  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Tripmeter 3.8L, 2011

I never stated that it was broken but only that it does not operate in accordance with its published manual.
Even though I disagree with how the tripmeter (Elapsed time, mpg, mph) should operate, I would be satisfied and say maybe Hyundai will correct it in the future if only it did operate in accordance with the manual which it does not.
As you can see, some of the other post regarding various vehicles do not reflect a timer and also state the mpg are not reset until reset manually.
Maybe they have it right.
As far as being sold.
When you purchase something and it does not operate as expected or as advertised or as stated in the manual but is NOT BROKEN do you simply accept it or do you return it or question it ?
I wonder.
I really do not understand your defensiveness in this situation.
I am simply questioning it and probably whomever in their infinite wisdom decided that an arbitrary timer was what was needed. Needed for what ?
The What and the Why is what I am asking.
  1. As I mentioned in a previous post above, if you read the Owner's Manual before purchase, and relied on the incorrect description of the trip computer to purchase the car, then you might have a valid case to get your money refunded. I doubt they can easily change the trip computer, but maybe I am wrong. Most likely any such change would have to come from Korea even if it were possible.
  2. There is a big difference between “operating as expected" and “operating as advertised" since I doubt anyone told you (advertised) about how it worked before purchase or that you read the Owner’s Manual regarding the trip computer before purchase. I would support your efforts to get a refund (or some compensation) if it did not work as advertised in advance of your purchase, or if they gave you a copy of the Owner’s Manual to read before purchase, and you relied on that description of the trip computer to make your purchase.
  3. I agree that the Genesis trip computer is not the best and could use improvement, and that many other cars have better trip computers. These cars were designed in Korea, where I guess they are not as concerned about trip computers as we are. I mentioned previously about my complaint concerning the trip odometer only going to a maximum of 999 miles, which may be fine a small country like South Korea, but sort of limiting in the US. So I agree they are many improvements they could make.
  4. I don't think I am being defensive, just explaining to you how transactions work between consumers and businesses, and what the legitimate rights of consumers are (if and when false advertising occurs) and when you only free to make suggestions, but not demand that your current trip computer be changed.
  5. BTW, I believe that the Owner's manual was created in Korea, since when I look at the PDF version with Adobe Acrobat, it complains about missing fonts, etc. The Owner's manual may be misleading or possibly just wrong, but as stated above, that does not mean the trip computer is broken, it means the Owner's Manual is not accurate.
  6. My understanding of the arbitrary timer (2-3 hours of idle and it resets) is to allow one to stop for food, gas, etc on a trip, and the trip is still considered to be the same trip. But once your car is idle for 2-3 hours, then they assume it is a new trip.
