  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Goodbye G70

Thought i would add some insight to warranty refusal due to modifications. There is a law on the books that state it's the dealers responisibilty to show the modifications is the reason of the malfunction.

This argument already occurred in this thread. Feel free to scan back a couple posts

First, I want to say thanks to everyone on this forum that contributes in any way, even just commenting on your experiences. I am in search of my next new car and the 2021 G70 2.0L with manual transmission is on my list.

I just read where Consumer Reports took the G70 off of their recommended lists due to problems/
"Consumer Reports has removed the recommendation of 16 vehicle models, including the Audi E-Tron, Ford Ranger, Genesis G70, Kia Soul, and Subaru Ascent, because of their below- or well-below-average reliability, as identified in our 2020 auto surveys of CR members."
16 Cars Lose Consumer Reports' Recommendation Due to Reliability Issues

My question to all of you, how do you feel about this? I just want a fun to drive but reliable car to own for ten + years. I am currently still driving the 2006 Mazda3 5 speed sedan I bought new, I also own a 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan with the 3.8L v6 engine and it has been a super car to drive and enjoy.
.... My only real requirement is that my next car also be a manual transmission!
.... I had a test drive in a BMW 230i, 2 door sport coupe, 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo and loved it.... But it was an automatic and a manual transmission would be a special order, Besides not being able to test drive the car I want before putting down a deposit to order it, I don't know if I want to own a BMW.
<> Any suggestions or comments welcomed <> It is also hard to locate a G70 with a manual. I have to drive at least 100 + miles to test one!

Not sure why you’re hi hijacking Todd’s thread.

That is a surprise, I hadn't seen that Consumers dropped the G70. Too bad. Did they say what the most common issues/complaints were? I suspect it might be the brake issue so many have had due to the crappy pads. So unfortunate and unnecessary.
Of course it's hard to extrapolate to ten years, but after two years, mine (2019 3.5T AWD) is still great (not perfect, but none are). It's been very reliable, hasn't been to the dealer in over a year.

True, this should be a different/new thread.

Not sure why you’re hi hijacking Todd’s thread.
If that is how you feel, I am very sorry. Maybe I wasn't thinking and maybe I did hijack it but that wasn't my intention. I have read thru all of the posts and I thought he was leaving. I actually would like for him to reply because everyone values his opinion but I am always thankful for anyone's opinion.

And okay, I will start a new thread then. Please forgive me and ignore the interruption.

So, I’ve had my g70 for 15 months now. Brakes were an issue with pad deposits, I upgraded; After they cut rotors twice and replaced pads once.
Dark chrome trim issues with spotting and fading. Dealership polished. Meh, it’s ok as far as a fix (I plan on chrome deleting).
Some interior issues with “rubberized” trim around the console peeling. Took care of it myself.
My sunroof stopped working...awaiting parts to arrive for a fix (it’s been 6 weeks, thankfully it stopped working when it was fully closed). I get it, they’re having a lot of sunroof issues and there’s a “pandemic” yada yada yada...
My dealer has been really good about trying to rectify any issue I have brought to them. I’ve heard other dealers aren’t as...customer service oriented.

Now for the good. I bought my 3.3 rwd as a fun car...and it’s been nothing but fun. I’ve modified the snot out of it (pretty much bolted on every go fast part you can buy) and I regularly hurt the feelings of camaro and mustang boys. With a few suspension upgrades I’ve done, I can hang with cars 2x the cost of mine with no issues (until the PS4s run out of grip).

So to kind of answer your question: I firmly think it’s about the dealer you buy from and how much you can “deal” with as an owner.
for the record, I’ve had cars I’ve bought that have had zero issues and others I traded/sold ASAP because they were crap, so I’ve been all around the gamut on vehicles.
I’d buy another genesis from the dealer I bought mine from. Not sure if this helps, just my $0.02

As alluded to in other posts, I let my G70 go. There are a couple reasons why...

First, the treatment I received at my local Genesis dealership after dealing with a broken turbo flange stud (due to my failed attempt at installing primary DP's). Their sheer incompetence, and attempting to charge me for tools, I ended up repairing it on my own by replacing the entire passenger side turbo with a brand new OEM part directly from Genesis. Despite using all new hardware and gaskets, and following each step as outlined in the FSM, Genesis - at the discretion of my dealership - revoked my full warranty down to a sort of partial warranty. The explanation that the Genesis rep gave to me didn't make much sense, nor did the reasoning; but, simply put, other than cutting down the length of the warranty to that of a 2nd owner/transfer warranty, they also told me they would have to have special authorization to complete any warranty work in the future.

After completing my repair of my G70, I decided to give my dealership one more chance by seeing if they could do my first complimentary service on the car. After calling the service manager, she explained to me that my current warranty doesn't cover complimentary oil changes/services; but, ultimately decided to 'go the extra mile' and allow complimentary services for one year. Irritated, I eventually figured I would just go for it and let them at least change my oil for free. After getting my car back, I spoke with the tech who drove my car back to my house. He was a pleasant guy, so I chatted him up about cars, and eventually about mods. He reinforced what the dealership had told me prior to this - ANY modifications and they will void my warranty. Anyway, later on, I decided to inspect their work and noticed a significantly overtorqued drain plug to the point where the washer was completely deformed and I was surprised the threads weren't stripped in the block. Also, the oil filter cartridge was crossthreaded and leaking.

By this time I had spent months going back and forth with my dealership, and Genesis corporate about my warranty - and to top it all off it was clear that my dealer was absolutely inept at performing even routine maintenance. I had completely lost trust in Genesis and my dealership.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, when doing my 10,000 mile oil change I noticed leaking fluid at the bottom of my bellhousing. Prior to this, I had seen increasing reports of leaking in this area both on the G70 and the Stinger, either being attributed to a rear main seal leak, or a leak from the transmission side. When I saw that my car shared this same leak, I could only assume that my car had one or the other of those two aforementioned problems. Whichever it was didn't matter, as the diagnosis would require the same work - the engine and transmission would have to be removed from the car, and separated to inspect the interior of the bellhousing.

