used. that made it much easier. now that I know how to do it, it would probably be less time, but it really wasn't too bad to do yourself. patience is a must.
now I have a nice new grille again, and hopefully I wont run into whatever it was that got on the original one any time soon.
