In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hello everyone. I've had my eye on the Genesis since 2009. Always been afraid of the brand though. Last week a young girl with a license that was 2 months old pulled out in front of me. My lexus ES330 is now totaled. My 1st inclination was to find a newer ES350 and I began to search. I was on my 2nd Lexus and I knew the brand. Both of my ES's gave me ZERO trouble and were very nice to drive. Then I remembered the Genesis and began to research. I was surprised to find them at the top of most used car lists in the large luxury category. I found a few of them in the Indy area. Then I drove one. Wow. I was shocked. So I narrowed the search down to a base 2010 in black with black interior, 32k miles and a pearl white 2010, loaded with 53k miles. Both were 1 owner cars, accident free, great history. I got the white one as I had the pleasure of meeting the folks that traded it in. Settled on $13k and I sign the papers tomorrow and pick it up when the insurance check comes Monday. I felt good about the purchase.......and then I found this forum.

I was offered a 48 month, 48k mile bumper to bumper warranty that covers the car to 100k miles or 2021 for $2600. Some company that starts with a Z. I declined at the time. The ABS posts have me jittery now. I have had trouble free driving for the past 17 years. Am I in for some trouble with this car? How common is this ABS issue? Is there a warning sign to the issue, some indicator before the pedal hits the floor and my family slides into an intersection? Is the warranty a must? I'm not new to forums so I understand that a lot of folks come when they have problems and not to trumpet the virtues of their cars. I don't know how to post a pic here just yet but here's a link to my car.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
The brake failure problem occurs in the HECU, which controls the anti-lock system. From what I can tell, the failure is only likely to occur when the brakes are applied so hard (or road conditions are very bad) such that the anti-lock system is activated. That does not mean that every time the ABS is activated that a problem will occur.

If you have a loaded (Technology Package) 2010 Genesis, then there are other issues to be concerned about, mostly related to the audio and navigation system. Typically, these are very expensive to repair, as Hyundai dealers typically only know how to swap out the entire unit at a cost of about $3K for parts alone.

However, after looking at the pics from you link, you have the Premium Package, not the Technology Package, so it should be a little more reliable. The engine and transmission (made by Aisin) are pretty reliable for that model year.

You will have to replace the Flying H on the trunk, and replace the wheel hub covers, both with the Genesis wings, unless you want to drive around with a paper bag on your head. There are many threads in this forum with instructions on where to get them and how to replace them.

I was just looking through the badges thanks to a link provided in the welcome email. I will definitely be replacing them stat.

You are correct, it is the premium navigation package and not the technology package. After hearing about the stereo/nav issues and associated costs I'm the happier for it. Now about that warranty.....

If your best friend was purchasing a used Genesis would you advise against it or for it? $2600 seemed kind of steep until I saw the quoted prices of the HECU.

Make sure you get the wings designed for your model year and trim level (if getting wheel hub wings).

Looks like a nice clean low mileage car.

Take the VIN to a local Hyundai dealer and ask for the service history. It will show if/when/how the HECU recall was handled and what else has ever been serviced (if by a Hyundai dealer) as logged in their system.

Tech package cars had more issues w/ the head unit than the Premium, as I recall.

My advice would be to skip buying ANY 8 year old car (that comes without ANY warranty) and expect it to be trouble-proof. Instead, go find a CPO '13, or '14, Genesis at a reputable Hyundai dealer and price their extended warranty offerings too.

I find it amusing that the 1st Gen Genesis is near the top of the used car reviews, value priced, but either picked apart or wildly praised. It's always a roll of the dice, some cars are great and some are nightmares. I had a 2002 Audi A6 2.7TT Quattro, most comfortable ride ever. That is, when it wasn't in the repair shop. Looking back, I regret ever putting a dime into the car. But I followed the general wisdom given to me and thought the advice of others would suffice. Wrong answer.

My 2010 Genesis 4.6 Premium/Tech is at 75,000 miles with nary a complaint. Fast, quiet, comfortable, DEPENDABLE, and fuel efficient, all without an extended warranty. If I went by the write ups I see in this forum, I might have apprehensions about owning the car. If it breaks, it'll be expensive to fix. Any vehicle produced these days that's worth the money will be expensive to fix. That's why I maintain, it's a roll of the dice. Some here have many miles without any problems, others not so good. If you like it, and it seems to be in reasonable shape, drive it and enjoy. The days of points, condensers, feeler gauges, and drum brakes are over, and so are cheap fixes. I've got other things to worry about.

That's all well and good, but you likely have a 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty on your car. The original poster would have no warranty whatsoever if he buys this car.

