GPS Update

I purchased my 2012 back in February and the update was included as part of the deal. The new update still doesn't have the new roads or restaurants in my area so I really didn't gain what I expected from it. The price I believe was $265 and if I had paid for it I certainly would have been sorely disappointed. Next time I think I need an update, I'll just update my Garmin. Good luck with yours.

I have had a similar positive experience in terms of service. Purchased my 2012 in Feb 2013 and the Nav update was part of the deal. Seamless install, they gave me a loaner Genesis and in about 5 hours they did they Nav update, installed all the Genesis emblems and side chrome which I wanted. I didn't pay for the update..but the price was around $250 I think. I think dealer service departments seem critical to handling the Nav issues.:)
 
Funny thing is that my regular Hyundai service center (it's clean, new, modern) was so manifestly "anti" update that I chose another Hyundai location. My regular shop had had so many negative outcomes when upgrading that the would rather not do it. Csalter it's good to hear about your Hyundai dealership.
 
Got my car and so far so go. Initial check out reveals everything working and some slight graphic changes. Where I live has many new roads and neighborhoods, including my own, that were not on the map. They are on the map now. I'll report my experience with use of the upgrade.
 
All is working fine with the GPS upgrade. A small bonus is that the surround sound setting now remains checked. The sound of the audio sounds richer, more detailed and that's probably due to missing the excellent sound as opposed to any improvement from the switch in head unit. My replaced head unit has "ride height" and "sport" setting on the menu...:)
 
...And I'm STILL WAITING for my $$$ coupon from the Genesis Customer support Center - I will call them AGAIN and AGAIN until I get what they promised.

HMA stopped sending out Hyundai Genuine Service Coupons at the beginning of the year. They did not renew the contract with the vendor whom distributes the coupons. I believe they are now distributing goodwill by a different means.

Yea, that's exactly what I'm suspecting....I know the manager at the Customer Care Center said they'd had a problem with the coupon vendor....so go figure.

First time poster! 2012 Genny w/ tech. We are planning a major road trip this summer and wanted most current maps available. Read these series of posts and got uncomfortable. Jumping to the end of story, it is complete, everything appears to be working correctly, all existing data remained intact.
Research. The dealer that we bought the car from is not an Equus dealer and had never done a DIS upgrade. Told the service manager that based on posts on this site, was not comfortable being their first. Sought out an Equus dealer with experience and was quoted $350, includes price of authorization code from MNSoft and dealer labor. Said upgrade was 03.00.00 2012.04.14.01. Told him that I looking for V5. I called MNSOFT and was told that all software revisions to date start with 03.00... Original dealer service manager called back and told me that he had reviewed the update procedure and offered to review it with me. We reviewed the procedure and agreed that it was straightforward. He said that he would do the install personally with no labor charge so that he could determine what labor charge should be. I agreed.
Install. I offered to sit and babysit the car during the install. He agreed. The upgrade is a package of 6 disks, 3 operating system & 3 map data. Only 1 operating system disc is used depending on car configuration. 1 of the 3 is Equus only. Of the 2 remaining Genny discs, which one is used is based on the retrieved HW Device ID. You select from yellow or orange but the orange is very "weak", very little red, almost yellow. They are also identified as "Type 1 " or "Type 2". I mention this because the disks have a red caution label suggesting system damage if the wrong disk is used. This was the only element of the procedure that might explain some of the problems reported here. Operating system install took 1 hour. 3 map data discs took 3:15. 4:15 plus :15 for system checks at end. There was no downtime. It could not be done more quickly.
Results. Everything works, all data is intact, nothing looks different. some graphics changes have been reported but I have not seen them. I have no idea what the operating system revisions did.
Cost. I paid $200. Service manager is trying to decide how many labor hours need to be priced in. Future price will be based on that decision.
Editorial comment. Genny replaced Infiniti M45 with DVD based nav system. Upgrade for that car was buy discs, about $200, select quadrant of country that you are in, load disc. 10 minutes max. Disadvantage, keep discs in car so that you can load new quadrant when travelling.
The DIS hard drive system should have an advantage over the DVD system in that significant changes can be made with the software, much like upgrades to computer operating systems. It does not look like Hyundai is taking advantage of this yet.
 
mbgiblin I'm happy to hear of your good experience updating. Maybe some of the problems reported on the forums about the GPS upgrade are with the Hyundai technicians and their attention to detail. The Hyundai dealership I used for the upgrade is very busy and if the GPS upgrade requires constant, close attention over several hours I can see why cues might be missed. My upgrade took approximately 11 days! I can say, happily, that with the upgrade installed the system sounds better to me, I've noticed streets and business that were not on the previous map are now listed and the "un checking surround sound" issue has been cured. It's too early to tell if the "no audio" issue was fixed ...there have been zero problems since the upgrade. When our Genesis (Genesi?) are "dialed" in and running as designed they are excellent vehicles indeed.

