  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GPS Update

I wonder if we can send a letter that is SIGNED by ALL OF us that are concerned or having issues. This is maybe the next STEP to ratchet up the heat.

^ I'll sign it. I don't have any idea if the number of complaints is large enough to force Hyundai to help us. We do know that the infotainment system in our cars has been plagued by sporadic absence of any volume, really bad I pod integration, absence of streaming Bluetooth and an outdated, expensive and hard to acquire GPS update, we also know (again without benefit of real numbers) that a significant number of Genesis owners were so disenchanted with the audio systems that Consumer Reports gives the audio portion of our vehicle the worst possible mark. If you look closely at the systems in the 2013 tech, sedan you'll note that the head unit is different...was the change in head units due to reliability? This maybe just a "numbers" game for Hyundai in that they know the systems are problematic but it's cheaper to just ignore us or dispense fixes one at a time while they introduce a better product for future buyers. Meanwhile those customers responsible for the early success of Hyundai are given a cold shoulder.

Can the 2013 head unit be put I to a 2012 ?

Day 7 of the GPS update venture. I took my Genesis in last Thursday and it's still in the shop..stay tuned!

Day 8. Refurbished radio arrives. They will apply the update again after installing the refurb :0!!!....it's about 6:30 and not a peep from the service center. Anyone want to bet that the refurb crashed with the update? Day 9 approaching without resolution. If the refurb crashes should I request that the next refurb not be updated?

Consumer Reports made me aware of the Genesis (93 rating. A score higher than either the Avalon or the Lexus e300). Next buy I'll concentrate on the winner of the reliability/ owner satisfaction rating.

Yes. But may be very expensive. wiring is not same and dash trim and mounting would have to be changed and also dash lighting.

and the DIS operational buttons are different (upper right and left buttons to be exact) with the folder structure navigation/functionality (not sure if they're imperative for operation though).

Day 9. per the service writer "see the guy who is doing the upgrade keeps missing the cues! It's a four hour long procedure and data disks have to be loaded by cue. To catch the cues you have to sit and watch" yada yada ...no car today! Earliest available (assuming all goes right..kind of big assumption at this point) is Monday....that's right - a four GPS upgrade might be available a minimum 11 days later.

What to do, what to do? Thousands of dollars wasted if I get rid of the car. A better vehicle with a better service departments might be worth it. The least I should do is make my extreme displeasure known to the service manager/dealership/Hyundai et al.

The Who's "Won't get fooled again" ringing through my head.

Is the dealer at least paying for a rental car for you ?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I get a loaner any time I leave a car. I rarely wait on my car. My Mazda dealer 15 years ago did this for customers and and today so does my Hyundai dealer and Mercedes dealer. You got a dealer problem.

Well yes! Thanks for the education. To wit: always call ahead to make sure the shop has the required parts ( tough when you're not sure what's wrong) and anytime you leave a car at the dealer request a loaner...those of you contemplating a GPS upgrade please do yourself a favor and make sure they have the proper software (not sure what you do when the tell you that they are equipped and are mistaken) and ask for a loaner while they are applying the four hour upgrade...please relay your experience!

My October, 2012, update took two days because they had to reload some of the discs twice. The dealer drove a new hybrid Sonata over 60 miles to swap out for my car. They would have delivered it back to me except I voluntarily took the loaner back since they were paying for the update. BTW, that hybrid got about 40 MPG and ran like a top.

Wow Retry yours is a real example of good service! Why did the dealer pay for the update?

I purchased my 2012 back in February and the update was included as part of the deal. The new update still doesn't have the new roads or restaurants in my area so I really didn't gain what I expected from it. The price I believe was $265 and if I had paid for it I certainly would have been sorely disappointed. Next time I think I need an update, I'll just update my Garmin. Good luck with yours.

Yes well I'm afraid of what's coming back! How many sleeping dogs (aka electrical gremlins) did I arouse? I'm sickened by the thought of wasting money SO I'll probably live with the car but I'll give Hyundai and anyone asking an ultra honest appraisal of their vehicle and my experience with Hyundai service. Actually my initial service writter tried to warn me...everything about his attitude, when I asked about the upgrade, was negative: the upgrade tied up a technician for hours, the upgrade often crashed the system and chances are he didn't have the required software. It turns out that every misgiving the initial service writer listed happened with my vehicle.

If you had one of their loaner cars out, especially if it was another Genny...for this time period you've been w/o a car.. I wonder if their bungling this relatively easy procedure (although a long one) would have been cut down or mitigated by the fact of you tying up an asset of theirs.

Even with your 4runner alternate vehicle...anything overnight or requiring a full day, I'd be insisting on holding on to a loaner, even if to just park it in front of your house or in the driveway.

I just get the feeling the have no one tech-savvy ...maybe they have mechanical aptitude and all, but clearly someone with an ounce of tech/sw/computer aptitude has been assigned to this task/job. Heck...who cares if it's four discs? and an attended install (I highly doubt as well)? Apparently no one who had to live through the days of six to seven 3.5" disc installs for Windows 3.11, Peachtree, Lotus or whatever software from back in the day has touched this Navi update (yeah I'm showing a little age). I feel for you Vince2, this is getting to the point of idiocy and your consumer complaints are more than warranted.

Thanks for the sympathy krazyfiend. In the future when I require repairs or service I'll ask if the part required for the repair/service is in the shop and second, if they need to keep my vehicle for more than a day, I'll ask for a loaner (both of these good suggestions are from poster homeofstone). I had no idea that this "four hour tour" would turn into nearly a fortnight! I reread a thread on "head unit" issues and I'm holding my breath that when my car is returned it's not plagued with a half dozen other issues documented on this forum.

P.S. Hyundai promised to detail the car and give me a break on the price of the upgrade( I'm still laughing about that one :) :) ). I'll ask that they not detail the car but spend the time checking all of the functions of the head unit...does my satellite subscription work, does the voice activation work, is the Nav working without freezing, did they remove my DVD/CDs from the old head unit. It may turn out that an out of date GPS might have been the least of my problems. We'll see.

I had similar problems with my Nav, including a new head unit. The second one did not work correctly either, i.e. freeze up when I used a voice command. I was just about to take it back when it started working correctly.

Happier now.

That said, I have had no problems with the car other than the NAV unit. Engine runs great, handles better than any car I've owned.

Update: the car is ready to be picked up...a full 11 days later. My service writer had the technician call me and explain all of the problems ( viz. no software, crashed system, exchange of head unit, re application of update (technician says it's more like 6 hours to apply, he started the process at 9:00 am and he fed in the last disk at approximately 3:00 pm) and finally a test of the update). The car was then detailed. It's too late in the day to pick it up so I'll get it tomorrow. I'll let the forum know how well the new ( umm refurbished ) head unit with updated GPS works.
