  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Recently noticed the wheels on my genesis (2009) are peeling and chipping. It is the wheel coating that is bubbly, wrinkled. Took to a dealer and they said that an acid cleaner had been applied. This, I assured them, had never happened. I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar issues such as this. Or if someone might know other causes of why the coating would peel. Unfortunately they won't warranty the wheels, although all the other problems I have been having (GPS system, CD player, driver seat cooler) have been under warranty! Thanks for any insight. my genesis is a sedan, 3.8 if that matters.

Are you talking about the alloy wheel itself, or the removable wheel hub? Some people have reported that the finish on the 18" wheel hub has bubbled or peeled. Not sure if that was, or was not, caused by wheel cleaning fluids that are too aggressive, but doesn’t seem to affect everyone.

I do not recall any posts about the alloy wheel itself bubbling or peeling, but I could be wrong.

Have you ever taken your car to a carwash? If so you have no idea of what cleaners thay used on your wheels.

BTW, warranty on the paint and audio system is 3 years/36K miles.

As I am sure you know, warranty on most other things is 5 years/60K miles, or 10 years/100K miles for drivetrain.

How do you fix this problem. I have the same issue?

My wheels are doing this - especially around the edge of the rim.

I showed my dealer when the paint was under warranty...they blamed it on tire shop where I bought my tires. You can tell the metal is not abraided.

It continues to get worse - and I haven't had new tires mounted since.

I am now no longer under warranty. There is also a TSB. It blames car washes.

I bet I have taken my car through an automatic wash less than 10 times in 36K miles.

It is disappointing.

@ 60 000 km they just repainted my 4 wheels under warranty

Great going Hyundai

:p:p:p

Same here. All four wheels are flaking. I've now had three comments from people saying that the wheels look like crap. I took it to the dealership, they said they've never seen it. Out of warranty by 8 months, nothing they can do. 57K miles on it. They gave me the number to Hyundai Customer Support. Hyundai said out of warranty and will not cover it.

To Ford I go. This is unacceptable. There are no scuff marks. No abrasions. Nothing that would cause this much flaking and peeling.

Two possible explanations:
  1. Harsh wheel cleaner chemicals meant for aluminum or alloy wheels, and not meant for painted wheels. Could have been applied by owner or at a car wash.
  2. Brake fluid (which will cause just about any paint to peel). If the brake fluid was changed under the TSB (to use DOT-4 fluid) a technician might have allowed brake fluid to get on the wheels.
