  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GV70 2.5 rear end noise

That's what it sounds like, yes. My dealership has repeatedly requested Genesis Canada to issue a recall, which they are considering. I'm just not sure how many are affected by the rear diff issue (mine is), if they know which ones are affected and if they have a real fix for it. They might just be throwing parts at it and hope the failure rate is low enough that replacing it with the same part might be successful. That worries me a bit because there's a good chance it will happen again - like when the warranty expires.

I would get the vehicle in sooner than later so you can get in the queue to order a replacement part before a recall gets issued - then it will be very hard to get replacement parts, I would think. The ETA for mine is about a month to get the part.

Good to know thanks. Parents visiting me out in Calgary and are about to drive back to Winnipeg so hopefully the Diff doesn’t grenade itself on the way back.

Picked mine up this morning after the differential change and it did fine driving back to the office. I’ll see how it does on the commute home.
Hope this one lasts. 🤞

Hi folks, joining the club today at 3600km and less than 4 months since delivery. I've been reading these posts so I'm aware of the potential problem. Today noticed very similar observations that everyone here is reporting. At about 80km/hr when I let it coast, I hear a low pitch whine. Goes away when I apply throttle. I wondered if I was over-sensitive having read these posts. Without me saying anything, my wife also noticed it from passenger side. She thought it was more from the rear center but since I was driving, I couldn't really tell which direction the sound emanated from.

So I came back to this thread and read from the beginning. It seems some have waited a long time for parts and others had to fight with Genesis for proper diagnosis. Can some of you provide feedback on whether the fix worked after replacing the differential? Is the car mostly driveable while you wait for parts?

I will call Genesis next week to report and hopefully they will provide good service without significant delay. The car otherwise seems fine (no warning lights). Will update as this develops. Thanks!

Mine drove fine, just annoying. I drove it from Tennessee to Florida and back with no issues. The noise never seemed to worsen.

Thanks for reply. Is yours fixed? Has it been OK after they've replaced the part?

Just picked it up this morning and it’s fixed. The question is, for how long…

Mine is drivable, noise doesn’t seem to get worse, so far. Part should be here sometime this month, dealer sets. I for sure triple remind service to check oil level in replacement diff, even if they claim it comes from factory all ready.

Been avoiding this thread like the plague - but after late night drive to see Bring Me The Horizon yesterday...thought I should dig through this. Especially if the sound is that noticeable after a rather loud heavy metal concert.

Digressing, while I don't think my wife notices this at all (primary driver), I do every time I drive it ('23 2.5T Sport Prestige), and I have not brought this to her attention yet. I can fully attest to it being on light throttle that goes away under harder acceleration or letting off completely. One thing to add, I also seem to notice (though a slightly different pitch) when the car goes into coasting mode under ECO, which changes that pitch when it engages.

I'd probably be more interested to see if there have been any actual failures with this...over just the sound annoyance. I would hate to see is an issue getting worse when it's messed with. I'd also like to see others stating the issues have been resolved over a longer time than just the first drive home from the dealer. I may have missed this in my review of the thread - Does anybody know if Genesis officially released a TSB for this yet? If so, anybody know the TSB number to reference?

At this point, I will probably make mention at the next service interval unless the sound gets worse over time or at least hope to hear more success stories.

If it makes noise immediately, I can only assume it will continue to get worse and build up more resistance until it starts affecting the transmission and other components. I can't see it NOT getting worse. I really wonder if there aren't more complaints just because it is a fairly quiet noise that you may only notice if you're listening for it. If they are considering a recall, I would want to get parts ordered before that. But then, as you suggest, will the new parts be any better? Are they delaying a recall because they don't have a permanent solution to the issue? Since I only needed 1,100 KM to find the problem, once I get the replacement (around the end of the month), I'll know within 10 days whether it's making the noise again or not. I put about 100 KM on every day.

our first one was annoying to hear, sounds drive me nuts like this one. Our second diff, lasted 5 miles and was so loud it was scary, the vehicle was not drivable and sat at the dealers for nearly 5-6 weeks waiting for the new diff, imagine a washing machine on spin cycle, it was terrible. Our 3rd diff is currently quiet, but time will determine that for sure.

Good luck! We're all curious to see if the problem comes back!

Update: The new differential is as bad, in fact worse, than the original one. Dropping it off at the dealer this morning.
I will say I’m very pleased with the service department so far. They’ve been professional, courteous, willing to drive an hour one way to my home to swap out cars (I did not take them up on that as my office is 20 minutes away and easy to drop off myself), and my car is always detailed when I pick it up.

Damn… that’s not good. Did you ask them to check and verify oil level in it before install?
Does it make same sort of sound?

Also curious if it made noise immediately or if it took some time to start getting noisy. If there are a bunch of multiple replacements happening, then my guess that they're just throwing parts at the problem because they don't have a real fix could be true, which is not good.

I did not ask them that but I did see on the invoice where the tech said “installed required fluid”. Interestingly enough, the part number for the fluid on the invoice has a note that says obsolete. 🤔
It makes the same basic sort of sound but also a new sound during deceleration that wasn’t there before.

I heard a slight noise when I drove it home after picking it up. It got worse after a couple days.

So basically looks like fix is hit and miss…. Which is not a fix at all… They likely don’t have it sorted out and just throw parts at it hopping some stick…

ours was the same situation, when asked, they said the new diffs come with fluid. I knew this wasnt true, our second one burned up in 5 miles and I am positive it was dry inside. I kept mentioning to be sure to check the fluid on our 3rd one, and the service guy said stuff like "Ill triple check this one" which leads me to believe they knew the second one burned up because they never checked or added the fluid. I had no way of proving this but enough was said that is what I believe happened.