I think the caution label tells it all. Techs get the disk and begin the install using disk 1, 2, 3 etc. Reading and studying the install instructions must come first. People have to start with the instructions. This also indicates the lack of proper training and supervision of the service department techs.
 
fwiw, my experience mirrors mbg's. svc mgr (a closet computer geek) did the work. before he started, he showed me (professional/overt computer geek) the kit & instructions and talked thru his approach (including battery charger for the duration).

suspect a lot of these bad experience scenarios involve procedural errors.

glad your (11 day!!!) upgrade ended up working out V2.

I called them again this afternoon, with my case number. Again I was told that they've had a problem with the coupon vendor, but Hyundai will be issuing the coupons. By the time this is over, I should have enough $75 coupons to cover the damn upgrade. I explained in very calm terms there are a LOT of disgruntled people out here on the boards and they should tell Hyundai that every day delay may cost them customers.

Update: Butler Hyundai Indianapolis did a great job with the firmware and NAV update. No questions asked, they updated to the latest for my 2012 DIS. No charge. The database is behind on the latest street conversions to roundabouts from the Moronic traffic light based intersections. Not complaining. NO previous data lost on the radio, directories and NAV. They did a great job.

I am pleased with their service. Had the 7500 service done. They also chuckled a bit in the oil filter controversy relating to which filter design was best. They said the aftermarket design with the larger hole and lip which goes over the pipe inside the filter case worked great. They had to use the Hyundai filters which use a smaller opening and does not fit over the pipe. I am using M1 extended or Pennzoil Ultimate 5-20.

They also gave me a Equus as a loaner. I got back from town after they closed and never complained I brought the car back the next day. I love the Equus.. As biz gets better. Plan on putting a Premium version in the corporate "fleet" and keep the Genny.

Another side note. They did a great job (so far so good) fixing the seat stretching. Pic attached. More detail in the seat stretching posts.

If anyone is having issues with their dealer, and you are in driving distance, please give Butler a try. The service manager (Joe) is great. Wow DRS I wish we all had Hyundai dealerships like yours. My service department pumps me to give them good ratings...they didn't ask for good ratings after keeping my car for 11 days to update the GPS :) . I use a different shop now.

Sorry to hear that. Some day it might change... But so far, so good. They also seem to treat the Hyundai customers well, not just the Genny or Equus clients.
 
West Broad Hyundai in Richmond contacted Map n Soft yesterday. The dealer's price to update the navigation package on a 2011 Genesis with tech package is $429. It is "only a map update" (finally after 2.5 years of owning the car). The package costs $189 and it takes 2.5 to 3 hours to install. Sounds exorbitant. Anyone have a better price to update?
 
Huntsville Alabama wants $180 to update my maps. At least I think they were quoting me only for maps. I agree with all the complaints here about cost and functionality of listing 100 "Main Street"s since you can't enter a city first, etc.

Has anyone had a route in progress and enter the voice command to "reroute-shortest time" (I don't remember the exact words and my car is in the shop now so I can't check it.) and have the new route be a LONGER time?

I've never asked for a quote from my dealer down here in Birmingham, but I suspect it would be in the same range. I wouldn't think of spending the money for a map update unless it also came with significant improvements to other software, especially iPod integration. However, that's unlikely to ever happen.

I've never tried to change to a route with shorter duration while guidance was in progress. But since the system only takes average speed on various roads into consideration and doesn't know about traffic conditions, I wonder how helpful it'd be. I did have XM traffic for awhile when I bought my car, but IIRC that data wasn't used by the nav for route planning, and it was inaccurate fairly often.
 
I guess I could've been more clear and stated that the system's estimate of the new route was longer than the estimate of the current route. If I select to "reroute-shortest time", it sure shouldn't reroute me to something it estimates would take a longer time.
So in example form, I will have a destination input and the system will tell me that I am 60 minutes from the destination. I'll then say to "reroute-shortest time", the system will choose to reroute me and I'll then be 65 minutes from my destination.
Maybe what is happening is that the "reroute" command says to get me off whatever route the system has now chosen and put me on some other route and the route to chose should be the shortest time of new possible routes. when I get my car back, I'll do back-to-back "reroute-shortest time" commands. If the first one takes me off the current (and shortest) route, then the second command should take me back to it. I'm pretty sure I have seen the same thing happen with "reroute-shortest distance" increase the estimated distance to the destination.
In the end, it is a shame to have a "nice" car with "nice" information system but have to have a stand-alone GPS.
 
I recently bought a new 2012 with tech/premium package and was looking forward to using the 8" screen for nav.

My first experience was on local streets where my wife had what streets to turn on and it was great for "that street is the third intersection...

My second experience was programming a location to go to - not great - where do I enter the city... Then to return home - while I had set home there didn't appear to be a "home" select so I entered my address.

I fly and rent alot, so my 5" Garmin with lifetime map updates travels with me anyway. I do want to check what version I have of Nav software - but given my surround sound checkbox stays checked I suspect I have a pretty recent OS. The link to the photos of the touchscreen (non-DIS) GPS updated software look pretty damn good - lane assist, weather, speed limit... Would be nice if the expensive systems had that.

Love the car, would only be better with decent GPS. If I had option of buying car without GPS (even not knowing how bad it was) I would have gone that route.