Also, you have been driving your car for all these years. The original poster is buying a car that other people have been driving for 8 years. In other words, it is a crapshoot for him to buy this car.

All fair assumptions, but all incorrect. It's best to know the facts rather than make assumptions.

I bought my car used, in 2012, with 26,000 miles on the odometer. Someone else drove the car before I did and racked up those miles. Were they trouble free miles? I had no idea. So, today I'm 15,000 miles beyond the 6/60 warranty period and without any problems. No 10/100 period applicable.

When I bought my Genesis, I knew I was taking a chance and might be getting someone's headaches. But it was a gamble I felt comfortable with, given the effort Hyundai was making to enter this aspect of the auto market. We all know the problems they had with their older, smaller cars that were competing with Corollas, Sentras, Jettas, etc. Small, cheap cars are usually fraught with problems because corners were cut to make the car affordable. On the other hand, enough posters on this site have railed about their experiences with various BMW, Mercedes, and other high dollar brands, which have been around for a long time, but still have major and repetitive problems. Most of the European car refugees that made the move to the Genesis seem to have been pleasantly surprised at their experience. Not all, mind you, but most have.

Two facts of life: things break and people get sick. These are unavoidable, but can be delayed by proper risk management. Don't change the oil? Good luck. Eat things in excess, that should be better managed? Again, good luck. I do some engineering work and always try to imagine the consumer post purchase. Will they have a good experience with my product? I hope so, so I try to engineer things that will be simple and last through the expected life cycle. Given the Genesis was an upstart project in an expensive area of the automotive market, I think Hyundai did a pretty damn good job. Are these cars perfect? NO! I again reference BMW and M-B. They've had years of experience, building expensive luxury cars, and still have their issues. All in all, I'm very pleased with my Genesis. And no, I have no association at all with Hyundai, except for being a satisfied customer.

FGPalmer71, I wish you the best with your purchase and hope you have the same experience I've enjoyed so far. :)

(You may have noticed that I haven't referenced Lexus. Damn fine auto, but everybody has one and I'm not of that mindset.)

The price seems high. I just purchased a 2013 I got a 5/150k warranty for 1740.00. I prefer known to unknown. Not a brand issue. So having a warranty is peace of mind for me

I am not sure you can get a Hyundai extended warranty once the manufacturers warranty runs out. Third party warranties are available, but the older the car, the more it costs.

The price on the warranty was indeed high. I worked it out to 4yrs, 60k miles with zero deductible for $2200. I signed last night and pick up the car next week when the check for the Lexus comes in.

I don't expect to purchase an 8 year old car and have a trouble free, long term ownership experience. The last ES 330 i bought CPO in 2007 and even it had issues with the sunroof and rear shade. I want to mitigate my issues when ever possible. I had a Cadillac at 1 point and learned a hard lesson on that POS. I attempted to mitigate my risk on this purchase by researching, choosing a low mileage, 1 owner car with verifiable service history and no accident history. That, along with speaking to the original owner and purchasing the extended warranty is all I can do.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I look forward to the Genesis experience. Badges, tint and some wheels are coming in the near future.

I did Henryb. I needed the peace of mind.

On a seperate note I ordered my Genesis trunk badge last night and was having trouble finding the proper Genesis center caps. The only place I'm seeing them is ebay. Is that my only option? I'm skipping the hood emblem, I love the front the way it is.

They are all over Ebay, mine came from Korea but you should be able to get from US supplier

The front logo really "picks up" the look

I bought a 2012 3.8 Genesis CPO a few months ago with the "CPO wrap" insurance ...paid $2000 for it. I don't plan to work on this car and a $1000 for a repair is not unusual these days....got peace of mind this way. Our 2009 BMW 528i was in the shop to fix 3 minor oil leaks and a gas leak....cost $2300. Still cheaper than trading and getting another car at this point. Buy the insurance if you can swing it.

I did. Ended up getting 48 mos, 60k mile, $0 deductible for $2200.

I got the check in the mail at the same time as my trunk badge showed up. I pick her up tomorrow. As soon as I pull into the garage the trunk badge is going on! Looking forward to enjoying this car.

....on a side note I think I might miss this Maxima SV rental I've had the past 2 weeks. Never enjoyed a CVT, but having that much power with one has made it palatable. Torque steering demon but pretty fun to tame.

Just got home with the Genesis. I must say that I'm EXTREMELY pleased with my decision to get this over the ES350. I had gotten so used to the pillow-y ride of my ES330 that I had almost forgotten what it was like to REALLY drive. My only issue at this point is the dead pedal....or lack thereof. Is there a solition for that? Has anyone else even had an issue with it?