Considering my experience with my local dealership I knew that I would be taking a substantial risk to bring it to them for repair. First, there would be a significant chance that they wouldn't repair it under warranty, considering how much frustration I went through with them in the past which ended up with me losing my full warranty. Second, even if they went ahead with the repair (whether under warranty or if I paid out of pocket) how could I trust them to complete the job properly? How could I be sure they wouldn't screw something else up, and weasel their way out of any responsibility? How would my resale value look if my car had new problems after a "repair" by my incompetent dealership?

It was clear to me that if I wanted my car fixed, I'd most likely have to be up for a fight. My state only has one dealership, located in the center of the state. The other dealership that is close to me is the one that I had problems with (Genesis of Vancouver, WA). So, if I wanted any chance of a repair being done right, I'd have to drive 4hrs away from home, then find a way back, and hope and pray that Genesis would honor the mistake of THEIR poor quality control during the assembly line. No seal should be leaking on a new car with only 10,000 miles on it.

I decided to remove all my modifications in preparation to bring it to that dealership... But, by the time I had everything removed I realized something. I didn't love my car anymore. In fact, I hated it. All I saw in my car was the reminder of how poorly Genesis USA has treated me, along with my local dealership. All I could see were the shortcomings of my car, all the things I wanted it to be but it clearly wasn't. After spending the last 1.5 years of using most of my free time on my car, instead of with the short time I'm able to see my wife each week, and ending up with this icon of frustration to show for it - I realized that, for me, this isn't worth it.

Maybe the farther away dealership could properly repair my car. Maybe even Genesis would honor it as a warranty service. Maybe everything would be fine. But, considering my experience up to that point I decided it wasn't worth it. It wasn't worth the anxiety, stress, and strain on me or my family, no matter what the outcome. I decided that it would be better to sell the car as soon as possible.

So that's what I did. I sold my car to a local dealership. I figured a dealership would have the resources and warranty to repair the leak in the bellhousing. Whomever buys the car next should have the comfort and reassurance that their dealership can fix what's wrong if it ends up causing any problems without having to pay for it. If I were to sell it privately, there would be no guarantee of that; but, by selling it to a dealer (non-genesis), there would be a surety of some form of warranty for the next buyer.

As for me, I lost a lot of money; but, I gained a lot of relief.

I want to say that I have truly appreciated everyone on this forum. I like the people here, and I feel that I consider myself to have very similar interests and values as most members here. I'll probably stick around for a little while, both to see what is going on in the Genesis world, and also to sell all of my aftermarket parts.

Take a look in the classifieds section for my parts for sale. As of this writing, there are a few things that people have already called dibs on. I'll post everything that isn't already called for.

Thanks everyone, and good luck.
Been a while since I've been here. Even if you don't see this Todd just wanted to say really appreciate your post when there were dozens on of discussing the G70. You were the first to really go all out on mods and helped many of us.

Sad to see Genesis treat you this way. 😔

Well, I was one of their responders for reliability, and I described my sun roof/headliner ordeal, my ongoing brake ordeal, my windshield washer motor that failed, my AC fan noise issue, and other various other fit and finish issues, so I'd say that's about right. I mean, I like the car but I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.

That's a lot of issues with one car. I wonder how many people on the forum have had even 1 or 2 issues? ( I had one early in my ownership and it was solved quickly)

Luckily I have not encountered any issues. Only asked the dealership to take a look at a rattling noise. I can visibly see the passenger seat shaking but for some reason they could not recreate the issue. Only happens on some roads so I kinda of accepted that

Mine is an early build, so that could have something to do with it. The brake issues seem pretty well-represented on the forum.

^ maybe, but Slip has a Dynamic which means he should have the Euro pads. Assuming so, that explains why he has no brake issues.

My Dynamic is the Canadian version. Does that still mean I have the Euro pads? If so, cool!

^ the Canadian Dynamic was just a trim level...so you do not.

In the US...the Dynamic was 1 of 2 special launch editions...which had the Euro pads. The other one was the Design edition (regular pads).

Canada did not have either of the launch editions.

Oh...and I’ve had exactly zero issues over 2.5 years and 9k miles.

^ sorry, didn't notice you were a canuck. in CAD, the only trim that got the Euro pads is the 6MT Sport which is what i have. i didn't even know CAD got a Dynamic trim! thought Sport AWD 3.3T was the top trim here.

i expect driving habits and commute have a lot to do with whether or not someone has the brake shudder issue with the OE ceramics. ceramics are long lasting and quiet but are not abrasive enough to heat up with light use. short commutes, flat terrain, light braking, etc will not heat up the ceramics enough to scrub off any pad deposits from the rotors. longer commutes and hilly terrain with heavy braking will heat up the brakes and clean up deposits nicely. of course, a more taxing commute will wear brake components quicker but at least the brakes will be smoother during their service life.

those with the Euro pads don't have this issue since semi-metallic are much more abrasive and heat up the friction surfaces quickly. my brakes are already warm after a few brake applications. the downside = dust! you'll notice a lot of neglected MB/BMW with blackened wheels from the brake dust. thankfully the dark 5-spoke Sport rims conceal the dust very well. i know it's there but the casual observer doesn't.

^ Sport is the highest trim in Canada. The Dynamic was one of the 3.3TT trims...that was slotted between Prestige and Sport...from what I remember.

And yeah...I forgot that the 6MT Sport had the Euro pads :)
